Nice post. Same conclusion here, but would keep Pettine over Farmer, if I had to decide. At least he has the offense performing. What has Farmer done right again? Bowe? And he missed on 5 of 6 1st&2nd rd picks. Where did he get good players late again? I see no three down players, only decent situational/complementary pieces like Kirksey, Cooper, Duke, Gilbert

I would fire Farmer (and Kuharich, Haslam can play pretend GM the rest of the season) and the DC on the spot to send a message and then tell Pettine and the team to go at least 4-4 the 2nd half to save his job. The answer should be clear if he has the backing of his team. Pettine takes over DC duties full time and let Flip handle the Offense alone, he has earned it.

I think some good points have been made since I last checked on this thread.

I want to clarify something. I am not placing all the blame on Farmer and giving Pet a free pass. I agree w/those who have said that both deserve criticism.

My opinion could change, but at this point in time, I would give Pet more time and fire Farmer after the season concludes.

I think coaches can grow and some of the mistakes that Pet is making can be corrected. I do not believe that guys become marginally better at evaluating talent.

I do not think we can afford to blow yet another draft. The guy walked into a great situation. He has had 4 first round picks in his first two years. He's had second round picks both years. That's a damn good scenario to inherit.

While it's too early to give a final evaluation on any of his players, my opinion is that all six of those guys are disappointing---at best.

We simply can't afford to gamble that he will all of a sudden "get it."

I hope I am wrong, but I think Pet might end up being the sacrificial lamb in this dumpster fire. It's not that I love Pet so much, but I firmly believe that we can not take another chance w/Farmer running the draft.

but why should we take another chance at Pettine coaching this team? It doesn't make sense that you think Pettine can grow, but somehow Farmer can't.

I want both gone. I don't wanna take a chance blowing another draft, and i don't wanna take a chance that the defense somehow regresses even MORE under pettine.

First of all...........I misspoke. Bitonio was a good pick. I didn't give Farmer credit for that one.

I do know a little bit about coaching and scouting players. There is a huge difference.

I hate to see him go. I think that he is a really bright offensive mind. Yes he still has some things to learn, but man, he got a lot out of 3 QBs many people thought had little chance to do anything this year.

Maybe, but just because he is interviewing doesn't automatically mean he'll get the job.

Right. But the fact that we let him interview means he will likely end up somewhere else.

i'm fine with him leaving. He did really good things with our passing game this year I think but I also think his abandonment of the run game cost us games, and especially cost us effectiveness in the red zone. JMO.

Yup. If nothing else, while the passing game was decent, there was nothing special going on there, at all.

Also, with Manziel being gone, there is no real reason to keep the same offense.

If we could do it, I'd see if we could talk Chud into coming back as the OC. I liked his offense.

I'd say that there a zero percent chance of that happening.

I would take that coaching staff back in a heartbeat.

I wonder what plans the Colts have for him, If he has the chance to work with Luck, then we have no luck in getting him.

I would bet that there is zero chance of him ever working for Haslam ever again.

Jimmy did admit a lot of the blame is on him..

Jimmy's probably going to say to Chud, "hey, you owe me some money, you can come back and work it off "

That's a professional bridge that Haslam can rebuild in a minute, should he choose to. Of all candidates, though, Chud knows first hand what it was like here in the past, so Haslam would have to show & prove to him that things are different now.

Which, incidentally, would actually be a small feather in the cap of showing that we're on the right track.

I bet Chud would see "Cleveland Browns" on the caller ID, and not even pick up. He was treated with such disrespect when he was fired, that I see no chance he ever comes to Cleveland, except as a member of a visiting team. Haslam could try and pass the way things happened off on Banner, but it was widely reported that he was all in on firing Chud.

I think that I have a better chance of winning the lottery than Chud coming back to the Browns as a coach.

Though it would be so Browns to rehire him and have to give him 2 paychecks every payday, one for the new contract and one for the old contract.

Chud's offense was one of the best offenses we've seen in Cleveland. It was awesome. Chud was a hard driving, demanding perfection kind of OC.

I was excited when he became the HC because of his time at OC. Unfortunately, Chud the HC and Chud the OC were two completely, different people.

chud was trying to win with a roster heckert put together.. no coach could win...

Actually, Chud has a better chance of winning the lottery than you have of becoming our coach...

The team did NOT quit on Pet.

I still say that we should have retained Pet. That will change if we hire a huge name like Saban.

Pett's gone... nothing can be done about that.... and I hate the idea of Saban.

I'll state the obvious: There's no way we need to concern ourselves about him. Moving on...

DeFilippo is interviewing for the 49ers "head coaching position" today (or something like it).

Wherever he ends up, I'm going to be watching and rooting for him to succeed. He may be a bit wet behind the ears, but I believe he has a bright future...

I really like Flip, and I hope we are able to keep him. I liked him from the 1st time he was mentioned, and I had a chance to really investigate who he is. I might have even been the 1st "Flip per". .... or something.

Meh. We have a top 3 line in the NFL. It's not hard to build a good offense on that foundation. Our past 3 OC's have all been 'offensive geniuses', and none of them, perhaps besides Norv, have impressed me. Shanny Jr was on to something with the HUNH, but moved away from that. His offense really sputtered out in the 2nd half of the season and he couldn't figure out how to use Josh Gordon once he got him back. I wish Flip the best, but I'll be holding my breath on talks of his genius.

Yeah, a great OL and 3 so-so QBs, no exceptionally gifted, or productive receivers, and one TE who had a great year.

Out of that he managed to get over 4000 yards passing for the year.

These have been problems that we've been facing for the past 3 years now... Our lack of offensive talent can be considered a control group for at least 3 years, if not, much longer.

We had major injuries on offense this year, losing both Bitonio and Greco to injury, along with having just about every receiver (except Bowe) who started the season on the roster either on IR, or otherwise banged up. Oddly enough, Benjamin was the only guy to make it through the season relatively intact and healthy.

I think that Flip did a great job, especially given what he started with, and ended up with. (A receiver corps in the final game of Benjamin, Jennings, and Pryor) Marlon Moore played receiver .... until he got hurt. Hawkins missed over half the season to injury. Hartline was banged up, and missed the last game with a concussion.

You aren't going to win much with that group ..... and our starters weren't light years better.

Flip did a great job with what he had, and other teams in the NFL seem to recognize that fact.

And last year Shanny got an injured team the second half of the year. And before that Norv and them had to deal with injuries too.

So Flip is roughly on par with 2 very good coordinators? I say that sets him up for a rather promising future, given that this was his "rookie" season, and the 2 before him are very well seasoned pros.
