I said that we would have to utilize all three avenues: the draft, trades, and free agency to acquire our qb. What I laid out had nothing to do w/winning a Super Bowl next year. In fact, despite what tab and 32 say, I believe the Browns will suck again next year. I believe that we will suck again next year also. But even if we have the #1 overall pick in next year's draft, I don't see any draft eligible Qb's worthy of that pick. So we are in the same situation. Premier Qb's don't get traded or hit free agency. So that leaves us with taking a gamble on a teams backup Qb. Risky at best. Brad Kaaya, Gunner Kiel and Patrick Towles disagree. I've seen Kaaya and Kiel and I'm not impressed. I know nothing about Towles (not even what school he plays for) so I will give you that one.

Watched Towles vs South Carolina.
1st thing that sticks out is that the Kentucky Wr's and Rb's have terrible hands. Not just pass catching but holding onto the ball while running.
Towles has a huge arm. Dare I say elite?
He has some work to do. I'm not sold on him being a top 5 talent at this point but I will be interested to see how he progresses.
#1 He needs to improve his pocket awareness.
#2 He has a tendency to drop his elbow when he throws. This causes to ball to sail high. This can be fixed but the tendency will always be their and will need constant vigilance to keep it at bay.
#3 Has the tendency to throw the ball where the receiver is rather than where he is going to be. He gets away with it because he has a cannon for an arm.
#4 Saw one pass where he did a Derek Anderson. He fired a fastball to a receiver 5 yards away. Not his norm because there were multiple other short passes that he didn't do this. Wonder what happened on this particular pass.
If he can fix these issues then he could become an elite passer. We'll see how he develops.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Towels was at ky, transfered out no idea where he is going. Dude has a big ben arm and uncle ben accuracy.
I bring in RG3. Doesnt cost us anything. You dont have to reach for a QB in the first. I believe he could be a good fit for Hue's offense. He competes with McCown. you can still draft a QB you like if you feel there is a bargain to be had.

Or did I confuse him with someone else?

Problem was RG3 had direct access to the owner and could overshoot the coach. With Hue That wont happen. I just believe the kids career is salvageable. He isnt the runner he was but the kid has talent and now that he has fallen on his face in a place where so much pressure was on him. He is now following Manziel and Weeden. There really isnt any pressure. His contract would be cheap. If he performs yay. If he sucks, who cares.
Doesnt stop you from drafting a QB but you now can avoid going high for somone that just isnt worth it.
His EGO and ability to go above the coach really hit teammates hard. Learning experience. There is just absolutely no downside to bringing him in.

I've begun to warm up to this option as of late. I like what McCown did last season, but I don't want him starting Week 1 and if the Browns don't think a QB is worth it at #2, then I do think someone like Griffin is a legitimate option. Bradford too, perhaps? And if someone like a "Andy Daulton" falls to us at the first pick in the 2nd round, swoop him up. ANd I say AD, because that's essentially where he was drafted.
I'm not a QB evaluator so I don't know how legitimate or not any of these guys are at #2.
I thought RG3 did some nice things while in D.C., but does have baggage he needs to shed, that's for sure.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I wouldn't mind Bradford. He's apparently going to want a tonne of money but it ain't my money to spend or not spend.

That's fine, Jester. I know you want a qb this year and I can understand that.
I was simply explaining my own point of view that I don't think the qbs in this class are very good and that the Browns would be married to that guy for a few years and almost assuredly would ignore upgrading the position during that time.
No one can be proven right or wrong at this time. It's just discussion. I just haven't seen the point of view I am making discussed much. I think the team needs to be fairly certain that the guy they draft can succeed rather than just reaching for a guy because they have a need.

Here is a qb to keep an eye on for the future: Hayden Moore. I think that is how you spell both names. He plays for Cincinnati. Has all the tools. I was very impressed w/him.

