Admist all the talk about the change Hue Jackson is attempting to bring to the team....
I want to know when if ever the Browns will ever have
A identity on par with rest of the AFC North
A team that actually protects and stands for its QB when
He's cheap shotted.
A team that can go 12 Rds with another team and the other team knows it was in a battle.
A team that can actually win at home more than twice a year?
Talent is great and all along with schemetics
But it's meaningless if you can't physically match up with a team and then have them mentally beaten
The Browns have been a soft franchise on the field since 1999...
Can Hue change that ?

Well, there were complaints of Oakland being a dirty team while Hue was in Oakland and the Bengals are the dirtiest team in the entire NFL, so one could expect to see more of what you are talking about. However, I don't know if dirty equates to tough.

I'll settle for talent, execution and wins. We start seeing some of that, maybe they'll stop acting like the stray dogs of the league.

I don't know if dirty equates to Hue's coaching style. I think tough does tho.

LOL ... can't blame you for the snarky reply back. But you did make the claim that Hue had much to do with Oak and Cincy to perpetrate dirty play. I highly doubt it. But whatever.

Just want to point out that the Raiders have had their reputation going back long before Hue Jackson became their HC.

Guys like Phil Vallapiano, Jack Tatum, John Matuszak, Lyle Alzado...just to name a few who helped to establish the reputation that pre-dated Hue Jackson's time with the Raiders.

I believe Hue has a reputation as someone who is smart, tough and hard working with a lot of spirit and determination. What his team becomes will reflect upon Hue's personality and coaching traits as well as the personalities and traits of the coaching staff.

Here we are, yet another new beginning, but there is also an opportunity to fill a void on this team. The void I'm referring to, is the need for "leadership" from the players. Whether that leadership comes from one individual player or a group of like minded players..this team needs leaders.

It will be interesting to see where the leadership comes from and the type personality the team develops.

Oakland has had or was in the running for most penalized team long before and after Hue was there. Saying Hue was responsible for them being dirty because he coached a dirty team for a year is lazy.

Cinci's defense is dirty. I'm not so sure about their offense.

I'm not sure how anyone can come to a conclusion either way on how much intensity Hue will pump into this team.

There is only one answer:

Personnel decisions.

The decisions on how and who to draft. The decisions on who to let go and who to sign. The decisions on what free agents are worth going after and how much to offer.

There are plenty of coaches available who can coach talent. There are a few coaches who can win with lesser talent.

Without a top ten quarterback it is hard to win with any consistency.

The most obvious formula to win consistently is continuity in the front office and continuity through the coaching staff.

Continuity is insured when good decisions are made and winning is consistent.

In the end personnel decisions on players and coaches determine success.

Hue's a dirty coach because Al Davis literally spent a decade trying to recreate the attitude the Raiders had in the 80's with far less talented players? Hue's a bad coach because he took a 4-12 team to 8-8? Hue didn't make Andy Dalton, but no mention of his tutelage of Flacco and Palmer? I think Browns fans haven't seen a head coach in so long they forgot what one looks like. I'm not sure if some would be able to tell Bill Belichick apart from a hobo in a torn hoodie.

Palmer was horrible on the Raiders when Jackson was the head coach.

That's not how I remember it. Palmer was horrible for the Bengals that year, was traded, and played respectable until he got injured (off the top of my head). He was battling injuries all year, iirc.

My mistake. I was confusing his first stint with the Bengals as a QB coach instead of a WR coach. I don't really remember much of Palmer's stint in Oakland besides the fact he was throwing it to DHB, who might be the only player that's worse at catching the ball than Greg Little, and an old TJ Who'syourmama. Could that have had something to do with Palmer's slump? Not to mention they got him midyear.

The Raiders got Palmer around week 5 6 in that trade where Hue gave the Bengals 2 FIRST RD DRAFT PICKS!!
I think Palmer did well considering he had to.learn new offense wrs etc

Fine line between dirty and tough. Shame some hate the Browns so much to equate the tough reputation Hue brings to his teams to that of their HS glory where they play dirty and taught or were taught HOW TO PLAY DIRTY.

I'm sure Hue's staff is teaching DIRTY TECHNIQUES to their players cause we got nothing else to teach and we are looking be the most penalized team.

Some of the experts on this board are down right...well afraid to state a "WORD" cause then posters go crying to refs...as I come back from utilizing a word that is often used and was banned. smh

I guess you didn't really actually claim it. Sorry I just took it that way when you implied, hinted, insinuated, and even indicated that Hue was with two separate teams that played dirty and one should expect to see more.

Is it sad that I'm just hoping we can finally run a screen proficiently? frown

I don't think we ever in the 17 years since 1999 have run a successful MIDDLE SCREEN...I mean just never even close.

I can barely remember any good screens in general

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I love screens. Devaststing play. Center screen is especially so, but not with us much.
Sweeps and screens seem underused (or under-attempted). Not sure we can run either one. But the way we have seen the box loaded up and have seen extra blitzing, we could use some misdirection calls to help slow it down or help us a bit. Haven't had much success with that. More screens, please.

Teams have forever crowded our box as we have not had a vertical game since DA was kept clean for about 10 games.

We have been in that take what they give you short passes so that there are so many looking in on D they read our screens and stuff it.

Only the quick WR Screen has had some success. Some not enough.

jmho If we can get that vertical stretch with RG3 and he can keep the LB tight because of his running ability we might see some successful screens this year! We will see?

there were only three teams since 99 that I consistently felt "yeah, we are gonna drive down and score here"

- During the 1st half of the season with Brian Hoyer
- During Anderson/Edwards/Winslow Era for the one season
- During the playoff run in 02
