Jackson Jeffcoat AP

The Browns were awarded defensive end/outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat via waivers from the Redskins on Friday.

Jeffcoat played in nine games over two seasons for the Redskins and alternated between the practice squad and active roster as a rookie in 2014. He had an interception and a sack in three games as a rookie and a forced fumble in six games last season.

He was placed on injured reserve last November and waived earlier this week.

Jeffcoat, 24, was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Ted Hendricks Award winner in 2013 at Texas. He signed with the Seahawks after going undrafted and was cut in training camp.

Jeffcoat is the son of former Cowboys defensive end Jim Jeffcoat.

I have no clue who this guy is but let's inject the "other team's garbage" banner as if we're committed to him for the next three years. .

The Panthers announced they removed the franchise tag from CB Josh Norman. He's now an unrestricted free agent and on the open market.

We aren't going to be committing $30 million a year to cornerbacks.

0% chance we sign him.

Why not? Frontload the contract now while we've got the cap room.

He is 28, so probably not, though.

They want to be able to carry the cap over to the next year. Front loading does nothing to help them with that.

If we were going to be good this year, I'd be all over Norman. We are going to be the opposite of good.

Josh Norman is a zone corner, isn't he? Didn't we play mainly man under Horton last time around? How is he a fit?

Plus, I kind of worry about throwing huge dollars at a guy who has basically had one great year, and some very average years. Of his 4 years in the NFL, the Panthers had their best defense in 2013, when he played only 7 games. The Panthers have a plus front, and can put pressure on the opposing QB. In the other thread, Diesel posted stats for QB hurries, and the Panthers were 5th in the NFL. They were also 6th in sacks. That all helps a corner. While we had struggles in the defensive backfield last year, we also got very little pressure on opposing QBs. We had only 29 sacks, (and 16 came in 2 games, not coincidently, both wins, against the Titans and 49'ers) and the Panthers had a whopping 15 more sacks, and 20 more QB hurries than us. That all makes quite a difference. We gave opposing QBs all day last year, and that makes life difficult, to impossible, for a CB.

Anyway, I just don't see him as a fit here.

Will they?

Or, is it more likely that the Browns will go 3 and 13, blow things up after just two years, and start again w/yet another plan and Brown's fans will be buy in hook, line, and sinker?

Oh wait..........it's already happened.

What do you mean not everyone will be complaining!?!? Are you saying that people WANT the Browns to lose!? That they want this FO to fail? :-p

/sarcasm

I did not know that he was mostly a zone corner. I recall him matched up against the best each game. I'm not very knowledgeable about zone coverages, but it seems to me that if he's running with OBJ from the LoS all the way into the end zone and only giving up 1 TD like that, he should do fine in just about any scheme.

Truth be told, I'm much more curious about what led the Panthers to 180 like they did.

Pretty sure its mostly about the $$$. The ONE year big bucks from Franchising him was not the plan. They wanted a long term or possibly 3 years. He has had basically One good season which did happen and cannot be denied. But the Panthers made their living putting pressure on the QB. He did look excellent no denying that. But a UDFA wanting to be the highest paid CB in his first Contract negotiations. I can see the Panthers letting him go.

I wouldn't mind dropping Haden money on him. But I would be cautious of the guaranteed money. The fact that we would think about this is sad cause we picked Gilbert at #7 when a kid like this was available in UDFA.

Also we have to be careful on over spending. We know have to gear up to offer RG3 top $$$ for a franchise QB hopefully after this season. The sooner he shows he is worth it and us have him locked up long term...the easier I will breathe.

He would be a big time signing. Right now, I think the powers that be are counting on at least 4th round compensatory picks for both Schwartz and Mack.

Once we get better I can see these guys signing a few players and not being as concerned with picks, but right now, picks is where it is at with these people, and who can blame them?

Ray Farmer might possibly be the most inept GM to ever make draft picks, and that is saying a lot knowing Dwight Clark also made picks for this team. Good gosh, they are probably tied.

I agree with gaining picks at this point.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

How good will he look in SF or Washington? When he's not behind a great front 7?

Probably a lot like Haden did last year..

Norman is supposedly looking for money in the $14 to $16 mill a year range and Carolina didn't feel he was worth that kind of money and realized that a long term deal was impossible so they decided to move on and pulled the Franchise tag.

Is it the same if they drop the franchise tag...would that be like releasing him instead of being a FA? Asking cause this is the first time a Franchise tag has been dropped???

Tags have been dropped before. The Dolphins did so 6 or 7 years ago. The player becomes a free agent. He is not "cut", because he wasn't under contract.

Whoops, that was a transition tag. The Eagles have rescinded a Franchise Tag twice though, once in 202, pulling the Tag on Trotter, and then in 2005 when they rescinded the Tag on Corey Simon.

Hopefully Washington, so he can pick off the Bradford/Daniels/Rookie 3-headed monster and help us get a better pick.

I see.
I got the Never dropped the tag before from this statement on NFL com.

To rescind the tag a week before the NFL draft is unprecedented.

I took that the wrong way I guess the key was BEFORE THE DRAFT...my bad.

Browns sign WR Saalim Hakim

Posted 39 minutes ago

The Cleveland Browns signed wide receiver Saalim Hakim (pronounced sah-LEEM ha-KEEM). Hakim participated in the team’s voluntary minicamp last week on a tryout basis. In addition, the team waived TE Chase Ford.

Hakim is 5-11, 190-pounds and is officially in his second NFL season out of Tarleton State and Palomar College. Originally signed by Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2012, Hakim has appeared in 21 career games with the Jets (19 from 2013-14) and Chiefs (two in 2015). He has returned 13 career kickoffs for 279 yards and a 21.5 average. He also played in the UFL in 2011. His brother, Az-Zahir, appeared in 110 games with the Rams, Lions and Saints from 1998-2006. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Hakim graduated from Palo Verde High School.
