Shon Coleman is okay. Project. Very raw. Needs a lot of refinement to technique and how to react to stunts, blitzes, etc....

The Kessler pick was terrible! Don't get that pick at all.

However, all things considered..........I'm pretty happy w/this draft.

I think you have to view Coleman as a guy that we drafted in his Freshman year. Yes he is raw, but that is because he was getting his treatments when other guys were in their learning seasons.

I think that he is already there as a run blocker and pass blocking is where he is still rough.

What I really like about him is that he is hungry and is not going to give less than his best effort. He played quite a few times as an extra TE as well and you know that Hue won't hesitate to put that into his playbook.

Oh on about character...

Guess where he held is draft party? In the hospital that treated him. Gotta love that.

I'm definitely biased because I was hoping that we'd take him with that pick before it happened, so take my view with a grain of salt.

I didn't know that. That's pretty cool.

From PFF:

PFF SCOUTING REPORT: SHON COLEMAN, OT, AUBURN
PFF ANALYSIS TEAM

Below is the PFF draft profile for Auburn’s Shon Coleman, which incorporates PFF’s college grades and scouting intel from our team of analysts. To see all of PFF’s 2016 scouting reports, click here.

Position fit:
Offensive tackle

Stat to know:
97.4 pass blocking efficiency was 34th in FBS

Combine stats:
Height: 6-5
Weight: 307
Arm length: 35 ⅛ inches
Hand size: 10 ⅝ inches
Bench: 22
*Did not participate in drills at combine or pro day due to knee injury

What he does best:
–Lines up a down block as well as anyone in the class. Highest-graded tackle on the playside of power runs in the class
–Takes great angles of attack on double teams. Gets clean shots on the defender instead of his own left guard
–Very patient in finding linebackers at the second level. Won’t fly to second level out of control and regularly locks in
–Good power throughout his frame. Can drop his hips and drive

Biggest concern:
–Far too easily knocked off balance. Has his shoulder pads out in front of his feet too often
–Knock kneed and awkward in his pass sets. Projection that area because he took very few true pass sets in Auburn’s offense
–Likes to duck his head when delivering his punch in pass protection
–Played a good amount as an extra tight end on the right side and footwork was an issue. A transition to right tackle could be rocky
–Already 24 years old

Bottom line:
Coleman is already one of the most polished run blockers in the class, but his age and inexperience as a pass blocker will push him down draft boards

Only time will tell. But I don't think the strategy is flawed...execution maybe

I'm open when it comes to the draft and I always try to keep in mind that even the best only hit on about 50-60% of their picks.

Some I like, some are questions marks, some I've never heard of...

But, net-net I feel like they addressed some impact positions with good prospects...
They certainly improve speed in the receiving corps
They tried to address the nickel/overall pass rush

Draft isn't over yet and there's still UDFA

If it weren't for trading around, we would have had half the picks we have.

We have more chances to hit on players because we have more picks. In a normal draft, we might hit on 1/4 of our picks, or 1-2 players who might become starters.

Already I see 3 or 4 "guys" who could well become starters, and maybe even plus level starters. Maybe the later round picks are situational guys .... maybe backups ... or maybe special teams guys ..... but those guys have value as well.

If we had stayed where we originally entered this draft, we would have picked at 2, 32, 65, 99, 141, 176, and 223. At this point in the draft, we would have taken 5 players, with 2 yet to come.

Instead, we have taken 9 players so far, and still have 5 picks yet to come.

We have so many more chances to hit with the way we have gone in this draft. This is the same tact the Seahawks and Patriots take ..... trading around, adding a lot of picks, and when they hit on an average, or slightly above average number of players, because they have more to start with, they
hit more often.

Given the barren status of our roster, the more chances we have to hit on players, the better.

I was good up til Kessler. Since then, 1 guy I like (Shobert) and a bunch I've never heard of. Who is Louis and is he going to be a WR or FS? Is DeValve (another who?) going to be a WR or TE/H-Back? I will say this, he is HUGE.

U knew that going in bro .... This MONEYBALL CRAP relies to much on analytics and not enough on FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE ....

U saw that article one of our fellow Dawgs posted that was about 18 pages long and was basically all crap supporting the draft strategy of the volume of picks is the more important than the quality of picks ...

I read 15 mins of crap ... Then the 3rd or last 4th sentence was this ....

Quality of picks doesn't matter, the quantity of picks is what's important ....

I was mad as hell when I read that line .... they couldn't have put that in the first or second paragraph .... I would have saved 15 minutes of reading ...

