The notion that Browns center Alex Mack has a clause in his contract preventing the team from placing the franchise or transition tag on him is untrue, according to Joel Corry of CBS Sports. Corry notes (via Twitter) that Mack does have a no-trade clause, though. The 30-year-old is expected to opt out of his current deal in the coming weeks and become a free agent.

Any penalties or fallout if he misses the deadline 3-1? Just an odd situation if he can get tagged and opt out as well after the fact.

That is what I recall. There is no specific clause in his contract that says he cannot be tagged. However, his deadline to opt out is after the deadline to tag someone. Therefore, he cannot be tagged.

Add in the fact that he cannot be tagged because he is under contract,and will be until he opts out,which as you say is after the deadline to tag a player.
You have to hand it his agent,or maybe it might be more appropriate to wonder about the person with the browns who agreed to such a seemingly unbalanced deal.

Tagging Mack with the transition tag instead of the franchise tag, to save a few million dollars, was always a dumb move. Farmer is going to be haunting us from the grave the same way Mangini did.

I'm guessing the starting point will be 5 years $50 mil.
Mack is 30 btw.
Probably at least $20 mil of that will be guaranteed.
If they front load a lot of that guaranteed money, it's still doable.
Whatever Mack gets, Schwartz is going to want more being a tackle.
JT's cap number the next couple of years is $10 mil in case anyone is wondering.

Perhaps, but Schwartz is not as good of a player as Mack. Not even close. But his position currently holds more value in the NFL. I hope we get them both locked up. Having a great pass blocking offensive line would be tremendous if we have a young QB.

Here is a list of the salaries of centers in the NFL: http://overthecap.com/position/center/Notice, of the top paid centers, Mack is the only one hitting the market this year. This leads me to believe he will be at the top of this list when the 2016 season starts. That means he will average at least $9 million a year.

If i'm understanding the situation correctly, the Jaguars made this contract. The Browns could only accept it as is or let him walk.The mistake was using the wrong tag and letting someone else draw up the contract.
