Sean Payton says Rob Ryan 'absolutely' still his DC

Will the Saints retain Rob Ryan despite reports otherwise, or was New Orleans head coach Sean Payton simply playing a game of semantics during his press conference on Monday afternoon?

Less than 24 hours after Payton's team was bullied by Washington in a 47-14 beatdown, the coach said he had yet to meet with Saints executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis, with whom he'd need to consult with before making such a decision. (see below)

Every game, all season

"In regards to any potential change, that's something we haven't even met on," Payton said. "That's not something that would be done without a lot of thought. Anything like that would be done with a lot of consideration."

When asked if Ryan was still his defensive coordinator, Payton said "absolutely," but consistently said next topic when asked any follow-up questions.

If Payton does end up getting rid of Ryan, it would be hard to stomach from an outside perspective if he makes any kind of announcement on Monday. After pleading for the time and patience to have; a lot of thought, surely this is not something Payton could turn around and do in the next 24 hours, could he? At the moment, the Saints are on pace to set a record for passing touchdowns surrendered. The defense is led by Rob Ryan, but the groceries are certainly selected with a large influence by Payton. It also seems very clear Ryan is not running the same defense he was two years ago schematically, when the Saints finished No. 4 in the NFL.

Still, a good defensive coordinator needs to be flexible and not just dedicated and passionate, and maybe that will be Ryan's ultimate pitfall. For the moment, we have no crystal-clear answers. Payton needs time to have a few meetings first.

Saints executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis...

Mickey Loomis is the executive vice president and General Manager of the NFL's New Orleans Saints. He was named NFL executive of the year for 2006. Since June 2012, he is also head of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association.

Loomis grew up in Eugene, Oregon... He earned his degree in accounting from the University of Oregon and a masters degree in sports administration from Wichita State University. Before coming to the Saints, Loomis spent 15 years in the Seattle Seahawks organization.

Loomis joined the Saints in 2000 and became general manager in 2002. He was with the Saints when they were forced to relocate to San Antonio in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and helped rebuild the team afterward, culminating in its victory in Super Bowl XLIV.
Wiki

I added the Micky Loomis info as an example of one of the NFL team's executives in charge of football, and their GM, and the kind of education and experience that qualifies him for that position.

I'm more interested in Sean Payton getting fired. Brilliant offensive mind and would command respect immediately in our lockeroom by flashing his ring.

Payton isn't going to get fired, he has an opt out in his contract though. If he opts out, I predict he will be the coach of the Cowboys in 2016.

I miss Kenny Rogers, but he sucked at defense. Screens were always at 10+ yard play with him.

Ryan as DC, I am all for it!! It would put me in the corner to give Pet another year.

Rob as HC would not be boring lol but I dont think he will ever be a head coach at this level.

Bring him in. Watching the ensuing circus would be a lot more fun than the dismal crap we're seeing now.

Yea Rob Ryan has bounced around for a reason. And does anyone seriously think Pettin even consider bringing someone else in? O'neil is his puppet and he would never suffer someone elses opinion, especially another DC.

seriously if i was pettin id look at another defensive coordinator. at least he can say that he`s sticking with the offense and the defense isnt his mess.

save yourself pett! fire the second worse defensive coordinator in the nfl. of coarse they might ask him to fix it....oh boy.

id go back to romeo`s drop 8 and make em go with short passes. i mean this cover 0 is really a cover 0. and by 0 i mean.....

Rob Ryan on Saints' D: Ranked 33rd out of 32 teams

D: Ranked 33rd out of 32 teams

The New Orleans Saints fired coordinator Rob Ryan this week after watching one of the worst defenses in NFL make pedestrians look like superstars game after game this season.

Speaking on NFL Network's GameDay Morning, Ryan admitted a change had to be made in New Orleans.
Every game, all season

"Something had to be done," he said. "Right now the defense is ranked 33rd in the league and there's only 32 teams."

The Saints' defense currently ranks 32nd in the NFL in points per game allowed (31.5) and total yards per game given up (424.7), 30th in the NFL in pass yards per game (293.1) and 29th in rushing yards allowed (131.6).

Despite owning terrible defenses the last two seasons in New Orleans -- after leading the NFL's No. 4 ranked D in 2013 -- Ryan believes he'll be back on the sideline again.

"I had a lot to do with it," Ryan said. "...Everything in New Orleans is being blamed on me including Katrina and I think it's a little farfetched. So the bottom line is this. I'll hold my head high and walk out into the sunset, but believe me, I'm coming back with a vengeance."

Ryan has only had a Top 10 defense (YPG) in two of 12 seasons as a defensive coordinator (2013 in New Orleans and 2006 with the Raiders).

not sure why he couldnt find the right scheme or players in 2 years. i mean if i was the worst at defense id probebly switch to a cover 2 or drop 7 or 8. gotta try something different.

of coarse im saying that about our browns to. if we had a top 10 defense we might be .500

I'd still like to see him get a shot at a HC spot.. Think he'd be better there than at DC.

Yeah. naughtydevil Mums the word ok?

Yah you know the Raiders fired me because I went into prevent defense with a 7 point lead in the 3rd qtr one too many times. What a bunch of ungrateful folks there. I was just protecting the lead. Oh big deal? We lost those games. Get over it OK?

And yeah, so many Clev fans forgot I elevated the defenses here from 31'st my first season 2009 to 22nd in 2010.

Then the Browns defenses went on to break into the top 10 in the NFL just a year or so after I was fired. See what I built you here?

I then went on to Dallas and took them from the mediocre NFL sack leading defense to a 14th ranked defense. Then we dropped a smidge the following year to 19 but I was building another defense and then they go and fired me and blamed me for everything like I was the one missing tackles and playing out there. Another bunch of ingrates there.

Now I was building another defense in NLOA and just broke into the top 20 in the power rankings and they go and fire me. superconfused WTFudge

Ya know...Just because my defenses only ranked in the top 10 in the NFL just once I don't deserve this type of treatment. I'm NFL royalty damit!

Comon Cleveland you know I'm your guy. I'm better then Kosar. Hire me instead.

sure He cant be worse than what we have.
With haden heathy next year plus wright and are 7th round pick to start he could really put together some real blitz packages.
But I think everybody on the board is just really frustrated.

I'd rather give Pet one more year to have his system sink in before hiring a lower like Rob Ryan. Don't get me wrong he is a funny guy and all but he just isn't a winner.

I'd rather not keep Pet..his schemes suck and when you have players that have been it for basically 2yrs and tell the media they have no idea what the position next to them is doing and are confused..

Well lets just say I don;t think its completely on the player I think the coach's scheme suck...and good God I understand how we ring through coaches but I can't stand the results of this mans team.

btw...always assumed the Premise of this thread was Satire.

But the only good thing that would come of hiring Rob Ryan as HC....Mangini would probably be his DC and finally we would have one good one!

His team is 29th in total defense. We're 30th.

It's a baby step.