We both know that's BS .... It's one thing to trade form 2 to 8 ... Then 8 to 15 .... It's an entirely different story to trade from 39 to 64 ..... Or from 57 to 84 ... THATS A HUGE DROP in the chances those players can contribute right away OR will NEVER CONTRIBUTE ....

This MONEYBALL CRAP is a joke ....

The bright side for U bro ... In most drafts your pissed in rnd 1 .. At least this year in the rounds where we're going to get most of our impact player from anyhow ... U liked who we got ....

So although they did not do what u wanted starting with the last pick of rnd 3 ... At least u got 4 guys u liked before that .... Actually, I'm not so sure what your all that upset about ....

And ya .. I know it could have been better ... Point is .. For u .. It's usually a lot worse ...

That said, have wait to see what they bring to the field before passing judgement.

Literally every team in the NFL using them.

Why does it have to be all or none?

Using the analytics crap doesn't mean they don't know football.

Football people also use analytics.

I don't have a problem with the draft philosophy.

In the quantity vs. quality game, I'm going with quantity. Here's why:

-Even the best drafting teams consider a "good draft" coming away with 2 or 3 legit starters. The Draft is inherently a system designed to work against you (even worse for the Browns over the last few years).

-You have to give yourself as many chances as possible to strike gold. I don't think the Browns are trying to draft "just guys." This doesn't feel like the Mangini drafting philosophy. These guys are putting something eye popping on film and have a statistic to back it up.

-There's also a specific personality type they seem to be drafting. There's a formula and I'm intrigued by it.

With 14 picks, even if they draft average, they're walking away with 5 eventual starters. That's if you're drafting at the Phil Savage or Tom Heckert skill level.

A question. After their respective drafts but before hitting the field was Richard Sherman just a guy?
"Sherman is a size prospect with some good intangibles that will help him mold into a contributing backup corner for a press-heavy team. However, he does not possess the natural coverage instincts, fluidity or burst to be considered a future starter. Is comfortable and capable in press man, using his size to disrupt receivers' releases off the line, but doesn't show enough make up speed to consistently recover when beaten. Awareness in zone and off-man are only adequate. Has average ball skills but some upside as a playmaker. Tough against the run but still developing from a technical standpoint. Sherman is a Day 3 prospect."

What about Josh Norman?
"Norman is a solid prospect from small-school Coastal Carolina. He has great size for the cornerback position and parlays this with an ability to move fluidly and match up with big, athletic wide receivers. He reminds some of a young Ike Taylor, a tall and athletic big corner from a smaller school. Norman does not quite possess the blazing speed that Taylor did when coming into the NFL, however. Teams will be worried about the level of competition he has been playing at for the past four years, but look for Norman to be selected in the fourth round to a team looking to develop a young, big, athletic corner, and contribute early on special teams.
40 YARD DASH: 4.66 "

I'm not saying that any of our 'just guys' we drafted are going to be probowlers. But I'm also not going to rule it out until they have a chance to prove it.

Question:

If I like some of the players and give them good reviews and don't like some of the players and give them bad reviews, am I being biased and my points are illogical?

Heck, one more question:

Is it okay to express my points about each player on a football message board?

Absolutely. I'm not arguing. Nor shouting you down. It was honestly just a question with a little bit of an implied statement of none of us really knowing the answer at this time.

I've been pretty happy with the draft so far, I think after the 3rd round it is pretty much a crap shoot on who might be good and who will never make it in the NFL. My only head scratcher is Kessler, I though a project like Cardel Jones was a better prospect for a chance player. I guess I have to take Hue's word for it only time will tell. I've followed this board for years and have never figured out what "j/c" means, I never wanted to ask to look stupid but I must at this point can someone tell me please.

I didn't either, until the other day when someone explained it means "just commenting" meaning "not responding to any specific previous post."

And here, you replied using the "quick reply" screen, making it appear you were replying to the original post that started this thread.

Not chewing you out at all.

But often times, it gets confusing when people don't know who you're replying to - or IF you're replying to someone directly, or if you're just adding a comment to the thread.

Plus, I must add, I don't follow college football much. Most of the players drafted, I've only heard their names, if that.

I don't study the draft, I don't do mocks, etc. The only thing I could do would be to give my uninformed opinion. (and, let's face it, even the "informed" opinions, as well as "professional" opinions are just that: opinions, albeit better opinions than mine)

I like reading others takes - as wide and varied as they are - but, I simply wanted to remind people I'm original, and awesome.

