Could Hue be an upgrade from Pettine? Could that lead to more wins?

Grimm...Yes, Hue could be an upgrade...

I believe having a HC who is from the offensive side definitely helps to put a better offensive team on the field once the rebuilding is complete.

The biggest advantage I see with Hue is the level of experience in his coaching staff tells me he is well established in the NFL and is respected.

The Browns did not diddle around and go into a long drawn out affair in selecting the HC this time. That allowed Hue to be one of the first to hire his coaching staff, allowing him to get the best coaching talent and not forced to take left overs like our HCs in the past.

Yes, Hue as HC could lead to more wins...

IMO, Hue was the cream of the crop outta the head coaching selections, and we wrapped up a deal early and quickly with him.

If there's anyone who can help us establish a Qb we can be proud of, Hue is him. As stated by Mac, we don't have morons on this staff such as Jim O'Neil. He put together a respected staff. Staff that wants to play for Hue.

We'll see, as always.

LB...many believed that Adam Gase was the best coaching prospect but Hue has about twice the coaching experience of Gase. I believe Hue, based on his ability to put a darn good coaching staff together, is a better HC selection for the Browns.

What turned out to be huge for the Browns was Hue getting Ray Horton as his DC. I view Ray Horton as a potential HC candidate in the next few years. If he is able to turn the Browns defense around it would be a notable accomplishment.

Again, I'm going to have to agree with everything. In addition, if you listened to Hortons presser, when asked why he left friends and passed on other opportunities, aside from wanting to play for Hue, the man expressed love for this city. Outside of being a credible and respected coordinator, you have one passionate about the city and the everyday Joe Smoes within it? It's a win win in my book.

Maybe archive it for the end of 2018 season (3 years)...the opportunity of parity is there in the NFL if there is an unbalance of parity with this team, I know you were joking but also probably a little serious. That won't get undone within one season.

No, not making excuses...just hope you will give the change a little more than one season to make up for the years of blunders.

Hahaha, I agree. Now that he said that, you know it's going to happen. Just like how, when I saw the thread about Joe Thomas saying he'll never get traded, I was expecting a link about a draft day trade which had him packing.

This could be prophetic Version ... The last sentence that got cut off could be very true ...

The WRONG approach .... I agree with Sash 100% in that statement ...

Problem for me is ,.... The MONEYBALL approach will be added to the scrap heap of WRONG APPROACHES!!!!

In our cap condition combined with the fact we have NO YOUNG PLAYERS WE need to invest in it made NO SENSE on any level to let Gipson and Schwartz walk ... NONE ... We're going to end up with a TON OF CAP SPACE when the fiscal year is over and we could have EASILY LOADED THERE CONTRACTS up front so we have the option of having them on the cheap ... MAKES NO SENSE ...

And how the hell are we ever going to win if we don't keep our GOOD YOUNG TALENT AROUND???? ...

If we had a money reason not to sign them I would be 100% on board ... But looking at the ENTIRE PICTURE just makes me SCARED AS HELL about what the MONEYBALLERS are doing ...

Most on this board can bury there head in the sand and pretend this is a REVOLUTIONARY NEW IDEA that will transform football like it did baseball instead of look at it for what it really is ... A DESPERATE MOVE BY AN OWNER IN WAY OVER HIS HEAD!!!!

I get it ... We all need hope ... Reality has no place in today's society!!!

From our previous discussions about the def I would really like to land one of the top CBs.

If I had to put my finger on 'the' biggest reason for the drop in quality of the defense I would pick the injury/decline of Joe Haden. And imo he's a big enough question to wonder whether or not he'll ever be that player again.

But, after Ramsey goes I wonder if its too much of a reach to take Hargreaves at 8?

I'm a BPA advocate so I would only consider that if Bosa is gone. I'm in quandary if Buckner is available because I have him rated higher and positional value would also dictate his selection over Hargreaves.

BUT this draft is thin at top level CB and deep at DL (although) not necessarily deep at DL that can provide interior pressure.

But judging this team specifically top level CB play was imho a difference maker in 2014 defense.

What do you think of Hargreaves at 8? If Bosa, Zeke are gone?

