RG3 threw 3 times as many passes as McCown, and so did Kessler ... hmm

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Robert Griffin completed 12-of-19 passes, including two touchdown passes as he gets close to be named the starting quarterback.

COLUMBUS--Robert Griffin threw two touchdowns to Terrelle Pryor and Duke Johnson,Jr. as Griffin III gets closer to nailing down the Browns starting quarterback position. Griffin III unofficially was 12-of-19 with two touchdowns and no interceptions in front of 42,310 fans at Ohio Stadium as the Brown team knocked off the White team, 23-6.
Hue Jackson was asked if he's ready to name Griffin III as the starter.
“Oh, I’m close," Jackson said after the scrimmage "Very close. We’ll know here pretty soon exactly what we’re doing. I’m going to go back and talk to the people that I trust and that I spend a lot of time with making these kind of decisions, and we’ll move forward.”
That decision could come as early as Monday ad the Browns open the preseason next Friday night at Green Bay. The Browns are off Sunday and return to practice Monday.
Jackson said he's happy with Griffin III's progression.
“I think I’ve said everything every day that everyone is seeing him get better and better every day," he said. "I’m not surprised. We try to create the right environment for him to be all he can be, and he’s working extremely hard because this is something he really wants to do. Obviously, we still have work to do, but I think he’s done a great job thus far. There are still some ladders to climb, and we’re going to keep climbing them.”
Jackson said Griffin III's confidence is being restored after not playing a snap last year in Washington.
“I think the biggest area he has grown is just his confidence in playing the position," he said. "You have to know how to play quarterback in the National Football League, and with (associate head coach – offense) Pep (Hamilton) and myself, we pride ourselves on getting guys ready to play.
"He has accepted every challenge we’ve given him – all of our quarterbacks have – and I know this is about Robert, but I think all of our quarterbacks have done that. I think they’ve all gotten better."
Griffin III thinks he has the confidence, but there's more to it.
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s really about my mindset or mentality," he said. "It’s really about just what our offense is running. It’s to give everyone confidence. When you know what you’re doing, you can play confidently. When you know what to expect and you know where to go with the ball and what Coach and how he wants to play the game, how we want to play the game, it’s easy to go out and execute.
"That’s just getting a better understanding of what Coach is expecting, what he wants and why is he calling that play, why is he calling that play and then you can master the system," he said. "You can go out and lead drives. It’s been really fun to just work with everybody through this whole process.”
Extra Points
Coleman Dinged: After a big night Friday, WR Corey Coleman didn't take part in the scrimmage. He came out for warmups before the scrimmage, but was held out after experiencing some tightness in his hamstring.
“He’ll be fine," Jackson said. "He just had a little hamstring issue, and I just didn’t want to push it too far. We’re too close to getting ready for the season. He could have been out here if I wanted him to. It’s important to take care of our players and protect them that way.”
Drango Impressing: Rookie OL Spencer Drango continues to impress and is getting reps with the first team at right tackle.
“He’s working at it," Jackson said. "He’s one of our young players who I’m excited about. I think he has a bright future here, but as I said to all of you guys, we’re still going to continue to search and find the best five linemen up there for our football team. I think the key to our football team will be our lines, offensively and defensively. If we can continue to improve and get better, then we’ll have a chance to be where we want to be.”
Erving's Return: Jackson said that he expects OL Cameron Erving to return to practice soon.
“He will be," he said. "Oh yeah, Cam will be back very soon.”
Erving has been out since Tuesday after injuring his elbow. OL Garth Gerhart has been playing in his place.
Hughes Absent: DL John Hughes has missed the past four days for personal reasons.
Sitting Out: WR Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), WR Josh Gordon (quad), DB Joe Haden (ankle), DB Trey Caldwell (hamstring), FB Malcolm Johnson (concussion), OL Kyle Rose (leg), DL Nile Lawrence-Stample , OL Cameron Erving (elbow), TE Randall Telfer (hamstring) and TE Seth DeValve (hamstring) all sat out the scrimmage.
McCown ends Well: QB Josh McCown had an interception on his first series by DB Tracy Howard. He finished well with a 75-yard strike to WR Terrelle Pryor down the sideline for a touchdown. McCown was 3-5 unofficially with a touchdown and an interception. QB Austin Davis and QB Cody Kessler each led the White team to field goals by K Travis Coons, from 31- and 35-yards.
Payton Progressing: Rookie WR Jordan Payton had a nice 55-yard catch and run in Friday night's scrimmage and had a 26-yard catch from Griffin III to set up WR Terrelle Pryor's five-yard touchdown.
Nice Move: The Browns presented a check for $25,000 to two Columbus High Schools, Linden McKinley and West High to purchase five-start helmets for their football program.

