j/c... the thing that I think most folks are overlooking with the new alignment is that we don't need a great "GM" because Sashi will be handling many of the duties typically done by the GM in addition to his scouting/player personnel duties.
All we need is a kick-ass personnel guy, that can bring in some kick-ass scouts. A guy that knows how to spot real football talent. All of the day-to-day managerial stuff that a GM in the old sense won't even be on his plate... he's simply going to be the guy that ties together the Player Personnel & College Personnel scouting departments.
Before that, however, we need the coach that is going to own this team.... that is FAR more important, and it is why it is happening first. Nah, I thought about it right after the firings and Haslam's presser... link to my initial reaction I'm kind of excited to see this happening, but as a Brown's fan I can't let that get out of control. This could very well be the strategy that makes us contenders or the laughing stock for 10 more years. Time will tell. Haslam has a set, I'll give him that much. It takes bigger balls than footballs to try and pull this NFL version of "Money Ball" off. I hope it works at least well enough for him to look competent as an owner because I can't fathom what a reboot would look like after this one.

“Mark it down: I will never trade with the Steelers, the Ravens or the Bengals.”
YES!!!! No. We fleeced the Steelers last time we traded with them. Not when we did with the Ravens.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I can't fathom what a reboot would look like after this one. And I was just thinking that this is the first step of the next rebuild. Hm.

YES!!!! No. We fleeced the Steelers last time we traded with them. Not when we did with the Ravens. Worry about your team and how to improve it.

Well the good news is when we hear it is a "process" next year, there really will be a "process". For what it's worth...

DePodesta played WR at Harvard, and Andrew Berry played CB. Brown attended Harvard Law as a post-graduate. Don't know if he played football at Hampton where he did his undergrad. Looks like Meers is a classic math geek specialized in football math.

I would normally agree with that question., But honestly, We've had a host of "Football" Men in here and what's it gotten us? If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you'll most likely get the same result.., Maybe it's time to change it up., Besides, the coaching staff is full of "Football" men. So, while I get your reason for the question, It's time to move on and try something else.

Well both have been on this team. Kovash was with the Cowboy before coming here (Browns 3 years and Cowboys 3 years) so at least 6 years in Football
The Harvard grad guy at least 2 years with us.
So I think both are familiar with football enough and are ahead of the game than any "Football guys" on the analytic part of the game.
So promoted within just more emphasis on what they do I guess.
jmho... I like what we are doing.

Does anyone have a clue as to what the Browns management tree looks like?
Who works for whom and just what the responsibilities are of each individual?

Haslam > Brown > Jackson > Berry
Haslam is the owner/meddler Brown is the decider/contract negotiator Jackson is the coach/wanter Berry is the evaluator
DePodesta is basically a systems analyst. It was said that he reports to Haslam, but I don't know what kind of authority he has.

I liken Paul as to the IT guy he covers the entire Office Blg. Where ever there is a need he creates a program for them???
I also see Kovash as some sort of peer of Berry not a worker for him.

I remember reading that why I stated Peer not work for. I don't know when I read that somebody below Berry would not be helping him RUN THE SCOUTING DEPARTMENT...I took that to mean Both were eye to eye???
Please tell me if I'm wrong. Obviously before he got promoted he was underneath Berry.

When he hired Andrew Berry, he was called the "Vice President of Player Personnel."
I would expect that whatever title Kovash has would put him below that.
Maybe it will go something like this:
Berry: "We need a fast guy who has played both safety and corner."
Kovash: "Alright, I will go find some guys and get back to you."
(This is obviously oversimplified.)

I don't know that he has any authority other then to set the process, make sure it is followed, then present the data. Then I am sure the scouts and coaches are asked if they see what the data shows.

Two cents- Brown is the CHEESE, we have lots of other cheeses offering opinions, they make recommendations, the CHEESE makes the decision....Haslam holds him accountable....like the non-traditional....the football guys, with their superior intelligence picked- Green/mr weed, Gordon/mr weed, etc, Gilbert/personal problems, Manziel/mr drunk,...just a few examples... have to get production from top of draft....new way has got to be better, it can't get worse....can it....GO Browns!!!!

According to a top level Browns source, the in-fighting last season was much more Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine vs. Sashi Brown and Alec Scheiner than it was Farmer vs. Pettine, though those two certainly had their problems that boiled over to the field. (“The perpetual in-fighting was definitely a big reason for all the losing,” one assistant coach texted me recently.) The source said Farmer and Pettine were rarely willing to admit defeat when Brown and Scheiner had data proving some of their decisions were either off base or inconsistent. Haslam became enamored with Brown’s intellect in these clashes, so in turn, he handed the 39-year-old the keys to his football franchise and in doing so, may have already clipped the wings of whoever will be the newly appointed head coach and general manager. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-hear...power-structurefull article is here...seems how other approaches have worked out so poorly. I see no reason why we shouldn't give this new direction a chance to work or not

I have been saying for some time there has to be a reason Haslam made these moves. He didn't just wake up on morining and decide he was going with Sashi.
He was in the draft rooms and in the meeting rooms and came to the conclusion that Brown had it right way more then did Farmer and Pet.

I know that hope is what drives man to carry on, but man, this set-up that Haslam has created is almost guaranteed to fail.

Like taking Manziel over Teddy and Carr? Pffftttt........ Farmer is on record Johnny was his pick. You know who Brown liked? He may have said Ted or Carr was who he would have picked. You keep saying you want football guys, but what exactly is a football guy? I mean, it isn't that darn hard to see a good football player. I am not talking about being a good coach, that is a whole different deal. Take the coaching out of it. We have had football guys selecting players for a long time and they have failed. Was Mike Holmgren a football guy? Davis? Farmer was a football guy. We could have thrown darts at names and done no worse.

Oh, we only parade that argument out when we are----oooppps---defending Farmer. He's gone now, so it's all his fault. LMAO
I keep saying I like football guys? Really?
peen, you sound like Daman. Just because our past football guys failed is not a reason to believe non-football guys will succeed. That is the dumbest thing you've ever said.