I just PMed a guy who was asking me who I would take at 8. I said some think he isn't worth that high of a pick, but I think he falls right in that range. I think I had him at 9, but man, he is a very good player and like you said, it is a position of need. [ooops, talking about Hargreaves here.]

I really think we need impact players at:

--pass rusher [hate using that generic term]

--WR

--CB

If a guy like Bosa, Ramsey [pipe dream], or Hargreaves is available, you gotta take him. If not, trade down just a bit and get someone like one of the top 3 WRs, Spence, or Nkemdiche.

I am not as high on Buckner as you and others. I know you do your research. Can you tell me why you have him rated so highly?

Yup, I added Hargreaves to my board.

If they find a trade down partner I hope its not too far.
I would still like a shot at Sheldon Rankins or top CB.
I'm not as high wink on Spence and Nkemdiche as you. I didn't watch too much film of Nkemdiche I have to admit I wrote him off learning about his incident.

I think Spence is good, but I just think Ogbah is a better all around prospect. Clean off the field, bigger, faster more productive.

Quickness, productivity (hurries, sacks, batted passes), fluidity, hand use, versatility 5-tech and 3-tech or even DE in a 4 man line. Interior pressure is key for any defense and if his skillset carries over it will make it easier for the edge rushers to his L/R to get to the QB.

I have to say that sometimes on D, it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

A good to great pass rush makes your secondary look better. A great secondary makes the front seven better at least when it comes to stats.

While I understand that opinions can vary greatly, I would covet a great pass rusher over a great CB if push comes to shove. I do believe that a player like Ramsey throws a variable into that mix. But I see him as the exception to the rule rather than the rule itself.

I know what he said...I'm not a complete idiot. I was going off of your response that after one season we should review and whatever the new regime. Again I stated you were mostly joking but just saying for the little bit that was serious and I'm sure the result expected would be close to 3-13 or else why archive it. I hope we would give it more than a season.

In my wildest dreams I don't expect 3-13 of course. Then again that was my feelings last year. Owe BTTB a round of golf due to not bettering 4 wins...thought I had a lock.

Some possible starter projections for nickel/passing down:

DEF:
FS--Rahim Moore for Poyer

IDL--Carl Nassib for Shelton

OFF:
RT--pencil Shon Coleman

I'm interested to see who lines up as the other DE next to Shelton. Hughes? Cooper?

If Xavier Cooper isn't on the field in nickel, there's no reason to keep him on the team.

Completely agree. I actually don't have much high hopes for Cooper. All he had really going for him was that explosive burst, but what snaps he got last year - didn't seem to do much for him.

Well, I kinda throw away most things related to how our players were used last year on defense. It was a mess.

I'm just spit ballin here.

Do you think Cooper can play 3-tech in 4 man line on nickel?

What do you think the nickel 4-man DL will be?

I projected Nassib into the line-up with Bryant because I can't imagine Shelton and Bryant produce enough pressure for them both to be in nickel package.

I'm not too sure but I lean towards Hughes, possibly Cooper passing downs/ nickel as clevesteve mentioned.

I'm no guru but I feel Horton liked to use DEs that have pass rush ability on both sides of his NT. I think that is the reason why he chose Taylor over Rubin as the DE in his first go around here instead of NT. In Arizona, I feel like he had that approach as well, but I could be wrong. Tennessee I don't know.

His attacking D seems to lean towards Cooper over Hughes, but I'm sure they're be a healthy rotation as always.

Right now, achieving some NFL parity here is a great idea. Ready for it. Hope some of these guys can get it done.

AS HC, Hue doesn't need to do it all. Needs to make sure it gets done, but he doesn't need to do it all individually. Great staff, proven coaches, he needs to be a difference maker in games when possible and fashion a successful group approach for the team.
I think it can happen. Hope we start early and continue well. Lot of youth to coach up.
Already enjoying more football, less sideshow this offseason. Honeymoon for now, but it feels better today IMHO.

When the season opens, this team could be younger than our expansion team.

We have numerous older guys I think could be in danger of being gone when the season opens.

I am going to give the odds of these older veterans being on the team when the season opens. These are my official post draft chances for each of our "veteran veterans".

