I thought the scrimmage was tomorrow night at OSU

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I see this defense giving up the most points in the AFC.
The ends are too light for the 3-4.
Very porous pass rushers
Unproven safeties that haven't shown much
I see this defense getting a overhaul in 2017

After 1 week of camp it looks like the team is fairly comfortable with the OL prospects and more concerned with the DL prospects.

May I ask how you drew that conclusion?

I don't play the stat game much, but all you have to do is a quick search and see how bad last year's defense was.

Additionally, and I don't care what anyone says, we got worse by losing Gipson, Dansby and Whit.

Our secondary is probably the worst in the entire NFL. T. Williams got fried last year. Badly. Joe Haden sucked when he did play. Our backup corners were continually fried.

Our inside linebackers are dreadful. They are terrible at shedding blocks and defending the inside run game.

Who is our big sack guy? Ehhhh........

Horton talks a lot, but the last time he was here his teams sucked on 3rd down and late in games. The pressure started off okay, but was nonexistent towards the end of the year. His players quit on him late in the year. He was pushed aside for LeBeau in Tenn.

This team lacks talent. That's my take.

Where do you think the defense will finish overall?

The DEs being too light depends on which DEs you are referring to. I don't buy for a second that Ogbah is going to 'move to 5-tech'. Nor do I think Nassib will be a fulltime 5-tech either.
I think their 5-tech will you know be the actual 5-techs on the roster: Hughes, Meder, Hayden, Stample.
Now, to be clear I am not saying those 5-techs are going to be good. I'm only saying that 'size' isn't necessarily the issue.
I can see giving Cooper a shot at 5-tech, often times 3-tech skillset DL can become good 5-tech DEs. It will be interesting to see how Cooper performs there he IF he's good there it would help a lot.

Pass rush is going to be a question mark, I agree.
Browns were 28th in sacks with only 29.
They brought in some rookie pass rushing talent in Ogbah and Nassib. (aside from scheme changes) Those rookies will have a big say in how the pass rush performs.

Safeties are unproven. Don't know much about Poyer....Watched some of Campbell in college i think he'll be a good player. But who knows *shrugs*. He's a solid tackler with better coverage speed/range then Whitner.

I don't know how else to quantify what you mean by terrible without a reference point. You're probably right to think the defense will be bad. I'm just trying to figure out how you view it...league worst bottom 5-10?

Quote:

How the secondary play is gonna be impacted greatly by which Joe Haden shows up. I agree the 2015 Joe Haden wasn't good but historically there's as much reason to believe Joe will be good as there is to believe he'll be bad. And good Joe Haden changes the complexion of the secondary.

Quote:

I agree here. I think they are playing 2 of the same style of ILB. Both are WILB, run and chase/hit guys. Neither is particularly strong in the run game, neither are 'thumper' SILB that come downhill and stack and shed blocks easily. The odd thing is that they have 2 dudes on the roster in Joe Shobert and Scooby Wright that are exactly that SILB type.

Quote:
Who is our big sack guy? Ehhhh........
Nah, I'm with on this one too there currently isn't a premiere pass rusher on this team.

How often will the two inside linebackers even be on the field at the same time?

Nickel is the new base.

You're preaching to the choir about nickel defense. However; there is still about 40% of snaps in base and if you can't stop the run you'll never get to your nickel package.

We won't be able to stop the run or the pass, it will confuse teams into not knowing what to do (theoretically). We have tried this strategy before and it didn't work.

Sure. A Olineman retired and we replaced him with a Dlineman.
I didn't think it was that hard.

I suppose of all the free agent players out there, this dude might be the very best available. Something tells me not. Something tells we we are looking to address a need....