Which pass rusher do you think fits us best, Vers? I like Bosa and Spence, but I like Bosa better as a 4-3 end and Spence comes with some red flags I'm not sure we'll want to risk after our experience with Gordon. Leonard Floyd I'm not that high on. Do you take Calhoun that high? I wouldn't mind him in the 2nd round, but 2 sounds high. Or are you thinking a bigger body? Also, Solomon got hurt and our scheme/playcalling was...atrocious, so I'm not sure how much to factor those into our need.
There is also not a clear cut stud receiver in this class, but it looks like there will be pretty good depth at the position. Hopefully we can get Marvin Jones without overpaying and a solid prospect falls to the third.
So we're back to who do we take at 2. If there's a QB Hue thinks could be a franchise guy, we almost have to take him. I think Wentz could be that guy, but who knows. I don't think Wentz is there right now, but I think he has the drive to get there and the tools to work with without any character red flags.
If none of the QBs are found worthy, I might consider taking Myles Jack. Dansby's getting (been) old, and Jack fits the new pass happy NFL. UCLA had him covering receivers regularly. He's supposedly healed from his early season injury and should be ready for the combine.
How is our O-line going to look? If we lose Mack and Schwartz, do you take Tunsil if he's there and BPA?

That is an excellent post w/good questions and good points. Let me think about it. It would be great if guys like steve, jester, etc....who study the draft would help educate us on some of the guys. About the only thing I can answer for sure right now is that: no, I would not an OT at number 2. I love the OL, but we need impact players. Yes, Joe T impacts the game, but I mean guys who can change the game on any given play. I do have to add this...........I really, really like what Spence can bring to the table. If the Browns were to trade down, acquire more picks and grab this guy later in the first......well....... Oh man, that's gonna make some people angry.

I think there are only 2 good options for QB this year.
1) If the Browns think Goff is a potential franchise QB then he must be the pick.
2) If the Browns don't think Goff is a future franchise QB then they should select a pass rusher like Bosa then look for the best QB option at the top of the 2nd round like Cook or Hackenburg.
I just don't see any QB's that will be available in trades or free agencies that will be any better options than McCown. 3rd option is to drop down further into round 1 and take Goff, Wentz, or Lynch. If Bosa doesn't go #1, we'll have trading partners.

That's fine, Jester. I know you want a qb this year and I can understand that. Fact is, we do not have a long term solution. You can argue as to whether or not we have a short term solution. I am not opposed to not drafting a Qb at #2. I'm interested in hearing what better options are available.

There is also not a clear cut stud receiver in this class, but it looks like there will be pretty good depth at the position. Hopefully we can get Marvin Jones without overpaying and a solid prospect falls to the third. I disagree with this. I think Laquon very much resembles Larry Fitzgerald. I will say he probably drops more passes. But as far as his size and strength and what he adds blocking in the run game and his difficulty to cover in the red zone they are pretty similar to me. Also, Josh Doctson is kind of AJ Green lite. Marvin Jones is not a top receiver. Neither is whoever we would get in the third round. I would be surprised if Gordon is on our team past 2015, so I think we need one. If none of the QBs are found worthy, I might consider taking Myles Jack. Dansby's getting (been) old, and Jack fits the new pass happy NFL. UCLA had him covering receivers regularly. He's supposedly healed from his early season injury and should be ready for the combine. I wouldn't hate a Jack pick. I agree we need a difference maker at ILB to take a significant step on defense. He is a very good coverage linebacker. He's not Keuchly or Urlacher, but he's pretty good. I agree with both of these points. As we've agreed on, Spence is the best pure pass rusher in the draft. It's just a question of whether or not the Browns would bring on another pick with a substance history (especially a first rounder) after the issues with Manziel, Gordon, and Armonty.

Ok, but who besides Manziel, goes? McCown? I think that McCown is serviceable and seems VERY willing to tutor/mentor a young QB. I'm not sure RG3 fits the mold of a young QB that will take mentoring. Just not sure of that. So, you have McCown, RG3, a Draft pick and that's it. Would that work for you?

His EGO and ability to go above the coach really hit teammates hard. Learning experience. There is just absolutely no downside to bringing him in. The Mother Theresa letter he left at his locker on the way out tells me that he didn't "learn" much of has been humbled. He sees himself as a victim and a martyr. There are legit reasons why his teammates and coaches couldn't stand the guy. And I don't get how you can say that he wouldn't go to the owner in Cleveland? That makes absolutely no sense given Haslam's track record. And why would he be cheap? Not arguing about that--because I don't know---but, what makes you say that w/confidence? I also want to touch on his skill set. Positives: --Good arm --Nice touch when needed --Good mechanics --Nice accuracy on deep throws Negatives: --Did not do a good job of reading defenses pre-snap --Terrible job of reading coverages post-snap --Held the ball too long---offshoot of point 2 --Awful pocket presence. Rolled into sacks --Bad decision making I am wondering if all the people who still supporters of this guy have ever considered just how bad he had to be to wear out his welcome in Washington? They gave up a ton for him. One of the biggest deals in NFL history. The owner loved him. Yet, he was benched and they don't want him back. That astounds me.

