The notion that Browns center Alex Mack has a clause in his contract preventing the team from placing the franchise or transition tag on him is untrue, according to Joel Corry of CBS Sports. Corry notes (via Twitter) that Mack does have a no-trade clause, though. The 30-year-old is expected to opt out of his current deal in the coming weeks and become a free agent.

While that may be true, Mack has until March 5th to opt out, and the franchise tag deadline is March 1st.

So if we franchise him March 1st, can he still opt out on the 5th? I'm not sure how this works.

Section 1. Franchise Player Designations: Except as set forth in Section 9 below, each Club shall be permitted to designate one of its players who would otherwise be an Unrestricted Free Agent as a Franchise Player each season during the term of this Agreement. The player so designated may be one who would otherwise be a Restricted Free Agent.

I thought that part of his contract stipulated that he cannot be tagged.

Ah. That makes sense. While he doesn't have a clause in his contract saying he can't be tagged, he will just opt out after the franchise tag deadline.

We wouldn't be able to franchise him because he would still be under contract.

Any penalties or fallout if he misses the deadline 3-1? Just an odd situation if he can get tagged and opt out as well after the fact.

There is no specific clause in his contract that says he cannot be tagged. However, his deadline to opt out is after the deadline to tag someone. Therefore, he cannot be tagged.

Add in the fact that he cannot be tagged because he is under contract, and will be until he opts out, which as you say is after the deadline to tag a player.
You have to hand it his agent,or maybe it might be more appropriate to wonder about the person with the browns who agreed to such a seemingly unbalanced deal.

Tagging Mack with the transition tag instead of the franchise tag, to save a few million dollars, was always a dumb move.

I'm guessing the starting point will be 5 years $50 mil.

Mack is 30 btw.

Probably at least $20 mil of that will be guaranteed.

If they front load a lot of that guaranteed money, it's still doable.

Whatever Mack gets, Schwartz is going to want more being a tackle.

JT's cap number the next couple of years is $10 mil in case anyone is wondering.

unless it's keeping us from signing Von Miller, Damon Harrison, or MoWilk, I don't care. (to Dep's point about overall financial investment on OL.)

I think 10 a year is reasonable for Mack. I'm not sure about signing Schwartz for that much though.

Not even close. But his position currently holds more value in the NFL.

I hope we get them both locked up. Having a great pass blocking offensive line would be tremendous if we have a young QB.

Here is a list of the salaries of centers in the NFL:

http://overthecap.com/position/center/

Notice, of the top paid centers, Mack is the only one hitting the market this year. This leads me to believe he will be at the top of this list when the 2016 season starts. That means he will average at least $9 million a year.

Pretty greedy to get front loaded with all that guaranteed money, opt out and get resigned for even more money. If this the freaking NBA?

Pretty greedy or pretty smart?

Players should be trying to get as much money as they can during their short careers.

If i'm understanding the situation correctly, the Jaguars made this contract. The Browns could only accept it as is or let him walk. The mistake was using the wrong tag and letting someone else draw up the contract.

I wonder what the driving force is.

Significantly more than 8 mil a year?
Just wanting another signing bonus?
Wanting to go somewhere else?

I think it can be only two of the 3.

Getting as much money guaranteed as possible. That's the motivator.

Nice. I chuckled and I don't think he's even all that bad.

Same stuff was said about Schwartz.. He eventually turned it around. I expect Erving to do the same.

Right. But the whole reason we picked Erving was because we thought Mack was going to leave. This makes the Erving pick look even worse.

Also, wasn't Schwartz pretty good his rookie year? Then he had a drop off in year two and three.