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I cant be specific on stuff a exact finish but I'm gonna guess it make look like this

I see a young defense that may get better as the season goes on. But out the gate it will struggle
I'm in the minority with Horton.
I don't think he's a very good DC.
He had a defense with establish players in his last tenure as Browns DC and they still couldn't get off the field on 3rd down and their red zone defense was porous
Now he has a young defense that will struggle with getting
On the same page.
I expect offenses to have their playbook totally open
With the Browns
They will be able to run or throw at least in the 1st half
Of the season.
TEs like Eifert...Reed..are gonna kill these OLBs.
Qbs like Big Ben are gonna take shots down field at the safeties.
The vets on this defense has already reached their talent
Ceiling
Haden isn't getting better. Williams got roasted last yr.
Kirksey still can't thump.
Demario Davis was allowed to walk for a reason
Mingo is soft as pudding.
I dare someone to say this is top 10 defense.
I expect this defense to allow high QB ratings and Rbs to average 4.0 ypc.
Now if the offense can put points up and the special teams can create shorter fields yeah then that will help the d out.
But if this offense can't stay on the field and score
This defense will be in the bottom of all defensive
Rankings

RG3, Corey Coleman come up big in scrimmage

FRED GREETHAM9:04 PM

Robert Griffin III and Corey Coleman hooked up early and often in Friday nights practice that was more of an intrasquad scrimmage.

BEREA, Ohio--It was a great start. Quarterback Robert Griffin III hooked up on the second play of the scrimmage on a long pass play down the sideline to Corey Coleman. Before the night was through, the former Baylor stars hooked up on on three pass plays of 35-,53- and 41 yards unofficially, including a touchdown.

Hue Jackson liked the big play ability of the offense in the first scrimmage situation.

“Outstanding," he said. "I keep saying and you guys keep watching Robert (Griffin III) get better and better and better right before your eyes. He’s no different than any other player I’m coaching. There’s an expectation that I have for that position and how they play. There’s an expectation for the line, defense or offense. Our guys have to meet that expectation, and I think he’s trying. That’s all you can ask for. He’ll keep growing and going after it, and good things are going to happen."

He also likes what he saw of Coleman.

“Yeah, well that’s what he does," Jackson said. "He’s not doing anything that I’m surprised of. I said it before, that’s why we drafted him. He’s a tremendously talented young man. He’s got some growing to do so there are some things that he’s got to clean up and continue to get better at. He always finds a way to make a play.

"That’s what you’re looking for in a guy that has the opportunity to score the football like he does," he said. "Obviously, in order for him to catch those balls, there is some good protection going on, there is a good ball thrown and he is able to make some plays. He’s just got to continue to do that. That’s something that we’re counting on, but at the same time, there is a whole lot that goes into that.”

Griffin III bounced his first pass to Duke Johnson, Jr. but then unofficially completed his next six passes, not counting goal line situations. Griffin III threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Coleman and a five-yarded to tight end Connor Hamlett.

Jackson was impressed with Griffin III's deep passes, but most of all that Griffin III didn't turn the ball over.

“I think (the deep throws were) good, but I think the most important thing, Robert is protecting the football," he said. "That’s what’s going to give us the best chance to win games. I’m loving the big plays, and that’s what quarterbacks do in the National Football League, but what you have to do to be a winning quarterback is win. On top of that in order to win, you have got to be able to take care of the football. He’s done a good job with that. If we can do that, run the football and then make explosive plays like I think we can, then I think we’ve got a chance to be a decent offensive football team.”

Although Jackson likes what he's seen in Coleman, he said he still has room to grow.

“I don’t know that he does something spectacular that separates himself, but he’s just very, very talented," he said. "He can make contested catches. He has the ability to adjust to the ball in the air. He has the ability to make plays down the field. That’s what he did. He’s a fantastic player. I think we all recognize that, but again, he’s still a young player. We’re doing it in practice. I need to see him do it against competition and that’s when we’ll say, ‘OK, maybe he’s arrived,’ but he’s got a ways to go.

“Yeah, he knows how to score the football," he continued. "He knows how to get from here to there very fast and get the ball in the end zone. He’s proven that, but he’s got some things to clean up. Again, I don’t want to anoint this young man yet. It is way too soon. I’ll be the first to tell you that. Has he shown some very unquestionability? Yes he has. I want to give him that, but at the same, he knows there are some things I’m expecting him to get cleaned up here real fast in order to be the type of player I think he can be.”

Despite Jackson trying to keep Coleman humble, the rookie downplayed his production in the scrimmage when asked if it was his best practice.

“I really can’t say," he said. "If I don’t have a good practice, I have a bad day. I try to come in here, know what I have to do and practice on a level that I know I can practice on. Really just show the coaches that I can come in and play as a rookie.