5 things to know from the Orange and Brown Scrimmage

Posted 4 hours ago

Patrick MaksStaff WriterTwitter

The Browns continued camp at Ohio Stadium

COLUMBUS — Robert Griffin III’s passes were crisp and his decisions appeared sharp Saturday afternoon, as the Browns held their second-annual Orange and Brown Scrimmage here before a lively and energetic crowd.

And Griffin, who enters his first season in Cleveland following four years with the Redskins, spoke of leadership and playing with confidence as he vies to be the Browns starting quarterback.

“You don’t try to lead. Those words don’t go together. You just lead,” he said following the team’s eighth day of training camp.

“It’s something that comes natural. Guys are going to look to you. At the quarterback position, you have to have those qualities. It’s not about trying to lead. It’s about just going and doing it.”

Here are four other things to know from Columbus.

No starter at QB...yet

Speaking of Griffin and quarterbacks, Jackson said the Browns haven’t made a decision on who will be the team’s starter at quarterback, though they could be near a consensus.

“Oh, I’m close. Very close,” Jackson said, laughing. “We’ll know here pretty soon exactly what we’re doing. I’m going to go back and talk to the people that I trust and that I spend a lot of time with making these kind of decisions, and we’ll move forward.”

Jackson, who said last week he’d like to name a starter before the preseason opener Friday at Green Bay, has been adamant Cleveland makes the “right decision” at quarterback. Because of that, the Browns have approached the past few months with careful and measured evaluation.

“It’s just about coming out every day and proving it. We want to make sure that everybody earns their spot, earns their keep, and that’s everybody’s goal,” Griffin said. “Every time they step out on the field, they want to put their best foot forward and show coach what they can do. He believes in all of us, so it’s a lot of fun to go out every day and just prove it.”

Pryor makes most of homecoming
In his second appearance at Ohio Stadium since starring at quarterback for the Buckeyes from 2008-10, Browns wide receiver Terrelle Pryorshined in his Columbus homecoming, catching two touchdown passes that brought the crowd to its feet.

“He’s done a tremendous job. There are a lot of guys that I can say that about, but he’s definitely one. He has taken this opportunity and he’s trying to make the most of it,” Jackson said, adding, “I think we see the fruit of his hard work. That’s what it is. He’s worked extremely hard and that’s what you see.”

Pryor, who seems poised to play a big role on the Browns offense next season, played down the buzz surrounding his impressive outing.

“We have special group – our offensive line, running backs. Corey Coleman had a great day yesterday. Somedays, other guys have great days. It’s just how we operate,” he said.

“For myself, just to make plays is coaches calling the right calls and the QBs putting the ball where it’s supposed to be. That’s it. I’m just doing my job. That’s my one-11th is to make a play when the ball is in the air, and that’s it.”

Reflecting on Coleman’s big Friday night
Though Corey Coleman sat out the scrimmage for precautionary reasons (hamstring), the rookie Browns receiver was still a much-talked about subject in Columbus following an impressive showing Friday night.

“He’s got dynamic ability. His speed and the way he tracks the ball is incredible. He’s a strong kid, a confident kid,” Griffin said.

“You just have to keep working with him. He is a rookie, but he’s not playing like one. We want that to continue when the lights come on and the live bullets start to fly. We’ll stay on Corey, and Corey is going to stay on himself. He’ll be a pro about it.”

Offensive firepower
While Pryor stole the spotlight Saturday, Jackson said what’s encouraging about the Browns offense is the number of capable playmakers who might be able to shine on any given afternoon.

Asked if the Browns put Pryor in position to star in front of Ohio State fans, Jackson shook his head and smiled.

