Catching is good. If he can run well and block, he just might be able to grab a roster spot.

Those are some really nice measurables and would make for one heckuva great target to go along with all of the other options.

I'd bet that his hands and measurables are the things that keep him hanging around, but running and blocking are why he's only been on practice squads.

You see Mingo playing ahead of Orchard?

I think that Orchard showed more at the end of last year than Mingo has in his entire time here.

Also, given that it appears that Mingo is bigger ... yet plays the same as he did last year ..... well, that does not bode well for him.

I see Mingo as having a better chance to be cut than to start. Don't know his cap number or dead $ ... but if we save any money on him being cut, then he's cut

I went to camp last Friday. RG 3 looked like hot garbage. Accuracy was awful.

Art Briles is at practice today. Good thing we don't have any cheerleaders...

That's not good to hear

Hate to hear that. But after only playing really well in his rookie year and going down hill ever since, it's about what I expected. There weren't many options during the off season so I didn't mind the signing. But let's face it, it was a reclamation project at best.

I hope he improves but people trying to spread fairy dust stories aren't being very realistic.

Except in Nickel situation Defenses rarely use a 3 man front with (2)5-tech DEs. Nickel is usually a 4 man DL with (2) bookend 7-9 tech DEs.

I know it's been reported that Ogbah is moving to 5-tech, but I believe those reports were relayed in error by those media members giving the report. (ie PFT)

I would be quite shocked and dismayed if Ogbah plays 5-tech DE more then a handful of times all season.

Takeaways from Day 5 of Browns training camp …

1. Baylor show-offs: Hue Jackson set off the sirens during a dull period early in practice and it kind of set off the Baylor Bears to make it happen on offense. On the first play, Robert Griffin III bootlegged to his left, threw across his body and hit Corey Coleman in stride crossing the middle of the field. Four plays later, Griffin found Coleman on a quick comeback route and Coleman did a shake, rattle and roll, juking past cornerback Jamar Taylor and brushing off safety Sean Taylor on the way to the end zone. In the audience loving it was ex-Baylor coach Art Briles, who later visited with his other former players – receiver Josh Gordon and tackle Spencer Drango. Briles has been making the rounds visiting his former players at NFL camps and was in Cincinnati on Monday.

2. RG3 improving: Overall, Jackson said he is quite pleased with the progress Griffin is showing with a new offense, new teammates and new environment. And that goes beyond what he sees on the field. “You have to lead,” Jackson said of the quarterback position. “It’s not just throwing the ball straight. Obviously that’s a real important quality. But he also has to uplift his teammates, have his teammates follow him. He’s improved by leaps and bounds. I think you guys can see it. He’s growing.” Jackson added, “And a lot of him getting better has to do with Josh McCown. Josh McCown has done a really good job spending time with him, mentoring him and helping him understand to try to make the biggest jump he can.” Jackson said he isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback, but “we’re getting close.”

3. Take that: In a one-on-one drill, Coleman beat cornerback Justin Gilbert in the end zone and the two engaged in some heated trash talk that prompted Jackson to immediately race in and break up. “One guy’s trying to score, the other’s trying to stop him,” Jackson said. “I never want to have anything escalate. We can’t tolerate that. That can’t happen on the field. Our guys have to learn to keep their poise and control their emotions.”

4. The other Cam: One player way under radar who is sparking some conversation among coaches and players is Cam Johnson. Buried on the Browns practice squad for 13 weeks last year, Johnson actually has gotten a few reps at outside linebacker with the No. 1 defense – ahead of Barkevious Mingo -- when Nate Orchard isn’t in there. Johnson, 26, was a seventh-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2012 and also spent two years with the Colts before being waived at last year’s final roster cut. At 6-4 and 268 pounds, Johnson is the biggest outside linebacker on the roster because rookie Emmanuel Ogbah has been moved to end. “We’ve been very pleased with Cam so far,” said Ryan Slowik, outside linebackers coach. “He’s taken even a nice little jump from the spring to now. He’s been pretty good at what he does. Guys like that, that are that big-bodied and can play that well in space, you kind of always try to experiement with them doing different things and see where that falls.” As for Johnson’s background rising from the practice squad, Slowik said, “Everybody’s experience is unique. Our job is just to recognize when somebody’s doing what they’re asked to do and help them keeping doing it.” Orchard, who is the front-runner for the starting job, said of Johnson, “Right now he’s definitely right up there competing for the starting job.”

