It's been a roller coaster for me. I was, and still am, mad at Pettine for reacting like this to what seems like a relatively minor thing. But then, I know there might be more to it. And quick: Name the last time you saw an Instagram photo of, say Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning or even a whole lot of lesser, younger quarterbacks acting like idiots at a club? Giving the keys to Johnny didn't do anything to strengthen his dedication. It's not going to work. I guess we know it. A shame, because I think he could be a special type of player. On to Paxton Lynch, I suppose. Best case scenario, we'll be competitive in 2018.
You wouldn't see those guys in a club - it isn't their persona. We drafted the guy and knew what we were getting - if we didn't know, then the FO is even more inept than I thought. JM is going to go out, that will likely never change. I personally could care less as long as he can play football. Will it be his demise? Possibly, but possibly not - we just don't know.
I do not feel that it is fair for the team to put restrictions on him but not everyone else. I'd like to have all other members of the squad followed 24/7 for weeks on end to see what they are up to. With Johnny comes the press and paparazzi - again, if our FO didn't realize that they are complete idiots.
I agree with Rish that they believe they are doing this for his own good, I just don't necessarily agree with it. We need to see if he can play football at this point, I don't give a damn if he drinks 24/7 as long as he can play football. That may sound harsh, but what a player does in his personal life so long as it is legal (though if they smoke pot I don't care) and does not affect performance on the field I fine with it.
See temperatures sky rocketed and agendas came straight to the fore.
My 2 cents - I support the decision because of the simple fact that JM has shown a pattern of behavior that Football is not that important to him that he is willing to make personal sacrifice in order to prepare and be the best he can be. I don't know how destructive his self destructive tendencies are and whether this behaviour is a reflection of that - I don't know if this is a conscious decision by a young man who has decided living life to the full is more important that football - or anything in between that may have motivated him.... me or anyone else guessing at the reasons is pure speculation.
What I do know is that anyone - even the most gifted and physically prototypical QB to play the game - can't achieve their potential and be the best they can be until they put football first.
For all those arguing that JM doesn't deserve this - I tend to believe that it's any decision by the FO that you will disagree with. Letting a guy with recent history of rehab go scot free for such a cavalier and entitled attitude in the face of overwhelming public scrutiny simple ENABLES him to carry on. ENABLING and sending a message to team and all the players that it's cool to put football second place in your life is wrong on so many levels IMO.
I'd started to have some hope for JM - but after this episode I think the hope tank is empty again. It's not about his ability - it's about attitude and application of his craft ... that is simply not there.
I tend to agree, he wasn't fired, he was disciplined because of recent past actions. Come on, just out of rehab and he's partying with alcohol and who knows what. If and I emphasize IF this discipline helps immediately then ok, if not, cut the loses and keep our current QB's and draft a QB (not a media star)
With Johnny comes the press and paparazzi - again, if our FO didn't realize that they are complete idiots.
I think they knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they drafted. Ticket sales went up, merchandise sales went up and Berea was the new hot spot for the NFL and ESPN. Problem is, Manziel decided to continue to live like a rock star instead an NFL professional who chose to go out on occasion. Here's where hedging their bet has bitten this FO and coaching staff in the arse. Actions speak louder than words and he has continued to say the right things and do the wrong things.....
I'm done with Pettine. Terrible move as far as I'm concerned.
I'm with you 110%. Seems most others are wavering that it was the right thing to do. I know I'm not going to budge unless something horrible comes out that he did (DUI, raped someone, etc). I don't care that the guy drinks, and I think it is wrong of the FO to put restrictions on him that they don't put on all of the players. Screw that.

I agree. Not their place to do so. Pettiness Pettine!
I don't see how benching him is the best thing for the team going forward. They need to play him and see what he has, that is the best thing for the team going forward.
This team is being coached like a high school team.