JUST CLICKING

I have no idea who amongst the plethora of young men we drafted will or will not work out for us. I do know if any of the pass rushers they selected work out I won't be seeing 1 0 1 0 2 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 etc. sacks per game anymore. That will be nice. I HATED our defense the last couple years. How many flavors of the NPD have we suffered through since the return? If you can't get to the QB I don't care how good your secondary is you will get beat eventually. Making the QB move off his mark then giving him what passes for a beating in the modern NFL is vital. They certainly did address the pass rush. How well they did so will have to wait until we see them all play but they DID address the pityful state of our pass rush.

I'm going to copy an excerpt from this article that supports my previous points. It's about giving yourself as many chances to hit on players as possible.

"Many personnel evaluators like to think they can identify talent better than their competitors. Most statistical studies, in terms of draft hits and misses, show that not to be the case. Volume is what analytics tells us might be more important to draft success, and it's now clear the Browns will be a case study in that theory moving forward."

I agree, I love the picks of Ogba, Nassim and Shobert. Nassim and Shobert seem to have question marks about their measurables as to if they will succeed in the NFL but I love their motors, hopefully they can give us pressure. Nassib led the NCAA in sacks regardless of their physical knocks they seem to get at it with desire, Gilbert and Manziel could care less if they play football, I'll take players who have a heart.

As I read in SI I believe - talking about the crapshoot the draft is: The best way to get a good pick, is to have 2 picks. (or more)

As I read some of the posts on here and posts on other boards I'm amazed and amused that a group of people can look at the same event and see two totally different scenes. Some see something resembling the apocalypse. Others see the best thing since sliced bread and beer in a can.

I see a good draft meant to start building toward a sustainably good team. I see players being drafted as much for how their brains work as how their abs look. Guys that hate to lose more than they love to win. I see a draft where all 14 guys taken have a real chance to make the team. Maybe I'm wrong. Lord knows that's been the case more than once since 1999. What I think is most important is that these guys seem to have a plan and they're finally willing to stick to it.

I gave up my season tickets at the start of last year because I was disgusted with just about everything regarding this team. The guys taken today and the way the Browns ran this draft have given me the first small glimmer of hope since I told Berea to keep their freakin' tickets. I don't expect a miracle this year or even next year. But I do think we'll see a team that doesn't give up on their coaches (or fans).

And that's a good start, in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree. This appears to be our best draft in years. {Disclaimer: for all of you who say it takes 3 years to evaluate a draft, I did say "appears to be..."}

I didn't like a few of the picks, but overall, I am pleased w/the draft and I think the FO did a pretty good job. Much better than the previous regime.

It just chaffs my butt when some of these posters gotta jump on people if they don't say every pick is great.

I agree. It was a good draft from my perspective. Like you, I didn't agree with all of the picks. The thing I don't like is when some posters bash things because the draft didn't go the way they wanted....like they know what they are talking about.

About 25-30 years ago I had dinner with Tommy Lasorda. Not a good friend, or even a friend for that matter, it just worked out that way. As we talked over a drink, he told me a story along these lines.

Every American male thinks he is better than every other male at these 3 things:

Building a campfire,
Making love to a woman,
and managing a baseball team.

I suppose you can make that selecting football players as well.

It was then I realized he was manager of the Dodgers, winning the Series, and I was managing a collection of decent college players in a summer league. Well, I realized it before that, but, you know what I mean.

Maybe it's best to lean towards the opinion of those at the top of the game.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I don't view it the same way.

I have read over and over and over where people [maybe even you] say things like:

Excellent pick
Steal
Great value
I love this pick

No one challenges it.

Yet, if someone criticizes a pick........they get bombarded w/insults.

I praised several moves the Browns made. I criticize the Kessler pick and I gotta read crap where tab says: "no know nothings like Vers...." And YOU liked that freaking post.

It's ridiculous.

Some people are going to like everything.

Others are going to hate everything.

I'm not going to let either kind upset me.

Speaking just for myself, I like this draft overall. There are picks I like better than others, and some that left me scratching my head. Overall, though, I thought this was a really good draft, and we could see as many as 5 or 6 starters from the players taken today. I think that we will see major changeover on this team, and as poorly as they have performed lately, that's not a bad thing. These young guys will get a chance to grow, along with other young players who were either already here, or who were brought in this year outside of the draft.

I am firmly in the camp of those who say that the more picks you have, especially in the first 4 or 5 rounds, the more picks you are likely to hit on.

I think that we will look at this draft as having been a really good one, when we look back 5 years from now.
