Is walmart supposed to allow themselves to get ripped off continually? Should they allow people to steal what they want? No, certainly not. I don't think anyone is advocating that. I think people are just trying to have a discussion about the allocation of resources. I certainly think it's a very bad precedent to have hoops people (Since corporations are people) need to jump through to get a police response. But I also don't think Wal Mart should be taking policemen off the streets. It's certainly an interesting discussion.

quote above by YTown:
"...who had blown up in a really short period of time, due to a medical condition."
You've gotta be kidding.
The old "I'm not fat - it's a medical condition" spiel.
You realize how ridiculous that is, right?
So do you think when people with this "medical condition" are placed in a cell and are fed fewer calories than they burn, their body magically maintains it's weight?
Which "magical condition" is that? One of the "magical conditions" you could be referring to if you bothered to investigate is Cushing's disease. My wife has had 2 surgeries due to this disease but luckily diagnosed it herself early before the massive weight gain. Prior to that sheate healthy, even weighed her food & was on an elliptical for an hour every morning before work and still could not take weight off. Since her ordeal I look at overweight people much differently. Just be lucky you have not been so cursed. I watched a documentary on the disease featuring Dr Theodore Friedman from UCLA who is somewhat of an expert on the disease. The patient featured in that episode was a former college track athlete, who at the age of about 28 started gaining massive amounts of weight. AS I said be consider yourself lucky. There are "magical conditions" out there that cause such a thing.

I have no doubt about that.
But, I get into a lot of homes in the course of my work. The "magical" conditions you speak of are, in my experience, few and far between.
Most obese people - again, in MY experience, eat crap, and too much of it.
I can't tell you how often I see kitchen counters and dining room tables full of pre packaged food. To the point you can't see the counter tops, or the table.
Plastic bags, plastic containers. Trash cans full of cardboard boxes that once contained "heat and serve" stuff.
Just a couple of weeks ago, an obese lady, in her bedroom, had a dresser right beside her bed. 1 of the drawers had no clothes - but it had 3 bags of different flavored chips, 3 different containers of cookies, candy bars, gummy chews, etc.
Her living room was full of plates. Piled on the floor. Candy wrappers all over the floor.
What you're talking about happens, no doubt. But most - the vast majority, of obesity is due to too many calories going in, and not enough going out.
Lady in our church - same story. Obese, to the point walking down the aisle was a chore. Her eyes got opened when she had open heart surgery. She lost a ton of weight. Why? She started eating food, instead of junk. Sadly, it only lasted about 2 years.
Yes, there are some health issues that can cause obesity. I have nothing to back this up, but I'd say maybe 2-5% can legitimately claim that.

I know what you guys were referring to but I am aware of many of the people who share my wife's issue & it appears that much is undiagnosed. I have met many at medical conferences. It usually involves a specific body type and we walk past many and just look at each other and know what each is thinking. MY daughter gained about 80 lbs over 2 years and my wife assumed she might have the same thing. It turned out her body was extremely deficient in HGH. Her body does not produce it and now she injects everyday and is losing weight and her depression is significantly reduced. I do realize that many obese people have themselves to blame, but I am much less judgmental when I see someone of that size, having no idea if it is medical or not. Just saying we might want to be less judgemental.

From "The People of Walmart" You gotta be joking. Wait, actually "urine collection leg bags could one day be the style. I believe it already is in Podunk, Kentucky. I want the stylish "go anywhere sports bag". "I'm walking, talking, shopping and evacuating my bladder." Yet most people wouldn't complain if this girl wore here colostomy bag out in public.

they don't have to do anything. this is America. if they choose to wear it out in the open, thats on them.
that doesn't change the fact that nobody wants to see it.
i didn't say they must cover it up. don't reach.
they have the right to do it, just like i have the right to voice my opinion about it.

Is walmart supposed to allow themselves to get ripped off continually? Should they allow people to steal what they want? They should stop being so cheap and hire their own security rather than overloading the local police with petty theft calls.

If my home alarm goes off and nobody is available to silence it, the police are called. I think I get 2 freebies. After that, the police charge me $100 for responding to false alarms.. I don't see why Wal-mart shouldn't have the same deal. Only it should be $1000 instead of $100 and whether the call was warranted would be completely up to the police.