John Greco: 55% He is an older player, but he could be the veteran between 2 really young players at C and RT. However, we also have Bailey, and he could bump Greco off the team.

Josh McCown: 5% I never say never, but I can't see too many scenarios where McCown is on the team come week 1 of this season. I think that he is injury protection right now, and nothing more. He will not be here when the season opens unless someone is hurt in the preseason.

Gary Barnidge: 85% It's really poor form to trade a guy who just signed an extension with you while proclaiming his love for the team and city, and coming off a horrible season for the team, before he plays a single snap under his new deal. The only way I see it happening is if Barnidge approves of a trade.

Desmond Bryant: 70% Maybe this is a little high, but he has been our best DE since signing here. However, we have loaded up on the DL, and I think that we want to get a lot younger here. It's a toss up for me at this point.

Brian Hartline: 70% I think that he will be the veteran in the WR room. He's also a big bodies WR, something that cannot be overlooked.

Andrew Hawkins: 30% I love Hawkins, He plays without a ounce of regard for his own body, and makes all of the catches. However, he is 30, and is only 5'7" on a good day, and we drafted 4 WR who have a variety of skill sets. I think that Hawkins will be on his way out fairly early in the process, unless they decide to keep him over Hartline, which seems unlikely to me.

Paul Kruger: 50% Yeah, we drafted a bunch of edge rushers, but you can never have too many pass rushers. This depends on if Kruger can recapture his explosive form of 2 years ago. We should know fairly early if he is going to be here or not. I don't see his fate dragging out to the end of the preseason.

Andy Lee: 35% Yeah, he's an excellent Punter. However, he will also be 34 when the season opens, and there could be conditional draft pick considerations if he stays. I have seen that he will cost us either a 6th or a 7th round pick, based on conditions. I cannot see us keeping a 34 year old Punter if doing so will devalue a pick next year.

Marlon Moore: 5% He'll be 29 when the season opens, and he is strictly a special teams only guy. We drafted a ton of players who can help on special teams immediately, and I cannot see Moore being on the roster even to the final cuts.

Joe Thomas: 90% I think that the backlash created by trading him would be too severe, unless we were to get an absolutely obscene value in return. Also, we will have at least 2 really young players on the OL, and maybe 3 if Greco is cut loose. Thomas has always been willing to work his butt off, and has always been willing to help younger players. I think that he remains on the team, even though the analytics say that we should grab the highest offer for him at this point.

Tramon Williams: 20% I cannot see him making the team if Haden recovers in time to open the season. That 25% is what I see as the odds of Haden being unable to open the season, ready to go. Haden is, however, expected to resume football activities in July. I think that he will be ready to go week 1.

Joe Haden: 80% I think that he is here if he is healthy.

That is, I believe, every player on this team who is either a 7 year or more veteran, or 30+ years old. This is going to be a very, very young team when all is said and done.

A vintage Diam post.

GC. Where to put this, why not " the team right now".

... deceiphering between dawglb, devil dawg, or another dawg.
I know everybody says "Defense Always Wins Games." and that's been there, but I'm not sure it was always there, not sure it was the start.

Thinking back, one question , one answer, some reporter, I only saw it refreshed not originally. Who would have thought one answer would change the teams identity. To me it's always just The Browns, (mostly) but I wonder how many know, I'm pretty sure it was Frank Minifield, could have been his counterpart, Dixon, but I'm pretty sure it was the first one.

Does anybody remember the story, it was some year in the 1980's and the playoffs probably, and he was asked about the defense, and one answer.

The gist of his answer was something like (that defense when you get it backed up is kind of like a dog when it's backed into a corner).

And that was the Start! That was the start of DAWG or anything having to do with The Browns and dogs as an identifier.

correct my memory maybe if I have it wrong.

Amazing what one answer can do.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I worked as an usher in the old Municipal Stadium, mostly for Indians games. One game with the Detroit Tigers was rained out, but there was a long period between the game being delayed and the umpires officially calling the game. On that day, I was assigned to the bleachers. I was standing there in my raincoat trying not to get too wet when a group of 4 or 5 Tigers, led by their shortstop Alan Trammell, come up my ramp. They were curious to see the Dawgpound and were full of questions about what it was like during Browns games.
