If he was willing to accept that type of money, then he'd already be back with the Jets.

McCown is not going to be on the team.

I agree.

McCown will be traded to the highest bidder. Could we keep him into training camp? Sure, we could. However, I suspect that we'll get an offer we cannot refuse between now and then.

We won't trade him for nothing...that is for sure. A team like the Jets who lets say Ryan Fitz signs somewhere else. What do you think they would trade for their starter and we only trade him for a deal we can't refuse.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the two-year deal is worth $15 million, with $6.75 million guaranteed. According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports, the contract has $7 million in incentives, and $22 million is the maximum amount Griffin will be able to earn over the two years.

Back-up money with big incentives.

Looks like a risk-less contract to me and we can easily cut him after a year if it doesn't work out.

I don't see any team giving up much, if anything for a 37 year old QB who will turn 38 during the season. A 7th rounder would be a gift.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

We have to remember this is a QB starved league and McCown brings experience ...

it's not starved of 38 year old career backups.

You didn't ask me, but I was a huge, huge RG3 pimp. I was really ticked off when we didn't pull the trigger and get him.

As it turned out, it might have been a wash either way.

We would have given up 3 1's and a 2.

Those players would have been:

Richardson (and by extension, the #1 that became Manziel)
Weeden
Schwartz
Mingo

Maybe we would have had a #1 convey to another year further, and in that case we would give up Gilbert instead of the #22 that became Weeden .... and maybe we would have drafted a player with impact in that spot. We couldn't have done any worse with RG3 and a player to be drafted at 22 in 2012.

McCown isn't going anywhere. RGIII is no guarantee to even beat him out. Between the two of these guys they need to eat A LOT of snaps so whoever the Browns draft can sit and learn.

The Browns need A LOT of talent everywhere. Not taking BPA would really be a bad move IMO.

that's a good point.

i forgot that we pretty much picked all bums from those picks, and might as well have drafted RG3 anyway. good stuff bro.

Dallas is still pondering manziel, probably.

teams would love an experienced back up. but the Jet's are looking for a backup, they want a starter.

McCown, RG3 and any rookie we might draft will all be in the same situation. Learning a brand new offense. Who starts will likely come down to who learns our offense fastest.

In Washington RG3 was a petulant child. He couldn't get on with two seperate coaching staffs. Not sure he's the best role model for a rookie.....

Well, if he doesn't figure in to Hue Jacksons plans, then getting a 7th would be just dandy!

All the uses of the word "special" makes me think of a room full of Special Ed from Crank Yankers.

I truly hoped and had all fingers crossed that the event why this thread was created, wouldn't have happened.

RGIII isn't going to resurrect his career anywhere, let alone at THE graveyard of qbs known as Cleveland. He seriously must not have had ANY interest elsewhere.

Obviously, don't approve of the signing. We didn't get better, in any forms, in any aspects with this move.

At least everyone will be screaming for RG3 to start week 1 rather than the rookie. That's just as stupid, but it at least keeps the rookie healthy and away from developing all the bad habits RG3 already has and needs to fix.

I'm not a fan of signing him either, especially if we let McCown go, but at least it breaks the fan stupidity cycle of forcing in the rookie before he is ready.

Let them get all stupid about RG3. It's not like we are going to break anything that isn't already broken.

Steve Young on the RG3 signing "Well to be honest Cleveland is a place QB's go to die" That might sting if it wasn't so absolutely accurate.

For RG3 to resurrect his career he will have to make football his only priority. 24/7/364 He gets Christmas off. That means being in the facility before Hue gets there and leaving after Hue is gone for the day.... It means putting his own crap aside and learning an actual NFL offense.

IMO he hasn't shown the willingness to DO that up to this point. So we shall see what becomes of this experiment. He can't blame the staff this time. He will have every oppurtunity to learn and develop his QB skills. If he doesn't, it's on him.....

I think this decreases the likelihood of us drafting Goff, not sure about Wentz. I don't think you get RG3 without planning for at least a little read-option and playaction rollouts in your plan for the offense. I could see implementing an offense with RG3 and then having Wentz or maybe Lynch take over the same system.

I'm down with the move. I'd keep McCown, too.

Nothing changes in Cleveland...go cheap on resigning their own free agents but willing to dump a ton on some other teams leftovers.

"We are not going to go out and spend a gazillion dollars in free agency," Haslam said that night in the bowels of FirstEnergy Stadium. "We are going to build through the draft because we are firmly convinced that is the right way to do it."

Well, maybe now the Browns will draft RG a RT, maybe Tunsil. If the Browns don't draft RG some Oline help, it will be a matter of time before he ends up on IR.

I look for the Browns to try to trade down to gain more draft picks now that they have a starting QB.

That's backup money for a guy who can't read defenses. He can succeed in a simplified offense which I think Hue can provide for him. I still think they draft a QB at 2 or 32.

At worst he is a spot starter, at best he plays well and keeps a rookie out until they are ready.

You think these guys are going to change the way they run an offense to add the read option crap that got RG3 hurt in the first place? RG3 has a bad wheel. You want to see him out for the season try running that read option crap. Why the hell would such an experienced staff change what they do for RG3? He's just going to have to learn how to play in a real NFL offense. One that's been successful for at least 5 decades.

I agree that nothing changes with that dead horse you keep beating but...

If there is one thing we are not doing with this contract it is throwing big money at an FA.

He has only $6.5 mil guaranteed over 2 years. Case Keenum is making more money than him and has only started 2 games.

You don't like the front office.

We get it.

We really do.

Could you please just move on already.

j/c:

A lot of people are stating opinions and speculations as facts. I wish y'all wouldn't do that. Early on page one, I see that the Browns are still drafting a qb at number 2. I read every freaking post in this thread and there is not a shred of proof for those claims. Man!!!

To the signing:

I kinda like it. It's a relatively low risk move that could reap huge dividends. The odds aren't great, but the Browns did not have to give up a draft choice and the money isn't bad.

I have no idea what the Browns will do regarding the qbs moving forward, but here is what I would do:

--Keep McCown.

--Do not draft a qb at number 2.

--Trade down a bit and try to acquire a few impact players. Edge rusher, corner or FS, and WR.

--If we stay at 2, I would take either Ramsey or Bosa. If we trade down, I would target Hargreaves, Spence, and either Treadwell, Doctson, or Coleman.

--Take Cardale later in the draft.

--Don't force RGIII into the line-up. That is why I would keep McCown. His inability to read defenses has been a huge detriment. I would have a legit qb competition between the two while grooming Cardale in the wings.

No facts. Just opinions.

Hue ran read option stuff with Andy Dalton. He wouldn't be changing anything, but maybe shifting focus.

Bengals Offense Article Oct. 2015

RG3 has had a bad wheel. Supposedly he looked great at the workout for the Browns. Maybe he's finally healthy again. Modern Medicine is pretty wild.
