and real quick, because Arch is so easy to counter in arguments.

Yes, i smoke weed. surprise surprise!!

you know what weed hasn't done? it hasn't made me pick up a gun and cap somebody.

as a matter of fact, that hasn't happened ever in this country, i believe.

but you know what drug does that on a daily basis, and is legal? alcohol.

Hell, we can make a very serious correlation that alcohol, domestic violence, and gun violence goes hand and hand.

but Arch, you told me before you drink.

so how come my vice is always in question, but yours never is?

something to think about.

So easy to counter in arguments?

Please.

As to your question, one is legal, one isn't.

OH, you know what drinking hasn't done? Made me pick up a gun and, as you so eloquently stated, "cap somebody."

Yes, I drink. You do too.

As for your stats earlier - take the suicides out of the equation. I know, that's tough to do - but do it. Suicide is, by definition, harming ONES SELF.

Look at the stats I posted earlier (yesterday). Something like 9500 gun murders. Out of 300 million people. (I think I posted it in this thread).

Oh, one last thing: You don't think pot specifically, has ever caused someone to pick up a gun and 'cap' someone? Ever?

Correct me if I'm wrong here. Alcohol is legal. Pot is not here in Ohio. What am I missing? What does either, for that matter, have to do with guns being legal?

yes, easy. like this post is...lol.

and no, i haven't seen any story that reads somebody got high off weed and shot somebody in this country.

there MIGHT be one or two stories, but i'm looking right now and haven't found one.

but you know what i am finding? articles left and right on people getting drunk and shooting somebody.

And i'm not gonna take suicide out of the equation. that's stupid. suicide, homicide, still gun violence.

don't cherry pick stats, that only shows that you have an even weaker argument than expected.

and it has everything to do with the discussion about the gun culture and society problems.

countered.

2013. According to the FBI, 8454 homicides by gun.

https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/cr...n_2009-2013.xls

I wish the FBI broke that down as to how many had illegal drugs involved, but I know they can't.

300,000,000 plus people in this country, and 8454 were killed by guns. (2123)

Compare that to drugs - legal AND illegal. You'll have to actually look at the charts, as the link breaks it down into prescription drugs, cocaine, heroin, etc.

Your argument is flawed, yet again.

Somebody who ODs on a drug didn't violate somebody else's righ to live.

A homicide means somebody took someone else's life.

You're making this easy for me to be anti-gun. But keep going.

I tried to bring this similar issue up once before and kinda got beat up on it, though my approach was a little more defined.

When people talk about the "gun culture" in America it's used as a one-size fits all label by many gun control folks. I see two distinct gun "cultures" in this country:

1) those who view firearms as a means of protection (to include those who use it as a tool in hunting)

and

2) those who view guns as a means to an ends.

You have groups like the NRA, and many folks on this board who fall in to that first group.

The second group would include (but not limited to) murders and especially the inner city gang violence that account for the majority of gun related deaths and injuries.

Last time I brought this up I was told there was no such distinction. I'm curious now after reading some more personal stories on the subject if there is anyone willing to still say there is no difference and if they do, I challenge them to tell me how Arch's 11yr old is the same as a 19 yr old drug dealing gang banger.

I think these distinctions are important because people use the stats of inner city violence but then try to attribute that to people like Arch and FBN

And you, sir, are acting ignorant.

You want to include suicides in the gun violence numbers, yet you want to ignore drug deaths because they didn't hurt someone else?

Death is death, I know that. But you can't include suicide in gun violence if you choose to ignore drug deaths.

Neither suicide by gun or drug overdose violates someone else's right to live. Consequently, take away suicides from the gun violence numbers you proclaim.

Your argument is not just flawed, it's wrong.

You keep being anti gun......but wanting to get guns.

8454 people killed by guns in 2013, according to the FBI. I gave the link.

You go on harping about 8545 gun deaths, yet ignore all the other deaths. Should we look at auto accident deaths? Bet those numbers would make you give up your car, don't you think?

i don't ignore drug deaths.

i'm the one who made the post a few months ago about the effect on drugs with cartels and violence.

I'm not getting guns. i considered it, but i just can't right now.

as much as you're trying, there's no double standards my way.

