PortlandDawg Hall of Famer P Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,903 Portland, OR	If you call heavy lifting, breathing welding fumes, sore backs, cuts, burns, eye strain from welding, the general terror of a pending deadline, and losing every weekend for 3 months, fun then yes, it's a blast. No really it is a lot of fun. It a labor of love. I will say the weight involved in this project's steel is pretty daunting. The delivery weight was over 5600 pounds. We have no cranes or hoists. It's all man power. Oi. My back hurts already.

From foreground to back ground you see the palm of the hand the elbow then the shoulder in the distance. The first of four limbs though this is the most complete limb as the others will appear broken or more buried. We built the arm in its entirety then invented a clever tool that enabled us to draw a 'ground level horizontal line across its curved surfaces. To then plasma cut it to make it appear sunk into the ground. (Check back a page or two on this thread to see the scale model. It'll enable you see what I'm referring to.) ][/url]

archbolddawg Legend A Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 30,948	Looking good. Projects, hmmmm. Went down to Indian Lake last weekend. Have some friends from Columbus that have a place there. We take our motor home and stay in it, on their property. Woke up Monday morning, July 4th, to no water. The leak was "obvious" - obviously right where the water line went up to their well house (shed). Dug, thought we found the leak, fixed it, turned the well back on and.........still leaking. That's when some genius said "hey, the ground is really wet back by the well casing." And it was. That ground wasn't diggable though, as we found out after an hour of digging. Believe it or not, we were (they were) able to rent a backhoe. Got down, found the leak, and got it fixed. We (wife, daughter and I, along with sis in law, bro in law, and 2 nephews) got home. A bit later, wife went out to water plants. She came right back in saying "I think we have a problem." Sure enough, I walked out and we had puddles in the yard. Hadn't rained here, at all. Puddles were right above our well water line. Screw that. I called someone to come fix it. Those have been my last 2 projects.

You can write custom scripts/apps for the controller as well - I wrote one that randomly turns different lights on at different times when I am away for work. People can write scripts and then upload them for others to use. It is really cool. Other automation I have that isn't integrated into the controller: Arlo cameras - I just put these in a few weeks ago. Have 5 cameras, any motion is automatically recorded and saved to the cloud (free for 5 cameras for 7 days of storage). So far it is pretty cool. No wires on the cameras, we'll see how the battery life is. App is pretty cool as well. I also have a Dropcam, but I'll probably get rid of it, or possibly use it to monitor my shed. My thermostat is a Lenox iComfort so I can control all aspects of it from an app on my phone. Needless to say, I'm a bit addicted to this home automation stuff. It is so much fun, in a geeky way. As some of you may know from the "post good things" thread I bought a new house and moved in in December. I'm getting close to being settled and thought I'd share some of the results in the "projects" thread here. I've upped the ante on the home automation and tied it into my ADT security system. I'm sure they wouldn't be all to happy with it as I reset the installer code so I can do things, but oh well. I didn't seem to break it, lol. I've added several other switches and controllers as well - I'm so freaking addicted to this home automation! I've got an Amazon Alexa on order with a 6 pack of Dots so I can have voice command control all through my house as they have a native interface to the Vera Can't wait! I've also done some AV projects for the TV's in the bedroom and living room. In the living room I knocked out the drywall above the fireplace and added a nook for my Sonos subwoofer and recessed the cable box into the wall. I'm not the worlds greatest drywaller, but it turned out pretty nice: Bedroom AV turned out nice as well: Just finished up my garage yesterday evening (for the most part). Had the floor epoxy coated before moving in and just finished up unpacking, hanging cabinets, and running electrical last night: I also put some laminate floor in the basement bedroom (was carpet) to match the rest of the finished basement: I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself after I finish all of my projects. Probably get more real work done, lol! #gmstrong