They cannot file their own police reports. They cannot even search a suspect against their will. What they can do is detain a suspect until the police arrive. Wal-Mart does have security personnel. They can apprehend a shoplifter, and they can detain him, but that's it. Then the police have to take over. Man, I can just imagine the uproar if Wal-Mart were able to actually arrest and charge people with crimes.

Wal Mart could pay per call for police service. You know what would happen? They would charge the consumer more, then people that arent shoplifting get to pay for that too.

Wal-Mart does have security personnel. They can apprehend a shoplifter, and they can detain him, but that's it. Then the police have to take over.
They have very little security personnel. That is part of the problem. The article states: That’s all the more reason for a for-profit company like Walmart to adequately secure its stores, experts said. One solution: Hire more uniformed security guards. Research shows that they effectively deter misbehaving customers and can cut down on theft. Malls, for instance, often employ guards to manage everyday nuisances like noise complaints and loitering teens. Some Publix stores have guards in brown uniforms near the door.
Private security guards perform “all of those policing functions to both prevent the low-level disorder and also to respond to it, only calling police if in their judgment it might turn violent,” said Michael Scott, director of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing.
Walmart makes plenty of money and attracts so many police calls “that it would be reasonable to expect them to hire their own private security,” said Scott, also a former Lauderhill police chief in Broward County. The idea of patrolling is such common sense that the police do it for free. The article also states Responding to Walmart has become so routine that officers show up without even being called. They drive slowly through the parking lot or stop to write unrelated reports. Other times they go inside and walk the aisles, or just buy a soda.
For patrol officers, these unsolicited visits to Walmarts are an easy decision, said Scott, the former Lauderhill police chief.
“Look, I either get called there later, or I go there now and prevent things,” he said.
The Times found more than 6,200 of these visits, on top of the other 16,800 calls.
Garafano, the former Walmart employee in Brandon, said he sometimes saw sheriff's patrol cars parked near the supercenter on East Brandon Boulevard, even when nothing was happening.
“It was almost like they were kind of just waiting to get a call,” he said.
It's honestly a perplexing case. Wal Mart is not breaking any laws. They are the victim of crimes. However, 99% of these crimes are preventable with just basic measures. And they're in the wrong, because they can afford it. But they still aren't in the wrong legally nor should they be. It's ridiculous to try to legislate someone to protect themselves to qualify for assistance. But darnit walmart.

No Target (I'm not sure how comparable they are business wise) has 1/5th of the calls to police and 1/3 of the calls per 1000 sq ft. They have minimal security, but their employees patrol the stores. These are problems that Wal Mart can easily address, but refuse to.

There is a different clientèle at Target. They advertise to a more upscale market, and are also not open 24 hours/day, as many Wal-Marts are.
You are really comparing 2 largely different entities.
As far as security, Wal-Marts around here have no uniformed security, (except for the Christmas season, go figure) However, they do employ a fairly large plain clothed security force. They also make extensive use of video cameras throughout the store, and monitor suspicious people closely as they go through the store. Some assume that because no one appears to be tracking them through the store, that no one is watching .... but they are often wrong.
My mom worked for Wal-Mart for many years as a door greeter. I don't say any of this stuff because I think that Wal_mart is some amazing employer. My mom was a door greeter, and they put here in some difficult, and even potentially dangerous situations, when they tried to make their force of 70-80 year old women (mainly) into some arm of their security force. )which, obviously, did not work) My local Wal-Mart is a horribly run business, with empty shelves all over the place, and far too few cashiers working. However, that was to be expected when they raised wages though.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

The difference between Target and Wal Mart are not ones I made. They are in the article that you clearly did not read. You speak a lot of false claims based on anecdotal evidence. The article states: Reporters also considered that Walmart stores are often open overnight, while Targets close at 11 p.m. or earlier. But the Times analysis found that most police calls came during the afternoon and evening hours when both Walmart and Target are open. Only about 11 percent came during the overnight hours.
Target does have a higher end clientele, a reason why I'm not sure how fair the comparisons are, but they also employ a lot of the techniques stated in the article. And it makes sense. Target is employing broken window theory to some extent. Not saying that you're lying about your mother's tragic position. But the idea that Wal Mart employs a bunch of anonymous security guards is a joke. If they only put them in security clothes, their crime rates would plummet.