What i'm saying is that when it comes to the USE of drugs, it can't be compared to gun deaths.

but see, i have to do the work for you to make your own argument actually work.

so here's some advice: for your argument to work, you need to find the numbers on homicides committed while drunk/under the influence of drugs by use of guns.

since we're talking about guns, you can't take out suicide by guns because that's a huge piece of the pie. you can't take out ANYTHING that relates to gun if we're talking about guns.

if you want to talk about deaths from OD's, than make a separate thread about it.

it's sad that i gotta give a 40+ year old man tips on how to make a proper argument. I'm not acting ignorant, you just can't formulate your points properly.

Swish,

sorry man, but you are wrong... adding suicides with the use of a gun only pads and distorts the facts. The fact of the matter is that when it comes to suicide, the means is nearly irrelevant. The most relevant part is when that person makes the decision to go through with it. After that, the person will do whatever it takes: drugs, running the car in a closed garage, hanging, creating a lethal chemical mixture inside your car in a public park, hell, I've heard from 2 of my academy mates that they've gone to separate suicides where they had built an actual guillotine!

Point being, even if you took the gun out of the hands of all those who used it to commit suicide, nearly all of them would still be dead, just by a different means.

That isn't true at all.

It's easier to pull the trigger than it is any other means to kill yourself.

You guys continuously ignore the fact that it is simply harder to kill someone or ones self with any other tool than a gun.

We can't even get that in agreement. We see it two different ways. I disagree with everything you say.

I'm not disagreeing that its easier. But you are missing the fact that once a person decides to kill themselves, they'll do what it takes. No one says "Well, it's easier this way so I guess I'll do it, but I won't do it that way because it's more difficult". When you break down the suicide numbers along gender lines, the large majority of women attempt/commit suicide by overdosing on pills and other drugs. Men on the other hand do use a gun the majority of the time. The means by which a person commits suicide rarely impacts whether or not someone decides to do it. After all, wouldn't you agree that a people have way more access to a knife than they do a gun? Yet no one blames the knife for suicide.. no one blames the pills... no one blames the rope they hung themselves with... but suddenly a gun is the determining factor in whether or not someone kills themselves? It doesn't hold water.

And no, I have yet to see anyone ignore that it's easier to kill someone with a gun, in fact just the opposite. Guys like Arch and FBN just got done describing the reasons why they taught their kids the way they did about firearms. Anyone who has been in favor talks about carrying and expanding places you can carry because IF they should find themselves confronted in a life and death scenario that gun goes a long way towards leveling the playing field or even tipping the encounter in your favor.

Beyond the message boards, there are thousands of pro gun people that constantly talk about the lethality and effectiveness of calibers and ammo designs. Ever read or see a .45 vs. 9mm debate??? Sometimes it gets as stupid as some of the stuff get in to around here lol

Its because know matter what I'd say you wouldnt agree so what is the point in it...kids die being beaten to death...shaken baby syndrome...jesus the list goes on...and as you pointed out te guns arent going anywhere so what is your solution??

Mine is I trained my sons to be proficient understand death can happen from horseplay and being around one of their dopey friends who has one and pulls it out...told to run from where ever it is and tell an adult.

See I saw a bunch of mouth foaming from you but no where was there any what you perceive to be solutions...my solution was to familiarize my children and have them understand when to get out of dodge when someone was being unsafe with a gun...it worked they didnt shoot anyone or get shot....so what is your solution??

Quote:
FBH. you are right. we are the greatest. we are #1 or top 10 in:

gun deaths, gun violence, people in prison, etc. kids dying from gun violence, kids getting injured from gun violence.

what an amazing thing to be #1 or top 10 in the world in. everybody give yourselves a pat on the back.

Well we are the greatest...so not to make this a go back to Africa moment...but if we are so terrible why dont you take your resources and move to one of the more developed countries and you would no longer have to worry about it right??

This is an honest sincere question Swish...you have the ability to move there and since you like to bring up how great they are doing why not move there?? I can tell you there are problems no matter where you live...violent people everywhere...and without getting into statistics you will find out real fast just how violent and screwed up other places are to.

I dont mind you disagree...but I would like to hear some solutions with your bashing..ok maybe not bashing...complaining?? better word? and if you have the ability to live in Germany or where ever why arent you there already...I mean your childrens lives are depending on that decision no?? If I'm coming across dickish my apologies.

while the "go move to<insert wherever> line is nice for a quick shot, in reality it doesn't make sense.

that argument boils down to "stop trying to change the country for the better in go move somewhere else".

so the only solution to this is to go move? nah, it can't be to bring awareness and try to make the situation better, right?

so i should just accept that kids are getting shot in the streets in my country? instead of trying to change that, i should go move?

you're right, it is a dickish comment. it's also stupid as hell.