"I think I did decent," Coleman said. "But there were some plays I messed up on and some plays that I did good on."
Coleman credited Griffin III with his development.

“Robert helps everybody out," he said. "He’s a great leader on this team. Even when I don’t know what to do sometimes, he helps me out getting plays. Really, he has the toughest job on offense, and he’s done a great job preparing himself and his mind to get the task done.”

Extra Points
Tramon's Pick: CB Tramon Williams intercepted a pass by QB Josh McCown to start McCown's second series. McCown completed a pass to WR Ranell Hall to start his drive, but then had a pass tipped. He threw another to Hall for 13 yards before getting sacked by LB Christian Kirksey.

Sitting Out: Not participating in the scrimmage were: TE Seth Devalve (hamstring), TE Randall Telfer (hamstring), DB Trey Caldwell (hamstring), WR Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), OL Kyle Rose (leg), WR Josh Gordon (quad), DB Joe Haden (ankle) and OL Cameron Erving (elbow). WR Taylor Gabriel (heat) and WR Marlon Moore (heat) were back practicing after leaving practice Thursday due to heat. FB Malcolm Johnson (concussion) is still in the concussion protocol. DL John Hughes (personal) missed his second day of practice.
Moves:The Browns signed DL Kenton Adeyemi and pllaced OL Michael Bowie on reserve/retired. FB Patrick Skov, who was waived/injured, went unclaimed and reverted to the Browns’ injured reserve list.

O-H-I-O: The Browns will travel to Columbus for the Orange and Brown scrimmage from 3-5:30 pm Saturday at Ohio Stadium before taking Sunday off.

On-field observations from Day 7 of Browns training camp

Andrew GribbleSenior Staff Writer@Andrew_Gribble

Corey Coleman bright spot on offense, but good day for defense

Hue Jackson walked around a horde of reporters before stepping in front of the podium. He paused for a second, looked up and smiled.

“That was fun,” Jackson said after a Friday practice that had nearly an hour of live, 11-on-11 play between the offense and defense.

There were big plays on offense, especially when Robert Griffin III was looking for rookieCorey Coleman, and some impressive defensive stops against the run. It’s exactly what the coach wanted to see on the eve of Saturday’s Orange and Brown Scrimmage in Columbus.

“The other day, the offense kind of got off to a fast start against the defense – had them on their heels. It flipped,” Jackson said. “Today the defense got off to a fast start, kind of had the offense on their heels. For me, like I told our team, that’s the makings of a good football team. If the offense is always dominating the defense, or the defense is always dominating the offense, then we’ve got a problem.

“What I saw over the last couple of days, was a team that’s becoming a team.”

Here’s what else happened on a warm and sunny evening in Berea.

-- It took two plays for Coleman to make an impact on Friday’s 11-on-11 session.

Working against the second-team defense, Coleman made a double move and hauled in a well-placed ball from Robert Griffin III for a long gain. Later in the scrimmage, he hauled in an even longer pass while guarded by veteran Tramon Williams and then capped his performance with his deepest catch in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

“Well, that’s what he does,” Jackson said. “He’s not doing anything that I’m surprised of. I’ve said it before, that’s why we drafted him. He’s a tremendously talented young man. He’s got some growing to do, so there’s some things that he’s got to clean up and continue to get better at. He always finds a way to make a play. That’s what you’re looking for in a guy that has the opportunity to score the football like he does.”

As for Coleman? He called the performance “decent” and stressed his focus was on maintaining the consistency that’s served him well through the first week of practice.

Music to Jackson’s ears.

“He knows there are some things I’m expecting him to get cleaned up here real fast in order to be the type of player I think he can be,” Jackson said.

-- In order for Coleman to make those big plays, he needed the ball in a good place. All three of them came from Griffin, who put some nice touch on his passes on an evening in which he kept the ball on his side of the field.

“I keep saying and you guys keep watching Robert get better and better and better right before your eyes,” Jackson said. “He’s no different than any other player I’m coaching. There’s an expectation that I have for that position and how they play. There’s an expectation for the line, defense or offense. Our guys have to meet that expectation, and I think he’s trying. That’s all you can ask for.