4. Observations: Center Cam Erving had an elbow dinged in a goal-line drill and watched the rest of practice. Backup Garth Gerhart was first in … Receiver Andrew Hawkins hurt a hamstring after a back-shoulder catch in the end zone … Defensive end John Hughes was excused for personal reasons … Rookie linebacker Joe Schobert has been working exclusively on the outside and Scooby Wright has been on the inside. Coaches say there are packages in which those roles could be reversed … With Gary Barnidge being eased in after sports hernia surgery in June, all the young tight ends are getting increased reps. It’s a complete free-for-all for the two spots after Barnidge … Receiver Terrelle Pryor introduced himself to Briles and said, “I’m a big fan.” Briles responded: “I see you T.P. You keep working.” … Per CBA, players get their first night and day off and return to work on Thursday.

Welcome to the dog days of August. Hot and humid conditions for the team on day four of camp and once again the guys were in pads.

Again here are the guidelines. We will only compare the QB numbers of all four quarterbacks in 11 on 11 drills and 7 on 7 drills. While there will be other drills (one on one’s for example) that we will show you throughout camp, the only numbers that will count in terms of completion percentage are in the drills mentioned above. It means Jackson understands that our team has to get tough.

While I appreciate the raw completion numbers, I would appreciate more context with them.

Are the QBs dinking and dunking? Are the attacking down the field? Are they putting the ball on target, or are the receivers having to make a lot of adjustments to the ball that they may not be able to make in actual games, against tight coverage?

With so few pass attempts and with only 4-5 practices in the books I'm not even sure how much that matters. We'll learn those things from the preseason games.

I understand that writers want to create something for people to read ..... but the raw numbers are really meaningless without any perspective. The meaningful stuff is now the QBs are throwing the ball ... are they accurate to varying levels of the field? .... do they put the ball on target so the receiver can run after the catch?..... and so on.

The QB position will be settled before the 1st pre-season game. I suspect that RG3 will win the job, as he has had the vast majority of the 1st team snaps. That should not be a surprise to anyone who is following Browns camp so far.

McCown is a freakin' stud. So happy to have this guy on the squad. Just a selfless, team-oriented player.

I listened to Josh in some interview on the Browns radio show with Zegura and crew...I really like the guy. I know it is all about getting something, but I wouldn't mind keeping him the entire season.

I agree. McCown is the consummate professional. He's tough not to like. Great teammate.

I had respect for McCown ever since his helicopter move against the Jets. Yea, he fumbled, but right away he earned his no fear card.

I'd like to keep him as well.

There is no doubt in my mind we keep him.
At worst, he's a very solid backup.

There are stories out there to the contrary.. That he is indeed doing well and has taken on the leadership role well. Check out the video on the main site where Hue says the QB room is special..

I can see this and that is how I think Ogbah will be used. When I was pimping him before the draft, that is what I was thinking of. I know some might think that is a limited role, but it really isn't.

I also think that Nassib will be used in nickel situations as an INSIDE pass rusher, rather than as an edge rusher.

I get your point, but I like seeing a 65% completion rate from RGIII. Much better than Mccowen's 59% over a larger sampling. We know what McCown looks like, so that gives us somewhat of a yardstick. Also, what matters most to me is that RGIII is making 65% percent of his throws within this system, whatever those throws may be. Also, we've heard he wasn't looking very good early on, but is improving so his overall completion percentage may be cause for optimism, IMHO. I'm not all in yet, but I can't poo-poo the number.

I was just thinking that when his time is up, it might be advantageous to keep him on staff to work with the QBs.

I don't know if I've ever seen anyone get helicoptered that high.

I agree with this, and since teams play, mostly, nickle situations in the NFL, it would give Ogbah plenty if time on the field.

That's a funny video and all and I'm a let you finish but McCown didn't go any higher than the defender's shoulder. Plus he didn't fly as deep. His head hit the goal line.