No what I'm saying is...you constantly compare us to over there and how it is so much better or how we should be more like them...you have family over there your wife is from over there so why wouldnt it be viable for you to go??

I would if I had the ability to do so and thought it was better then we I currently reside...hell I did for a while...and came to the conclusion America is the greatest and why people are trying to come here from all over the world.

Maybe it was dickish..wasnt meant that way I just am having a hard time understanding you is all...and I still dont see any of your solutions...or is just bringing awareness to it your solution?

We have talked about this before in other threads, but the problem is nobody wants to hear it.

the gun problem and social problem is a marriage. they go hand and hand together. we have talked about the gun culture before.

because unlike anything else, people feel bad ass when they hold a gun. that power the gun gives them, thats a real psychological thing that can't even be denied.

and you see it in our culture everyday. you see it in movies and tv shows. the "hero" is getting his ass whooped in a one on one fight against the villain. he reaches for the gun and shoots the bad guy.

you see it in real life. people wanna run their mouth, get their ass beat in a fist fight, then pull out a gun because they bit off more than they can chew. Hello george zimmerman.

so people can say what they want about GZ, the fact of the matter is that if he wasn't packing, most likely he doesn't even confront trayvon, because it was the gun that gave him the feeling of power, not his neighborhood watch thing or whatever.

why does that guy in florida feel the need to carry his gun when confronting a bunch of teen over loud music? he shot those kids who weren't doing a damn thing wrong except being kids.

this 11 year old kid. he didn't go get a bat, a knife, nothing. he went straight for a bb gun and a shot gun. he already knew which "tool" was gonna give him instance results.

i'm trying my hardest to stay pro 2nd amendment, but people in this country make it extremely difficult with some of their arguments.

the "defend ourselves against the government" argument is becoming funny to me. because we shoot each other at such a rate that whatever government planned on doing to us, we're already doing to ourselves.

the guns aren't being used to protect us from the government. they're being used to protect us from each other.

it's become way more than "defending your family". now we got guys wanting to walk around with their "rights" in walmart and chipotle. now they doing it in airports.

this right here is what pisses me off:

Over 7,000 children are hospitalized or killed due to gun violence every year, according to a new study published in the medical journal Pediatrics. An additional 3,000 children die from gun injuries before making it to the hospital, bringing the total number of injured or killed adolescents to 10,000 each year.

http://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/the-toll-gun-violence-children
http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/he...ticle-1.1592703

Every day, 48 children and teens are shot in murders, assaults, suicides & suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.

Every day, 7 children and teens die from gun violence:

5 are murdered
2 kill themselves.

http://www.bradycampaign.org/key-gun-violence-statistics

this is ok? if this is ok for you guys in the name of "Defending ourselves against the government" then we will never been cool in real life.

i always found it funny how people can be anti-abortion and pro 2nd amendment.

so you're ok with the babies being born, but don't give a damn once they're alive right?

cause these stats show that the pro-"life", pro 2nd amendment people don't give a flying crap about it. or there would've been something done about this already. the numbers have been here for decades.

it's ok that we live in "the greatest country on earth", yet our kids are 9 times more likely to be injured/killed from gun violence than any other developed nation?

that's ok? because we gotta defend ourselves against the jackboots, right?

let me make this clear on this board. i might distrust the government, but i distrust YALL even less. i might have minimum trust for the cops, but i don't have ANY trust for the pro 2nd amendment civilian population.

you, the parents, and you're gun slinging kids, are scary to me. that's the truth, be offended all you want, but thats the reality, and it won't change.

we have way too many irresponsible gun owners, and way too many hot heads allowed to own weapons in this country for me to just be ok with this.

and no, giving more people guns isn't the solution. that right there has to be the all time dumbest argumentive point i've ever heard in my life.

and parent's need to be more responsible?

i don't expect them to. not when we got grown adults shooting each other cause somebody smashed the wrong chick or dude.

not when we got grown adults shooting up movie theaters and clinics.

not when we got drunken idiots popping off rounds in the middle of the suburbs and gotta get the cops called.

not when we got parents accidentally shooting their own kids in the house because they thought it was a robber.

the numbers.....the blood shed....you can't just chalk this up to irresponsible parents anymore. this has gone way beyond that excuse. it just simply doesn't fly.

