What I think is BS about this ban is the smokers are the first group the government wants to tax when ever they want to fund something. I wonder what they would do if these bans and taxes actually get the majority of people to quit. There goes their cash cow.

Also on another subject from last Novembers voting. Gambling, please tell me how we can bet on Horses, go play bingo, bet on the lottery, go to churches that are having Casino nights for charity and also go to the flats coming up and play poker and black jack for charity, but gambling is evil and should be kept out of Ohio?

It already has in my book. Remember Xbox 360 had a year start but in the Wii's first 7 months it has out sold Xbox 360's first 7 months.

I totally agree and I do like the smoking ban as well. It's a health issue to breathe in cigarette smoke indoors.

I don't see why people like Wii so much. What are they trying to do, make video games healthy and for exercise. Just give me my chair and controller and leave me alone for an half hour - hour

I think that they should ban pee coats. If you aren't in the Navy you have no business wearing them anyway. Then we would see where Mr. " I don't want to smell smokey wahhhhh !! " likes that law.

Wow, how you try to say anything to me after that is hilarious. I don't think this conversation can get more childish.

I bet you wear all leather.

Actually it's called being inovative. And it's selling like hotcakes. Try to go buy a Wii, PS3 and and Xbox 360. I bet you can find a PS3 and an Xbox 360 fairly easily.

I'm a non-smoker, and personally I like all the non-smoking in Florida here, but I was also perfectly happy just being able to choose smoking or non-smoking when I went to a restaurant as long as they had some sort of barrier or something so the separation wasn't just an imaginary line.

As far as bars, I knew going in they would be smoky and I dealt with it, most of my friends are non-smokers as well, so we would either not stay long or find a corner with less smoke or a bar with a patio(an advantage to living in Florida)

But I did hate the people who would hold their cigarette so the smoke goes right toward me, or blow their smoke right at me while talking, a little courtesy would be nice.

If you say anything to them about it, they don't like it. It's like "well sorry, your smoke is in my face".

I agree Florida, a Barrier is ideal, but most just have "areas" that aren't divided by anything but space.

Just today I went to Joe Crab Shack for lunch, I asked for non smoking, yep, coudl still breath in the fresh cigarette air.

In Toledo when they had the smoking ban "Jakes Saloon" had a whole room, with a pool table for the smokers, which was fine, it still creeped out of the room but it was much more enjoyable. But if you wanted to use the "good" pool table, you had to suck it up, and breathe the smoke.

Wrong. I live in Centerville, there were places like Bill's Donuts and Doubledays that were smoking right up to the enforcement of the ban. Both have taken huge hits from the smoking ban.

It's stupid. Restaurants, okay...that's fine -- but bars? Seems like adults can't make their own decisions anymore. Bunch of nannies have to be handheld because they don't like smoke. Whatever. Go to a non-smoking bar then.

I've been to the bar ONCE since the ban took place. I probably won't go very often until football season. Too bad for the bar...they lose my $50 or $60 once a week or every other week. I'll stay home where I'm still pretty much free to do what I wish.

I agree, as my parents own a bar, a small town one at that, i see this first hand. Restaurants i agree with 100 percent, because there's kids and families there trying to enjoy a meal. But as far as private clubs like VFW, Moose etc, and bars, theres a certain atmosphere you expect to associate with that enviroment. Quite simply, if you don't like smoke or being around smokers, don't go to bars. Its terrible for the small business owners and is a very unconsititional law i don't care if it was voted in or not. Basically telling a grown adult they can't do something that perfectly legal and has been for centuries. I myself don't smoke, but i don't mind if others do, if i don't want to be around it, i avoid that situation

That's thing with restaurants. Everytime my family goes out to eat and they ask which area we prefer, we prefer the so called "non - smoking" which technically still isn't "non - smoking" because you still have the bad air..

Being able to breathe at the bars is a godsend, and for those who say "go to a non-smoking bar," there was no such thing in Athens.

Then take it up with the bar owners in Athens. Did you ever tell any bar owner you didn't appreciate the smoke? Doubt it.

And would they listen to me? HIGHLY doubt it. I'd probably be laughed out of the building.

Big whoop. YOu have to smoke outside. Bar's will adjust to it. There's bars down here that have outside areas open year round with heaters so you don't even have to freeze your butt off...

I heard the microbrewery went out due to the law. Can't think of the name of the place...at 48 and Alex Bell. I want to call it Salty Dog...but I don't think that's it. Wasn't Fox & Hound non smoking?

Why was I thinking Centerville was non-smoking? Did they pass something related to it a few years back?

But it's okay for the government to tell business owners how to run their businesses? I don't get it...not at all.

I'm not a smoker but I used to be one. I'll bet its a lot harded for a smoker to go to a bar and not smoke then it is for you to go and put up with it. I know the small town bar in my area have many customers that stop after work and sit and smoke and drink until bedtime. Not sure what they will do now that the Yuppies decided whats best for them. Plus it has to hurt business.

