Wonderlic Test scores for DL and LBs entering the Draft; Nkemdiche doubled Buckner’s score
Robert Nkemdiche of Ole Miss is the best defensive tackle in this draft, and it is not even close

Robert Nkemdiche of Ole Miss is the best defensive tackle in this draft, and it is not even close

Some NFL teams actually look at the Wonderlic exam, and it does give you a little bit of a feeling of how smart the player is you are dealing with. Since the draft process began, one player that has been badmouthed by everyone is Robert Nkemdiche. They sit here and say that he is not a smart kid and makes dumb decisions. That may be the case, but this Wonderlic Score shows a little different. Nkemdiche doubled the score of DeForest Buckner who is projected as a top 5 pick. He also had a better score than Kevid Dodd, and Shaq Lawson of Clemson.

While it means nothing to many, it means that Nkemdiche is not as dumb as experts think.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Wow, Buckner is a moron and Bosa is pretty smart. I don't want to put too much emphasis on this, but generally speaking, idiots are probably harder to coach.

Wow! 50 out of 50 and 9 out of 50. Incredible.

I really hope the Browns don't draft Buckner. I don't think they will, but just reiterating.

Has anyone ever gotten a perfect score on the wonderlic test? 50 of 50 is crazy, could that be a misprint or something? I'm not saying it is, but wow if it is true WE GOTTA GET THIS GUY!!! angel

I still like Buckner over Jones, but I agree....9 of 50? You could probably guess that many since there are usually a few throw away questions in there that any idiot can answer.

I'm thinking the Chris Jones score is a misprint, since there is no mention of it in the narrative, and I would think a 50 of 50 warrants at least a comment.

Don't you get 10 points on the Wonderlic for spelling your name right?

The most concerning score on there, to me, is Reggie Ragland. That dude is supposed to be the "QB of the defense."

He better hope that he interviewed well. That's usually what FO's fall back on with a bad wonderlic.

If I'm not mistaken Ray Lewis scored a 13. And Manziel had a higher score than Peyton....

I agree with your premise for sure - the guys leading your team should show smarts, but the wonderlic might not be the best indicator based on that.

We've been all over this in past years. It seems the wonderlic scores test the ability to learn and solve problems.

But then there is football IQ which is something quite different.

To Trojans Coach Lane Kiffin, academic classroom intelligence, football awareness and football classroom intelligence are separate. He said school smarts don't correlate to football smarts, and how well you can explain a play on a white board usually does not relate to how well you can execute it.

Kiffin says football awareness is what takes over in game situations. It's understanding angles, but also adjusting on the fly. And it's what goes on your video — or as Kiffin calls it, your resume."

The Hall of Fame Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Alan Page weighed two hundred and forty-five pounds, the dimension of a modern fullback. Even so, Page was terrifying. His forty-yard-dash time wasn’t anything special, either, but he says that he could run down faster opponents because he always had sense where he was in relation to the blur of bodies around him—he could “understand the situation.” Page is now an Associate Justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court. “Being a football player requires you to take your emotional self to places that most people shouldn’t go,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to get to know the person who was in my head on a football field. I likely see some of these people in my current job—those who can’t control that person—and they do not do very nice things.

I asked him, “You could control that person on a field?”

“Most of the time,” Page said.

I was gonna say... The guy can't even put his pants on properly.

That being said I really don't care about wonderlic for defensive linemen. I guess I could be persuaded that a really bad linebacker score could be a cause for concern, but I don't put too much stock into it for defenders.

Not only do I agree with you, I would take that even a step further. Not only do I feel Wonderlic scores are overrated, I believe that the combine and pro days are overrated.

Sometimes guys are simply football players. You simply can't substitute the adrenaline and the environment which includes the competitive juices of an actual game. There is no substitute for that. You can look for tendencies and you can talk to players which can be helpful, but only game tape can tell you the abilities or lack there of about a how a player performs under pressure.

I believe the rest of the combine and pro days are more for the fans and the media to make something out of nothing, for headlines and to keep the NFL relative during a time of the year where it would otherwise not be.

Now that's just my opinion but I've seen far too often how people go ga ga over freakish athletic ability while overlooking great football players.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