Vers, you wanna talk about social issues with guns?

that's fine. let's talk about how people care so much about guns and the invisible war against the government.

let's talk about how people don't even realize all the other rights are slowly being taken away from us, but we're too blinded to realize it because the only "right" people seem to foam at the mouth for is the 2nd amendment.

let's talk about how we as a society seem to be against abortion, but fine with the consequences of those same kids we're "protecting" being killed anyway.

let's talk about how we as a country like having the right to a gun, but nobody wants to fight for rights for healthcare, clean water, fair education.

let's talk about how we as americans fight for the right of destruction, but we don't actually fight for the right of life.

Let me know when your ready to ban cars. They kill way more kids than guns do and the numbers are not even close.

it is viable and we talk about it.

but what does that matter? my wife is german, of course she wants to move back. i'm american. but somehow i'm not allowed to try to make this place better?

yea i constantly compare, just like i constantly compared germany to america when i lived over there. just like i compared iraq and afghan to germany and the US when i deployed over there. just like i compare turkey to the US and Germany

you're SUPPOSE to compare. you're suppose to see what countries are doing something right, and learn from that. what they're doing wrong, and try to avoid that.

you're not making any sense. on top of that, Newsflash: America isn't the only developed nation on the planet. we aren't the only country people from all over the world try to move to.

people from all over the world also move to Norway, Australia, Germany, Japan, England is a big one.

oh, another newsflash :Americans also migrate OUT of the country on a regular.

so your migrate to america argument also doesn't work.

as far as solutions go, there's tons. but we've gone over and over and over this in hundreds of other threads.

so if you're still looking for solutions, that means you completely ignore the ones people already put out there.

One other point...the more I think about it...no stupid as hell. You have family over there...your wife is from over there so even more family for you...and you seem to like what they do better then the US does.

So actually I would think it is a logical solution to your worries/problems you have with this country. It wasnt like I asked someone about it who has no ties to the area what so ever.

So I guess I dont find it dickish or stupid as hell either....but you my friend are entitled to how you feel or think....you didnt like my solutions so how about sharing some of your own then??

I understand I think...I was not trying to knock you in anyway...I like you man...just trying to understand is all...and with the problems I have I lose context through writing instead of face to face.

Matter of fact this convo would sound a whole lot different if it was in person..

Yeah I was one of those people so its not a news flash for me Swish.

There are a hell of a lot of people wanting and do come here so while that argument doesnt work for you it does for a ton of others.

i'd like to somebody be anti-abortion. but 1: im not a woman and 2: there's a ton of factors that need to change in order for be to go that route.

and the cars argument has been destroyed.

it's a logical fallacy. cars main purpose isn't to kill somebody. a car's specific purpose is to get the driver from point a to point B.

a gun's specific purpose, it's sole reason for being in existence in the first place, is to kill/neutralize a target.

just stop it bro. jeez.. drug OD's, and now cars? that has zero to do with gun culture and gun deaths in a gun thread.

This is just sad. I'm not a gun guy, don't own any. So I'll ask you gun owners out there, don't you lock up your guns to keep them out of the hands of children?

I get that maybe you wanna teach your child about guns. Perhaps if my dad had done that, I would own a few. Dunno, Probably not. But still, don't you, as a parent need to be responsible and keep guns out of the hands of unsupervised kids?

Just wondering if you feel as I do on that.

I wont speak for anyone else...my sons never had access when they was young...who is saying they should have them unsupervised?? did I miss that?

Though later on like IDK when they was 17 or so I would give them a key to their cabinet of guns to go hunt or get ready to go to the range.

What worked for me may not work for others. My youngest was a complete dolt...but the one thing I will give him credit for is he was very responsible when it came to firearms...and I think part of that was due to me having them around and learning about guns at a very young age.

yea but you didn't leave the unlock, letting your kid go pop another kid over some puppies.

but that's the thing man, we aren't talking about you and your kids.

we're talking about the thousands of irresponsible gun owners and the thousands of kids getting capped. that's the problem that needs to be addressed.

you know how people on this board have said they wish the non violent muslims would speak out against the terrorist?

i wish the "responsible" gun owners would practice what they preach. go out and protest and condemn these idiot gun owners.

cause i ain't seeing it. not on a national level.

My sons have been out for years but our grandchildren are going to be spending the summers with us...aqnd the guns will be locked up then to...my current home has a security room and it doubles as my gun room and if it isnt on my side or night stand they are locked away..and its always been that way.

