Redskins Plan To Release QB Robert Griffin III

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Redskins plan to release QB Robert Griffin III at some point in the coming months.

According to Rapoport, it’s just a matter of time before Washington moves on from the No. 2 overall pick.

Interestingly enough, Rapoport mentions that it was important to owner Dan Synder to have RGIII on their roster all season.

Griffin, 25, was in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract when Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million several months ago.

However, they elected to bench him and make RGIII their third-string quarterback to prevent him from getting injured while allowing Kirk Cousins to show what he can do with the opportunity.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

Thanks for the post, Memphis. Man, what a waste of draft picks! Or was it that he was utilized incorrectly?

He was worth the picks if he had stayed healthy.

The sad part? WE had all those picks and went 3-13 while despite having none of those picks the Redskins just made the playoffs. Let that sting set in.

No real surprise as things turned out.

I really thought this kid had "it". Unfortunately, injuries derailed his career, and then, if the reported attitude problems are true, his attitude made sure it stayed derailed.

I still think that he can be a very good QB, but it is going to take the right situation, and it is going to have to bust his butt and dedicate himself to being great. Just like Manziel, he has to learn that his innate talent just isn't enough in the NFL. I also think that he needs to be toughened up mentally. (which I did not think was a problem when he came into the NFL)

It will be interesting to see where he goes, and if he is able to reinvent himself. Heck, Blaine Gabbert managed to look like he could, possibly, be an NFL QB this year. If he could reinvent himself, after the disaster that was his time in Jax, then anyone "can". For RG3, the question is, will he?

And they just got blown out by the Packers (who were struggling for the past 6-8 weeks). The Skins could be back to losing next season.

I agree, but they are still better off than us at this point in time.

That first sentence is such a passive aggressive piece of garbage. All of it, the entire letter and especially the first sentence, completely unnecessary.

I think it was the last year of the Mega rookie contracts???

He definitely became damaged goods and i thought he came back too early and damaged some more.

From what I saw.

jmho - Now after sitting for a season...and off season will he be mended and ready for a new start? I see Jerry Jones investing.

Bradford was the last year of Mega contracts, that's just being the #2 pick in the draft. Bradford was #1 and got 60 mil.

That whole letter is a passive aggressive load of garbage. I was hoping that the benching and demotion would've been the humble pie he needed to make the turnaround, but apparently not. The guy is more gifted than Manziel, but Manziel showed improvement in his weak areas, and RG3 doesn't, and that letter tells me that improvement isn't coming.

I'm changing my opinion from wanting to get him on the cheap and see what happens to avoiding him like the plague.

So the Cowboys are going to have like 10 FA QBs next season?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the letter. That collection of sayings was originally written in the 60s, and has probably been used millions of times since. (especially since it has falsely been attributed to Mother Teresa)

RGIII's career... what a hot mess that starts from ownership and on down. Just seriously, what a mess.

I'm curious what team next picks him up, and for how much. You just know if he's released, he'll be in demand if at the least as a backup role.

I think the text is Mother Theresa's or something like it. Odd parting gift.

We don't need to get this guy IMO.

Just say to NO to RGIII coming here. He WAS a running QB. He can no longer run making him effectively useless in the NFL given his lack of skill as a pocket passer.

Just hope Dallas takes Johnny off our hands before RGIII gets there. LOL

It would appear so. #2 pick, McCown and Davis. Put the rookie in and let him learn. Give him some weapons please. These guys will have to grow together.

We can only hope things turn out for the best (for once).

We could pay a lot for Bradford? FA.

RG3...who knows what our New Coaching staff will want. If there is a combo of Want from football people and the Math to make it a good move to do...who knows who we will have?

Tab, what's your take on RG3 as of now?

Would you want him here?

I personally wouldn't. He can't be a running QB anymore and wasn't very good at anything else. Even if he somehow magically got his legs back, he would just get hurt early in the season anyway. I would rather have that spot to develop a draft pick.

RG3 didnt have a great rookie year because he ran all over the place like Vick or Young..

He had a great rookie year because he played very well overall.

He had a terrible knee injury. And came back/was brought back waaay too early..

I think, taken wise, he can still be a Franchise QB.

Personality wise, I don't know.

Separately, as it relates to the trade.. Out of us, who got nothing, STL, who got everything, and Washington, who got the QB... No one came out ahead..

Almost all of RG III success was setup off his ability to run the ball. His feet created huge throwing windows. Once those windows closed he was a below average QB, holding the ball too long and taking big hits.

He is a project that I would stay away from.

You see nothing wrong w/the letter? He left it for the Redskins to read.

Things like "people are often unreasonable, irrational, and self centered." And then....."If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you anyway." rofl

RGIII was disrespecting the team. And most of those comments seem to fit him more than the coaches and players.

What a jerk!

100% agree, it's almost beyond comprehension that he is that arrogant. Either he didn't know how it sounded, which leads me to believe he is dumb or he knew how it sounded and he is just an ass. Either way, he looks immature.

He being arrogant doesnt change the fact that Mike Shanahan ruined his knees by allowing him to come back too soon.

Its my theory, that Mike Shanahan felt his tenure at Washington would not be a long one, and went for the "quick win" by putting RG3 back out there, as opposed to protecting a long term investment.

And Shannahan putting him back out there too early doesn't change the fact that his teammates can't stand him. It doesn't change the fact that he went behind the backs of two separate coaches to complain to the owner. It doesn't change the fact that he never learned how to read coverages. It doesn't change the fact that he drifts in the pocket and takes needless sacks. It doesn't change the fact that he left a vindictive letter for the team that had as less maturity than a middle school kid.

We might be able to go 11-5 in the NFC east this year. People will understand this when we play them next year.

I take it you didn't watch a lot of NFC East games. They were atrocious. Anyone could beat them, and did. I'm not sure if you put them into another division that they all wouldn't go 5-11 or worse.

I guess that means you were serious.

I take it that you didn't watch a lot of Brown's games. They were atrocious. Anyone could beat them, and did. I'm not sure if you put the Browns in The Big Ten if they could win 5 games.

Btw.....who is coaching the Browns next year? Who is their QB? Wide receivers? Are they keeping their OL intact? Who is starting at CB? Are they keeping Gipson? Who is going to rush the passer? Who is really running the draft?

But yeah, the Browns will crush the Redskins. notallthere
