We will know for sure by the end of this summer or next. It has the potential to be catastrophic for all pregnant women or those planning a family.

U.S. Health Experts Debate Advice to Women Once Zika Virus Arrives

Following U.S. health officials' announcement earlier this week that the Zika virus can definitely cause birth defects, many of those same experts are now locked in an unprecedented debate.

Should government health-care officials recommend that American women delay getting pregnant in regions of the country once the mosquito-borne virus becomes active there?

Genetically Modified Mosquito Study in Florida to Halt Spread of Viruses Sparks Eco Debate

Florida residents are raising concerns about a proposed study using genetically modified mosquitoes designed to lower the populations of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the species known to spread Zika, dengue and Chikungunya viruses.

The proposed trial would allow the release the specially designed mosquitoes from the British company Oxitec in order to disrupt the breeding of the insects and hopefully lower the population, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA said last month there was "low" probability of adverse effects on humans or animals as a result of the proposed trial.

Called OX513A mosquitoes, the insects are genetically modified so that the males have a specific protein that kills any offspring they have with females in the wild. Only males insects will be used in this test. Only female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes bite and draw blood, which helps them produce eggs.

That's due to the law of unintended consequences. I read a report early on that the mosquitoes carrying Zika were genetically modified to hunt other mosquitoes. I don't know if that report was true or not.

I was wondering if there was going to be a post about this. I just saw it on the news.

Pretty scary if you are a pregnant lady in Florida. I wonder how long it will take to get to Georgia.

They need a vaccine for this already.

I told her...Oh wait the mosquito...Wipe them out... the bats can eat the flies that get on my burgers... and the fish can eat the worms on the end of my hook....

It's interesting how the news media comes up with these "Crises" every few years.

Of course they're helped by the "researchers" who profit by these diseases.

There's ~ 319 million people in the US.

There's hardly a sentence on the 30,000+ people who die each year in car accidents in the US.

That's 600 people every week. Without regard to age, health, habits, race, religion, sex, location. 600 people who are alive right now will be dead by next Friday. Then another 600, then another. Every week of every year. 600 new people at random will die each and every week.

Something that can kill you, me, anyone on pretty much any day.

Could you imagine if a disease killed even 600 people?

There'd be headlines in every newspaper that we're all at risk.

Anyone who thinks Zika is a threat is niavete.

Your point is a valid one except a car accident is a risk we all take each day while getting bit on the arse while drinking a beer on a hot summers eve, by a tiny bug, and dying or having a kid with a shrunken head is terrifying!!! willynilly

quote by 40:

"...having a kid with a shrunken head is terrifying!!!"

Classic niavete.

Why?

1) How many deformed heads? 5, 10, 200? They sure look "TERRIFYING!!!" on the front page of the newspaper. 80% of everyone who contracts Zika have no symptoms.

2) 600 people will die next week in car accidents in the US. Over 1,000 will seriously injured. Many of those injuries will be horrifying.

I think you know I could post countless disturbing photos of accident victims much more grotesque than any Zika pictures.

Sure, I don't want a kid with a deformed head from Zika.

Probably a 1 out of 100 million chance. (but the newspapers make it seem like 1 out of 100 - look at your own comment of getting Zika while drinking a beer - ain't gonna happen unless MAYBE you're drinking beer for a month in a filthy, polluted, mosquito-infested swamp in El Salvador (no OFF allowed))

Actually, the mosquito that carries Zika prefers to feed from the wrists and ankles. If you rub lavender on those areas, it will deter them from biting. Lavender sprays work well also.

Could you imagine a disease that killed almost 3,000 people each and every single day? 365 days a year. Just think of the out cry from that. It would be plastered all over the TV, radio, internet. On every newspaper and in every magazine. Americans would be in a panic trying to do anything and everything to stop this dreaded disease at all costs.

Now lets make up a innocent sounding name for this disease like ummmm I don't know maybe abortion.

and watch folks tell you to mind your own business, yawn and walk away like it never happened. notallthere

Florida confirmed Monday 10 more homegrown cases of Zika in people infected by local mosquitoes, leading federal health officials to advise women who are pregnant to avoid the area just north of downtown Miami where Zika is spreading.

Women who have visited the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami since June 15 should avoid getting pregnant for at least eight weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Zika, which can cause devastating birth defects, appears to have begun spreading among mosquitoes in this area around June 15.

CDC officials believe this is the first time that the federal health agency has warned people to avoid a community in the continental U.S., said agency spokesman Tom Skinner.

At Florida's request, the CDC is sending an emergency response team to the state to help control the outbreak. Two CDC staff are already working in Florida, with six more planning to join them.

The new Zika cases in Miami bring the number of Zika infections spread by local mosquitoes — as opposed to foreign travel — to 14.

Controlling the cluster of Zika cases is proving difficult, CDC director Tom Frieden said, noting that more diagnoses related to the neighborhood are possible.

"We don't have ideal ways to control the mosquitoes that control Zika," Frieden said. "In Miami, aggressive mosquito control measures don't seem to be working as well as we would have liked."

Here's a potential solution.
I heard this about 2 years ago, and it's super-timely now.

It's still in the testing phase, but seems very hopeful.

20 minutes. Entertaining, and informative:
KILL THEM ALL!!!

13 minutes. This one has pictures that move:

I got bit by a spider this last week. Had a spot on my side about the size of a silver dollar. Swollen, red, itchy. I think it laid eggs in me.

Also, got bit by black flies. 1, or 2, or 3 got me on my foot. They don't just bite, they take a hunk of flesh. I was bleeding. Then my foot swelled up. Even had a blister from them.

Stuff happens. I once had 6 ticks on me. Know what ticks carry? Lyme disease, and a bunch of things I can't even spell right now.

Has anyone been paying attention to the drug resistant TB outbreaks in the areas that the feds have sent SOTB illegals? Once again, unregulated immigration is the easiest way to spread disease and kill a population.

http://yournewswire.com/is-zika-virus-or-the-dtap-vaccine-causing-birth-defects-in-brazil/

This is an interesting article. Please read.

The Brazilian government declared an emergency in December after 2,400 babies were found to be born with shrunken heads and brain defects believed to be linked to mosquitoes carrying the Zika Virus. The number of babies born with the defects has been rising significantly since then.

But could there be a link between the introduction of the Tdap vaccination that women in Latin America were urged to get before they were 22 weeks pregnant, and the birth of babies with these deformities called “Microcephaly” (literally ‘tiny head’)?

The following is an article from Brazilian shrunken head babies blog:

In late 2014, the Ministry of Health of Brazil announced the introduction of the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine for all pregnant women in that country as part of its routine vaccination program. The move was aimed at trying to contain the resurgence of pertussis in Brazil.

The research on this could be interesting. Did the vaccine change the virus, did the virus mutate on it's own, did they get shipped a bad vaccine, or does the timing of the vaccine cause the issue? For that matter, what are the variables I haven't thought of?

Holy crap dude. That's almost worst case scenario right there.