Yes I do. Why I was just saying the other day... screw the handicapped people and the stupid ADA requirements... if they can't get to a regular toilet, then they can just not go to that restaurant... or they can complain to the restaurant owners.. I'm sure that will make the restaurant owners spend thousands of dollars to put in ramps and wider bathroom stalls and lower counters etc to accommodate handicapped folks.... but NOOOOOO, the big nanny goverenment has to come in and FORCE businesses to accommodate the handicapped. What a crock.

Why would I be kidding? The question at hand, as I understand it, is really simple... Do we want the government telling people how to run their private businesses or not? Should a business be forced to spend money to accomodate the wishes of the handicapped even though the handicapped probably account for 2% of their business? Should a private club be forced to have black members? Should a private club be forced to have female members? Should a hotel be forced to put up braille signs all over the place to accommodate the 5 blind people a year that stay there? Should the government be allowed to mandate new private buildings use efficient lights and HVAC equipment because it protects the environment even though it's more expensive?

I don't mind the smoking ban, and I do smoke. Honestly, I wish everyone would quit smoking. It would be neat to see the state of Ohio face bankruptcy, or face having to raise taxes to make up for the lack of revenue. And you know smoking brings in a ton of revenue!!

We all know smoking is bad for your health. So is drinking too much, so i would love to see the state of Ohio put a ban on a person having more than 3 drinks per day. Same with greasy food - bad for you - I would love to see the state mandate that you can only have fries 1 time per week, red meat no more than 3 times per week.

I would also love to see the state make non seatbelt use a felony. That way we can incarcerate more people that aren't looking out for themselves (much as we did with dui) With dui, we now incarcerate people that drive while their bac is over an arbitrary limit, so why not non seatbelt users? They both cost the public in added medical and insurance expenses.

Also, motorcyclists should be mandated to wear not only helmets, but body armor as well - to reduce the risk of injury in case of an accident. If caught without, it should be a mandatory 30 days in jail.

Speeding. We all know speeding causes accidents, so therefore, anyone caught speeding should be fined $1000 (that will help the state make up for the lack of tobacco tax revenue). Get a second speeding ticket within 3 years, 6 months in jail........that'll teach them.

Also, if a business makes too much money, it should be a felony We can't have businesses making profit, as that isn't fair because they sell their product for more than it costs them to make it, and that's just un American, isn't it?

We all need to be careful what we wish for - ban smoking outright for all I care. Then let someone else take up the revenue loss.

If we can ban smoking, we can also ban other things under the same premise, i.e. "for the public good". Those steakhouses you like to go to? Maybe their next. (ala the trans fat ban in nyc)

Ban away, just be prepared for it to hit you someday. And the more that gets banned, the easier it is to ban the next thing...........so be prepared.

No, in general I still feel that an erosion of rights is a bad thing... but what constitutes a "right"? Is smoking in a bar a "right"? Is getting your wheelchair into Outback a "right"? Is being a female member at Augusta a "right" (if you can afford it)? Yes, I know, this discussion wasn't about individuals rights, at least that's not where it was, it was on business owners rights. And how much say the government should have in how a person runs their own private business....

So I go back to my original post before things got silly. Should the government be able to require a private business owner (whether it's an office building, restaurant, apartment complex, whatever) to make the establishment handicap accessible? Because if you answer yes, the government can dictate that to a business owner, then we are no longer talking about whether or not the government should be able to intrude, we are talking about to what degree. And once you start talking about degrees, everybody is going to have their own preferences on what the government should dictate and what they can't... Because right now, somewhere in Ohio, there is a black woman in a wheelchair who doesn't smoke who is pretty happy with the way things are because she can go and be comfortable pretty much anywhere she wants to go... all thanks to the government....

When Boston switched I read in the papers there they the bars actually increased their revenue because more people would come who normally wouldn't because of the smoke. I'm all for the ban in bars... I HATE smoke and can't stay at a bar for very long because I get jittery and if I stay too long will go into an asthma attack... so I'm all for the smoking ban inside the bar

If you don't want to answer the question about whether a business should be forced to accommodate the handicapped just say so...

Because you know what's funny? You and I share the same belief on the subject.. I don't like smoke in a restaurant when I'm eating, but in a bar it doesn't bother me... I think the ban is stupid, I think bar owners should be allowed to decide..... and I think MOST businesses should be required to take steps to accommodate the handicapped unless it presents an overwhelming burden...

I'm just trying to get some people to consider some of the other government "intrusions" into private business to see how they feel about it.. my guess is that most people will find some of that intrusion welcome and necessary and some over-the-line... that's my point. There is obviously a line to be drawn and if we know one thing about our government, once we give them the power to control an area of our lives, they never give it back....

So you can be done with me if you'd like, I'm just trying to get away from the whining about the "nanny state" to dissect the issue a little deeper, that's all....