“No, you know what’s interesting – one night it could be this guy, the next night it could be that guy,” he said. “No, he wasn’t. We didn’t set it up that way. Obviously, that’s the way it’s going to be for our football team.

“One day, it might be Corey (Coleman), another day it, might be Terrelle and the next day it might be Hawk (veteran receiver Andrew Hawkins). It could be a lot of different people, and that’s the fun part about our offensive football team. We have some guys that can make some plays.”

On-field observations from the Orange and Brown scrimmage

Browns soak up ‘unbelievable’ atmosphere in Columbus

COLUMBUS -- With years of experience in the AFC North, Hue Jackson knew all about the passionate Browns following in Cleveland.

For him to see the team’s reach beyondNortheast Ohio, he had to experience it to really believe it.

Saturday was that day.

Jackson called the turnout of 42,310 fans at Ohio Stadium for the second Orange and Brown Scrimmage “unbelievable.”

“What a great environment,” Jackson said. “More so than that, what a tremendous turnout by our fans. That says a lot about the following of the Browns. I know we have tremendous fans, but I never knew they traveled all over the place. That’s really great.

“I’ve never been a part of anything like this. I thank our fans. I thank them for coming out and our administration for having this day down here. It’s tremendous. It gives us a chance to get away. I think it’s a lot of fun. I think our players enjoyed it more than anything.”

Terrelle Pryor, the lone Buckeye on Cleveland’s roster, called the atmosphere “electric” at the end of a day in which he caught two touchdown passes.

“I’m sure there are a lot of Buckeye fans here, Browns fans,” Pryor said. “Hopefully, it’s the upcoming of what’s possibly to be.”

Quarterback Robert Griffin III never got a shot to play at The Horseshoe during his Baylor days but was able to relish the atmosphere on a warm and sunny Saturday in Columbus.

“College football was a very fun time for everybody that is in the pros now, so you get to come back to a stadium like this in a place that is as historic as Ohio State, it’s pretty cool,” Griffin said. “I know Terrelle was excited to come back.”

-- Some highlights from the scrimmage included:
• Griffin connected with Pryor on numerous occasions, including three times on the first series and a short touchdown pass in the first half.

• The longest offensive play of the scrimmage came on the last play of the scrimmage, as Pryor hauled in a 75-yard pass from Josh McCown for a touchdown.

• Undrafted rookie free agent Tracy Howard intercepted McCown during Saturday’s first half.

• RB Duke Johnson Jr. capped a scoring drive when he snagged a 9-yard Griffin pass down the seam and scooted into the end zone.

• Both kickers Patrick Murray and Travis Coons made the field goals they attempted.

• Darius Jennings appeared to have a nice kickoff return lined up but it’s unclear how far he would have gone if the scrimmage was live.

-- One day after corralling three long catches, including a touchdown, at Friday’s scrimmage, rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman sat out Saturday’s action with a sore hamstring.

Jackson said Coleman could have played if necessary but didn’t feel the need to rush anything with the team’s top pick from the 2016 NFL Draft.

“It’s important to take care of our players and protect them that way,” Jackson said.

-- Pro Bowl tight end Gary Barnidge got his first significant 11-on-11 work of training camp Saturday. He’s been active in a variety of areas throughout training camp as he recovers from sports hernia surgery.

Tight ends coach Greg Seamon said last week he expects Barnidge to receive some playing time during the preseason.

-- Jackson said he expects center Cameron Erving to return to practice soon. Erving has been sidelined since the middle of Tuesday’s practice with an elbow injury.

-- Fifth-round offensive lineman Spencer Drango continued his work with the first-team offense at right tackle. Drango spent time at the position during OTAs and mini-camp before beginning training camp as a second-team left tackle. Since Drango made the move, free agent signing Alvin Bailey, who previously held the first-team right tackle spot, has worked primarily at right guard.

Jackson said Drango is one of the players he is “excited about” and believes he has a “bright future” with the Browns.

“We’re still going to continue to search and find the best five linemen up there for our football team,” Jackson said. “I think the key to our football team will be our lines, offensively and defensively. If we can continue to improve and get better, then we’ll have a chance to be where we want to be.”

-- The Browns are off Sunday and will return to the practice field Monday in Berea for an afternoon practice. It’s the first of three in a row before the team travels to Green Bay for their preseason opener.
