so it's official we got Mike Dunleavy for one of our trade exceptions.

He's a good shooter, floor spacer, and teammate (LBJ wanted him for years)

But he's awful on the defensive end.

Similar to a Frye type player

Yeah, good body off the bench. I wanted him before he resigned in Chicago.

Great news for the Cavaliers!

Richard Jefferson announces he's returning to Cleveland on a two-year deal | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2016/07/richard_jefferson_announces_he.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Free agent forward Richard Jefferson announced he's re-signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jefferson, 36, made the announcement Wednesday night on his Snapchat account.

His message read, "Can't wait to repeat...2 year deal done!! The Land you ready?"

His deal is for two-years at $5 million.

Initially Jefferson said he was retiring after the Cavaliers won the NBA title, but later reversed course at the team's championship parade. LeBron James and company talked him out of retirement following a 15-year career.

Jefferson played a vital role in serving as James' backup. His play elevated as the season went along and it carried into the postseason where he had a strong showing. In 74 appearances for the Cavaliers, he averaged 5.5 points and 1.7 rebounds.

the only problem with having Jefferson and Dunleavy (old vet ring chaser types) is that at some point they hit the wall and can't contribute at all (aka Mike Miller). Just hope it's not this year!

An obvious Chicago issue: Shooting. Of projected perimeter starters--Rondo, Butler, Wade--the best three-point shooter, statistically: Rondo

I always liked Dunleavy as a player, but he really struggled last year after coming back from his back surgery. McDermott actually played better than Dunleavy.

No comments about the man's back surgery until that one... which is a huge concern, for me anyway.

The Jefferson deal, and I don't care about his age, is awesome. Welcome back from retirement RJ! Glad to have ya back...

I think we lucked out, Dunleavy is a better fit for how this team is constructed right now. I just hope our "old timers" can contribute over the next couple of years.

I'll feel a lot better if we get JR signed, then fill in the last few spots with some young guys.

In a surprise turn, the NBA is pulling back on its salary-cap projection for the 2017-18 season, and it could complicate the Golden State Warriors' efforts to keep their new super team together, according to a league memo obtained by ESPN.

The league previously projected the 2017-18 cap to hit $107 million but lowered that number to $102 million Thursday and lowered the luxury tax line projection from $127 million to $122 million.

This will affect teams' planning for 2017 free agency -- specifically the Warriors. Kevin Durant is signing a contract Thursday that will allow him to re-enter the market as a free agent next summer. Because the Warriors will not have his full rights at that time, they will have to create $33.5 million in cap space if Durant wants a new max contract at that time.

Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala are also scheduled to be free agents next summer. The Warriors retain both players' full rights but it will be a challenge to re-sign them while also leaving room for Durant. That challenge was just projected to be $5 million more difficult.
The NBA lowered its salary cap projection for 2017-18 by $5 million, which would make it that much more difficult to keep Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala as they are all scheduled to become free agents after this next season. Andrew Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

It is noteworthy that these projections are based on the current collective bargaining agreement. Both the NBA and the players' union have an opt to end the agreement by Dec. 15 and are expected to do so. The sides have been in talks about a new agreement for months and new terms could change all the projections.

The players currently receive up to 51 percent of the basketball-related income, which this year topped $6.5 billion. There was a shortfall and the owners returned a record $130 million to the players. In the memo sent Thursday, the NBA projected a shortfall next year of $200 million that would be sent to the players.

The NBA appears to be trying to limit the FA spending here, but the horse is already out of the barn IMO. KD, Curry, Klay, etc can just take slightly less to stay together.

Well, in that case, wouldn't they just let Iguodala walk and retain Curry and KD at the max? He'll be 33 next year. I don't think they'd want to max him out then anyway. Sure, it'll be a bit harder, but they'll find a way to keep the right pieces.

I suppose it sucks that this is the "new NBA" but I'm okay with it. It does create clear villains to root against. And I still don't think it's a lock they advance to the Finals next year. I would think San Antonio might be able to push them to 7 (and the Clippers if they can stay healthy).

Plus, one or two injuries can dismantle a team in a series. Look at AI and Bogut, that killed the Warriors.

I don't know if Iggy would require the max ... but I do know they really like him on the team. His age may be a big detractor, but I bet they'd try to keep him.

In terms of them not reaching the finals, I'd be very surprised. I think it would take a heck of an effort to beat them in a series (barring health of course).

Yeah, it's not like Curry and Durant have the healthiest of feet. Either one of them could find themselves out. Heck, Curry's tweaked knee in the 2nd round might have been another reason why he wasn't playing well in the Finals.

Health is a concern for every team, even the Warriors.

In 2014-15, we had Kendrick Perkins, who was willing and able to protect his teammates. I think that we lacked that this past year. It would have been nice to have someone willing and able to knock an opponent who tried to hurt one of our players right on his butt.

This is a tiny move that not many would notice, but it's significant for us. The Cavs matched the Bucks offer for Delly ... and then traded him to Milwaukee for a $5 million trade exception.

smart move

Griffin does use all of the tools of the trade when it comes to the salary cap.

I am curious as to why the trade exemption is less than $5 million though? Is that hie 1st year salary on a 4 year, $38.5 million deal?

Griffin does use all of the tools of the trade when it comes to the salary cap.

I am curious as to why the trade exemption is less than $5 million though? Is that hie 1st year salary on a 4 year, $38.5 million deal?

I believe they used the trade exception from Delly to get Dunleavy and the left over money is the $4.8 million from the Varejao exception. I could be wrong.

I thought that they had already used the Varejao trade exemption on Dunleavy. (part of it, anyway)

I see no sense is using the newest (and soonest to expire) trade exemption 1st.

I thought there was something about how trade exceptions can be combined though. If we'd lose value by having part of Varejao's and none of Delly's as opposed to saving the full Varejao and using the full new one, then that would make sense.