No risk High Reward. give him a chance to compete with Josh. None of these QBs are gonna come out of this draft and be ready to run a team. If someone is willing to pay him big money, they can have him.
Hue's O takes a little longer for plays to develop, gives him a bit more time to read the coverage. I felt coming out this was the only type of pro scheme he would ever be able to run.
Just dont confuse me wanting for RG3 to have a shot at competition with believing him to be a savior. I like Josh as the backup but I would rather he not be the starter. I would prefer Fitzpatrick but he is likely resigning with the Jets.
Bradford is to fragile to invest a dollar in and he is likely heading back to Philly. Mallett I would love but his whole late for practice stuff is to much of a Manziel red flag. Just not a lot out there. Give up a 5th or 6th for EJ Manuel?
Vers what would be your solution? Just not a lot of choices out there imho.

Agreed on his exit note in Washington. Up until that, I thought he could be a nice low risk high reward guy. Skillwise, he's as good as anyone to bring in and try to fix if you have a QB coach that specializes in reclamation projects. Attitude is not something you can fix, but perhaps that's something Gruden already took care of this past year with the benching. Apparently not, with that note.
I dunno. I wouldn't be too upset if they brought him in as Manziel was on his way out, and stashed him as a backup (even our 3rd QB, depending on the draft). Having him duke it out with a high draft pick with his NFL career hanging in the balance could possibly do wonders for his work ethic and attitude. The message of "there's nothing stopping us from cutting you tomorrow" would be a strong push to get him to fall in line.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Vers what would be your solution? Just not a lot of choices out there imho. First of all, I hope my post didn't come across as me trying to bash your opinion. That was not my intent. I'm just not a fan of RGIII's game and attitude. As to your question: I really don't have a good solution for this year, Mourg. I realize that not many will wanna hear this, but I would wait things out if I could not make a trade [which is highly doubtful.] I might take a flyer on a qb later in the draft, but I would have no expectations that he is the guy. Mourg, I just don't like any of this year's top QBs enough to commit to any of them. I also know not many wanna hear this, but Farmer/Haslam really blew it a couple of years ago. I liked Teddy. You liked Carr. Had we drafted either, we would not be talking about QBs right now. We had a very good chance of acquiring a quality qb that year and we blew it. You pay for your sins in the NFL. The Browns are paying now. And by reaching for a qb at number 2, the Browns could be paying for another 3-4 years. You don't fix a mistake by making another mistake.

Very similar. The only one i really believe will be a good QB is Lynch but he is gonna need time to develop. That Memphis Team as a whole was just putrid. Again, though you are projecting a guy from a quick wide spread into a Hue/Saunders vertical attack. Carr had his brother teaching him pro schemes in his off time. I believe he can be a superior version of Flacco.
Goff no accuracy to the outside. Horrible Fit small ball QB.
Wentz I see at BEST Andy Dalton. Got a very similar grade as to what I had on Dalton. Now Hue did get a lot out of Dalton this year but damn, there is no way you spend a high first on these guys.
The rest are all 2nd rounders and beyond.

Well without the mental issues we were going to have McCown, Manziel and a drafted rookie QB.
Now we have a void with Manziel leaving football I guess.
Depending on the cost so the "INVESTMENT" will not be great or burdensome a kid like RG3 could be a good investment. If he works hard and well with/for Hue he might start ahead of McCown if our rookie is learning at leaps and bounds we could also take that reclamation project and reap a fast return before the Trading deadline to a desperate team with a QB injury or something???
But at least we won't have our EGGS into one basket. So from Heck or high water one way or another we can find our Franchise QB...leave no stone unturned.

jmho This scenario of McCown-RG III-and a draftee leaves no room for Austin Davis who may very well be a viable backup QB. IMO, a more realistic scenario would be either McCown, Davis, draftee or McCown-RG III-Davis and use the pick on an impact player...
