Just clicking, on NFL.com, there seems to be a fair amount of talk about what a great match Kap and Kelly will be and that they could be a DC's worst nightmare.

Or maybe some people around the league realized how little talent the Browns had and it wasn't all about poor coaching?

The NFL is full of successful coaches who were fired by someone.

I understand that, I just didn't think he'd get another chance as a DC so quickly.

Just wait. He took a job with Chip Kelly's defense. Chips offense had the lowest T.O.P in the NFL for the last two years. I'm not seeing a long stay in San Fran for O Neil with this move.

I'm willing to bet that he gets replaced before the season is even over.

How in God's name could a team hire O'Neill after the miserable 2 seasons he had with us? What did they base this hire on? Well, I guess we're not the only ones that make dumb moves. confused

His first year wasn't horrid.. But by Pets own admission, he spent a lot of time with the D that first year. The second year, Pet said he was going to spend more time with the O. That's what I think spelled the end for Oneil.

Anyway, when left to his own devices, he didn't fair well...

I,m not saying O Neil is stupid, or that he will not be successful as a defensive Coach in the NFL. What I am saying is he set himself up for a kick in the gonads from a guy wearing steel toed boots.

I get what you are saying, but I can't see how anybody can think this guy is a DC. His players had no respect for him, and his schemes were horrible.

(Also, within that Tweet it says that Pettine is likely to sit out 2016.)

The Santa Clara 49er's have lost their freaking minds. I'm no Mangini fan but I'd certainly prefer him to Oneil. Hell I'd prefer Rob Ryan to Oneil. Why didn't they call Dick Jauron? He's ten times the DC that Oneil is. Insane in the membrane....

Obviously he is young and had a good interview. This will be his first job without latching onto the coat tails of his HS buddy. In his resume he had been working steadily in this league and rising up the ladder. Then again what would Chip know about NFL Defense...lol laugh

Ain't that the truth defense is missing a lot of pieces. I'll bet he gets little to no help from FA and draft.

Looks like they are trying their best to rid themselves of anything Kelly may have touched..

Yeah, they're just wiping away any Chip Kelly fingerprint. I didn't think they'd be able to trade Murray though.

Chip Kelly and the Vanishing Offense:

https://theringer.com/chip-kelly-san-francisco-49ers-offense-f332f053870e#.n0etxqcyc

This is really, really good.

Quote:
“Chip Kelly is a friend, but I could not run the offense he runs,” Stanford head coach David Shaw said this summer at a coaching clinic. “If you run an up-tempo offense, you better be good at staying on the field. If you cannot get first downs, your defense will play the entire game.” Indeed, the 2015 Eagles defense defended an incredible 1,148 plays, while the team that defended the fewest, the Seahawks, played just 947 snaps. At an NFL average of around 65 plays a game, Kelly’s defense effectively played three more games than Seattle’s.

I wanted Kelly before he went to the Eagles and then again this off-season. I thought he could adapt his system to play in the NFL. He did at one point, but then didn't do anything any further. It doesn't seem like he is cut out for the NFL because the game is so different from college (as the article explains).

Quote:
The first idea of the curse is that innovations that can’t be protected frequently don’t benefit the innovator, an issue for Kelly given that one can’t patent football play, and any play that works one week is sure to be used across the league by the next. Indeed, NFL coaches as diverse as Hue Jackson, Pete Carroll, Mike McCarthy, Mike McCoy, Bill O’Brien, Adam Gase, and even Belichick have co-opted Kelly’s ideas, and Kelly’s former quarterbacks coach, current Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, said frankly that “the majority of what we’re doing [on offense] is Chip Kelly stuff.” The history of football is in many ways the history of men who watched others win with their ideas.

But the second idea behind the Innovator’s Curse is that, having once innovated, it’s increasingly difficult for the innovator to continue innovating. To use Silicon Valley examples, there are countless IBMs, Xeroxes, and Yahoos: one-time disruptors whose cultures and ideas ossified and who eventually became the disrupted.

thanks for that

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

This has to be out of context, but still pretty funny:

Quote:
49ers' DC Jim O'Neil just said he doesn't know what "gap integrity" means. We noticed, Jim.
