Edwards present, hard at work
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
05.29.2007
Braylon Edwards: Present, accounted for, and anxious to make headlines for what he does on the field, not what he does or says off of it.

Edwards wouldrather not start that process by playing with the backups, as he did during the Browns' OTA practice Tuesday, but it is a start. And he, like the rest of the players trying to learn the Browns' new offensive system, will go from here.

Edwards was in the news two weeks ago for his million-dollar scholarship pledge to Cleveland Public Schools, after which he pledged to be a better player, teammate and person in 2007.

But when he missed the Browns' first OTA practice last week, plenty of people were left wondering if he'd meant what he said.

Edwards spoke Tuesday for the first time since his public presentation of the scholarship money. He said he missed last Tuesday due to a family emergency, hasn't missed a day since and has high expectations for the Browns' new offense this fall.

"I think we can have something this year," Edwards said. "I think all the guys have positive attitudes. The coaches here are good ones. This could be a good year for us."

Though Browns coach Romeo Crennel said there's "no significance to" Edwards playing with the backups Tuesday, it was certainly noticeable.

"He's trying to learn the system," Crennel said. "He did miss a day, so he's just a bit behind. He worked with the third team, and he worked with the second team."

"Today is May 29," Edwards said. "At the end of the day, when I'm starting in September, that's what matters. Right now guys are getting reps, and whether you're on the field or watching, it's about taking that mental rep and learning."

The next step, then, is to continue working forward.

"I'm putting the first day behind us -- it's over with," Crennel said. "He's been here everyday since. He's been working good."

On one play during a 7-on-7 drill Tuesday, Edwards beat Therrian Fontenot on a square-in route, caught a pass from Ken Dorsey and turned up the sideline with long, powerful strides, drawing away from the defense before any other defender could offer help.

The Browns hope it was a glimpse of what Edwards can bring to Rob Chudzinski's new offense.

"Like everything else, there are bumps and bruises, some things I definitely messed up on today," Edwards said. "But I like the offense. I think we're going to create some mismatches this year. It allows everybody to move around. We're going to be unpredictable this year.

"If we can continue to make the progress we're making, the strides we made, this offense can be something special."

Edwards said he's "a little bit" bigger and much more confident than he was a year ago, when he was trying to come back from a torn ACL. He said he's not thinking about the knee or much of anything from a difficult 2006.

"I just want to win," he said. "I don't have to talk about it."

Then shut up, show up to practice, practice hard and then this fall WHEN you finaly start playing up to your 3rd overall draft status, thats when what you say will mean more to me as a fan. Not to say that coming back last year and playing like he did was a bad year its just I would rather hear more about what he does on the field than off.

Interesting. Had a buddy who was entertaining some clients at the Cavs-Pistons playoff game the night before and guess who was a "face in the crowd" on the big screen?

what does that have to do with an emergency? A month ago my friend collapsed and died right in the middle of a game... until then we were going about our normal plans.

Hey D,how does a reciever run a square-in,then turn up the side line?
Just figured I'd get my over-analysis in before this thread turns out like all the other BE threads.

Exactly. He missed that days practice because he was out late in Detroit watching the Pistons game, and probably chose to rest up and travel to Cleveland the next day, while his teammates were already practicing. There was no emergency.

So we are now at the point where we can't accept anything he says, so we're just gonna go ahead and make crap up? You are ridiculous.

Yeah, that's it. He just makes up family emergencies like they're nothing so he can sleep in after that exhausting 1 hour first-class plane flight from Detroit to Cleveland.

Instead of assuming he's lazy and a liar, wouldn't it make more sense that he's telling the truth about his family emergency and the reason that he hasn't come out to the media to tell-all is because the situation is difficult or embarassing to his family, and he doesn't want it to be all over the news? If Braylon missed the first day because he was out partying, I think Romeo be incredibly upset over it. The fact that he doesn't have issues with Braylon missing a day, yet is being secretive as well of the reason given should tell you that the emergency is something the organization doesn't want revealed.

Gotta love Cleveland fans throwing him under the bus for something they know absolutely nothing about.

As long as he is at practice I am fine.

But I have to admitt, this:

Quote:

"I think we can have something this year," Edwards said. "I think all the guys have positive attitudes. The coaches here are good ones. This could be a good year for us."

Is what he should have been sayign the whole time.

speaking of browns being at cavs games, did anyone else see Joe T and Brady sitting beside each other at the game last night? i like it, the QB and LT should always be best friends. at least i hope so, because otherwise the left tackle stinks.

Yeah, I saw that. Nice!! I wonder how many Detroit fans groaned when they saw Joe Thomas, New Franchise Left Tackle for the Cleveland Browns, rooting on the Cleveland Cavaliers with new Franchise QB Brady Quinn. Sure, they got Calvin Johnson, but I know a lot of Lions fans who were salivating at the thought of having JT on their offensive line. Sorry chumps!

Most educated fans I knew thought JT was the best choice for the TEAM.

Calvin is the best choice for Matt Millen.

Hit that one right on the head Turk. So many seem to hate the guy. Sure he's making a large salary but he's definitely our best wide reciever and better for this team than worse. His play wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, and he's done some bad things as well as good things.

I like Braylon and hope he does well. He's certainly better than Troy Williamson of the Vikings. LoL, same with Mike Williams. Edwards might have been a 3rd pick and not showing for it at all yet, but he did put up a decent year last year with more touchdowns and yards than most wide recievers

If he becomes good, I hope people stop ripping him apart

No, but I drove by the Lions practice facility this morning, and everyone was outside for their OTA's. I can reliably report that the big cloud of Stupid is still hanging over Allen Park!

Okay already... Braylon might be on the list for some of you but the bashing needs to stop. I am no BE pimp but the kid has GOD given talent. He is and will be one of the better players on this team for a long time to come.

Some of you need to remember that these YOUNG players are still kids. They are extremely well paid, yes. They get a ton of coverage in the media, yes. BUT they are kids nonetheless and Kids screw up, make mistakes and do stupid things.

So what he ran his mouth on the sideline last year... I cussed up a storm at the team that day. So what he went to Columbus to see the buckeyes game (and that other team), I wanted to watch it too... If I hadn't I would not of known he was there. I don't think there is a clause in his contract that says he can't enjoy his days off.

The most childish, stupid and irrelevant thing about the BE controversy is that there even is one... especially on a board that is supposed to be part of the most devoted Fan Base in the NFL. Shame on all of you.