Pettine called the move to demote Manziel “a coaching decision” he said general manager Ray Farmer and owner Jimmy Haslam had spoken to Manziel before the bye week about his off-field behavior
pettiness Ray Farmer and owner Jimmy Haslam too right?
being a browns fan is like taking your dog to vet every week to be put down...
They also don't have to live by the same rules. Look, I don't like that he lied. I get it. I don't like that he parties either, but it is what you get with him. To say he can't do something on his personal time is ludicrous. The rest of the team should have to abide by the same rules and have photographers follow them around 24/7.
We drafted him to play football, as long as his off field antics don't affect that who gives a damn what he does on his personal time?!? I just don't get why anyone cares.
What if Manziel knew he would get benched if he didn't follow the standards set in front of him?
If they set different standards for him then it just shows how much more of a joke this FO is. He has never had any issues as far as being punished by the league and he is a choir boy compared to some of the other thugs in the NFL.
I cringe to think about letting another FO go because every time we do we all say it can't get any worse and somehow, some way, it does. This is by far my least favorite group of ineptitude we've had, and we have had no shortage of that. If it gets worse than this group of unqualified bozos I'll be amazed.

You are looking at this as a surface level issue, it is much deeper than that.

wwhat do you think they would see? anyone notice that no one on the team are ever around him when he is doing these thngs? wonder why? i can only think of one player who went anywhere with him outside of ohio. pothead gordon went to the pot capital of the usa with him. now that showed leadership lmao......

Manziel violated some type of agreement and ultimately trust.
But Ian Rappoport has zero credibility. I find it hard to believe they "wanted him to hang around the facility" when he said in his presser before the bye that he was going back to Texas.
Rappoport is awful on a level not normally seen from a national reporter.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
It's amazing the Browns just didn't outright release Manziel.
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports (per Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report), Manziel lied to the Browns about the video, telling them it was old footage, and he reportedly also told his friends who shot the footage to lie as well.
With Johnny comes the press and paparazzi - again, if our FO didn't realize that they are complete idiots.

Exactly. Johnny did what he was brought in to do. Unfortunately, the cost was an absolute circus that Berea turned into. WAY too many distractions created. Farmer, Pettine and Manziel need to be shipped out. I'm even starting to think that the Browns need to relocate from Berea. Just start over. Anything to break the cycle of sucking that is the Cleveland Browns.
After 55 years, I'm walking away from this dumpster fire. Good luck to everyone who continues to hang on. You'll need it.
i remember the last time we had a bunch of high character guys on this team. the mangini years
we went 4-12 back to back.

if thats your definition of an upswing, then i dunno what to tell you.

According to the Fox Sports report, Manziel told the Browns that an online video showing him singing in a club and holding what appeared to be champagne bottle was old. He also encouraged his friends to lie about when the video was recorded, according to the report
I must have missed this prior..but I think I will change my mind if it is true and side with Pet benching him..ok - not 3rd string but don't let him suit up...
So if the part is true that he not only lied to Pet and then also tried to get his friends to lie about the timeline...that is pretty messed up..
UGH...what a mess.

This is a new report and Jay Glazer is usually pretty money.
We will find out more. Everyone is getting fired so they have no incentive to keep things in house. If anything, making things public makes their jobs easier. No one will question the decision if the details are true (and ugly).
well....at least we didn't trade for sam bradford.

Reports say Johnny Manziel lied to Browns about the bye week video
By Frank Schwab 53 minutes ago
Shutdown Corner
Once again, the cover up is worse than the crime.
The Cleveland Browns benched Johnny Manziel after a video of him partying over the bye week surfaced, a move most people understood but was confusing to some. How could the Browns bench him for partying over the bye week, something many of their other players certainly did too?
Mike Pettine explained that in part on Wednesday (basically, they expect more out of the quarterback) but apparently left out a pretty big detail: Manziel lied to the team about the video, and apparently wanted others to lie about it too.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said that when the Browns asked Manziel about the video, "he was he was not honest about where and when it came from." On Fox, Jay Glazer said Manziel lied about how old the video was and asked friends to lie about it too.
On the heels of those reports, it makes perfect sense why the Browns took the action they did. Now it's even a little more interesting that the Browns were so adamant that Manziel could get another chance. When it seemed his biggest crime was not laying low, as Rapoport said the Browns asked him to do, it was logical that they could go back to him at some point. But if the reports are true that Manziel lied, it shows how invested the Browns are that Manziel could lie to them and yet Pettine still is publicly saying the benching was not a dead end.
Clearly, however, this was the most regrettable bye week trip ever.
pffft....i hate farmer and pet, but i hate manziel now as well.
we should've just cut him now, go into the season with the best pick, re sign josh mccown,
and courtesy of 15, back off for goff.