Our new house we just bought has the same kind of deal...a locked off security room and thats where my stuff will be...I wouldnt live with myself if a child died due to my negligence...so I tried to use common sense and not much happen.

Though I did shoot a whole right through my bed and floor and the bullet was sitting on my toolbox in the garage...I started a new med and well....my wife asked me to keep the guns up till I got adjusted..one of the couple times I listened...but there was no kids in the house when that happened.

When I was involved in the gun community I did this very thing...and know a ton of people who do this also...just because youre not seeing it doesnt mean its not happening.

I was involved in a ton of youth training programs...I got out when stuff started to be more political then trying to educate te youth on firearms.

Vers, you wanna talk about social issues with guns?

What? That is NOT what I am saying.

I am saying that everyone on here always debates gun control every time there is a violent tragedy in our country.

One side is pro gun.

The other side is anti-gun.

I am saying for once can you guys take guns out of the equation and examine the social problems that this country is facing, especially in regards to our youth?

I have my thoughts no gun control. However, I think the problems that our society are facing run MUCH deeper than guns. I am NOT sure how that point is not being conveyed????????

LOL Well for just how many Americans buy guns for the purpose of Killing somebody? notallthere They buy them to Hunt, target shoot, collect, protect themselves and family members. They don't buy them with murdering people in mind. Just like people buying cars don't buy them with the idea of killing anybody with them. It's the reckless, stupid, lazy way both are used that leads to loss of life, and cars lead to way more loss of lives than guns. Yet people want to cry about guns. It's like worrying about stopping the bleeding from nicking yourself shaving while you ignore the blood pouring out of your sliced coratid artery.

Well, nobody said anything about unsupervised, but I have doubts that the parents of the 11 year old boy were standing there watching as he shot the little girl, so, yeah, I'd say the kid was unsupervised. Wouldn't you?

It was also a story about one child harming another.

I am not saying that gun control should not be discussed. I am saying that there are other issues in our country. This story was about a child not respecting the life of another child. A recent story was about gang rape. Another story was about mass murder out west. Another was about school children being shot. I could go on and on............but, it seems that all people wanna talk about is the gun angle.

I think gun control should be discussed, but don't we already know who is going to say what on these threads? LOL

My point is that there are other issues at work. I tried bringing up my experience working in the schools and the mind-set of some of our young people, but no one wants to discuss the factors that are making so many of these children dangerous to society.

As they get older, their crimes become more serious. I think it would be wise to address why there are so many problem children in our schools and society. I think it would be wise to reevaluate how to properly educate them, not only academically, but also morally. I think it would be wise to focus on the societal problems that are the driving force behind so many horrific crimes.

Look...........I am not trying to stifle talk about gun control. It's an important conversation, but no one wants to talk about the much deeper societal problems that we have and I don't think too many people really have a good feel for how many young people are extremely troubled and capable of the violence.

Power, as Swish described it, was something I never felt by possessing a firearm. Respect of the power of the firearm is what I felt and was taught to feel. By the age of 14 I was allowed to come home from school, grab a shotgun and go hunting on my own. That was after two years of supervised training and hunting with my dad.

My guns were always locked in a safe or gun case. I highly doubt than any gun owner on this board doesn't have safety checks to safe guard their guns. I'm not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that anything else was even mentioned in any of the gun threads posted on this board.

I have never felt that guns or for that matter, carrying a gun, gave me power. It is not a power or penis thang, it is an equalizer.

Being older and getting older everyday, I can no longer fight the bad guy to protect me and mine but when I carry I am equal to his strength and agility. I now have a fighting chance.

Just not one to be a victim if I can help it.

JC. From the sound of some of you guys it sounds like you live on the lawless frontier because you have to pack your iron because the Clanton gang is gonna jump you down at the depot 😂. Unless you live in Syria I doubt this is the case . I've lived in some pretty sketchy places , visited even worse and never carried so I think I'm safe at the local Walmart . I like guns but the crazy arguments people use to justify themselves are crazy .

You apparently don't get out much. Come see a nighttime Caps or Flyers game with me sometime. Stop for gas in NW DC or get a drink at the 7-11. People die just doing those things. Hundreds of killings per year, even more head busting assaults. Gangs of teens will chase you down the street, sucker punch you to the ground and punt your face till you do that frozen happy dance with your arms.
Only has to happen to you once.

I could just stay home and be safe or I could carry the equalizer and enjoy life, wisely.