“He’ll keep growing and going after it, and good things are going to happen.”

-- Coleman’s second big catch set up the first-team offense’s first touchdown. On third-and-goal, Griffin lofted a pass only tight end Connor Hamlett could nab for the score.

Some other big plays included a long catch-and-run from rookie Jordan Payton, who broke a tackle after hauling in a pass from Austin Davis. Davis also threw a touchdown pass to rookie tight end J.P. Holtz, and Josh McCown connected with rookie Ricardo Louis on a long touchdown pass.

-- The double-edged sword of practicing against each other is when one side thrives, the other side comes away with plenty to fix.

On Friday, that was the Browns’ running game.

“I didn’t like it. I’ll be the first to tell you I didn’t like it,” Jackson said. “I liked the second part of it. There were a couple of times that (RB Isaiah Crowell) had some good runs. We have got to get our pads down. I think what it was is that our defense said, ‘Forget you, we’re not letting you run it today.’ That’s going to happen. We play in the AFC North. There are some really good defensive football teams. They’re not going to just let you walk out there and just walk up and down the field. We have got to become a gritty group up front.”

-- Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and former NFL star Desmond Howard were among those watching from the sidelines Friday. Matthews’ son, Mike, was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May. He’s primarily worked at center.

5 things to know from Day 7 of Browns training camp

Corey Coleman flashes potential, Tramon Williams heaps praise on Ray Horton, Isaiah Crowell sizes up expectations

The seventh day of the Browns training camp was filled with big plays, plenty of hitting and a live 11-of-11 scrimmage that should give Cleveland an idea of what kind of team it’s got heading into the preseason.

From Corey Coleman’s big night to Tramon Williams’ thoughts on the Browns new-look defense, here are five things to know from Friday night’s practice.

Corey Coleman flashes potential, but Browns won’t ‘anoint’ him quite yet

Friday night offered a glimpse into the kind of potential rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman offers the Browns. The first-round draft pick from Baylor found himself on the receiving end of a handful of big plays, including a long touchdown pass from quarterback Robert Griffin III.

“That’s what he does. He’s not doing anything that comes as a surprise, I’ve said it before, that’s why we drafted him,” Jackson said. “He’s a tremendously talented young man and he’s got some growing to do.”

Indeed, Jackson made it clear Coleman’s acclimation process to the NFL is still a work in progress.

“I don’t want to anoint this young man yet, it’s way too soon and I’ll be the first to tell you that. Has he shown some very unquestioned ability? Yes he has. So I want to give him that,” he said.

“But at the same time, he knows there’s some things I’m expecting him to get cleaned up real fast in order for him to be the type of player he can be.

Coleman, who fielded questions from reporters following the session, offered a similar take on his performance.

“I think I did decent,” he said. “There were some plays I messed up on and some plays I did good on.”

Coleman, asked what he needs to improve on, added: “I’d say as a rookie, and for all the rookies, (it’s) the playbook. Some stuff is difficult but you just have to stay in that playbook and really focus and take pride in studying that thing because that can keep a lot of people from not playing.”

Tramon Williams heaps praise on Browns DC Ray Horton

Now entering his second season in Cleveland, cornerback Tramon Williams reflected on a defense that defensive coordinator Ray Horton likened to a “kaleidoscope” on Thursday. Most of all, the veteran zeroed in on Horton, who returns to the Browns after two seasons with the Titans, and the connection he’s made with the players.

“The guy has been in this league, he’s been a defensive coordinator for a lot of different teams and pretty much top-10 (defense) everywhere he’s been,” Williams said.

“And he’s played the game, he’s played the game. He understands the players and anything that we like, we go to him and tell him and anything we don’t like, he won’t call. For a player, that’s big. So I like the chemistry with the coaches that we have.”

Crow reflects on growth, expectations

While the Browns run game sputtered Friday night, third-year running back Isaiah Crowellcontinued what’s been a strong training camp.

“I feel like I’ve gotten off to a good start in camp,” Crowell said. “I feel like I still have a long way to go. A lot of work to be put in.”

After all, the Browns aim to have a run-oriented offense and he and Duke Johnson Jr. are expected to play key roles in making that happen.

“We’ve got to become a gritty group up front and find a way to make the run game go,” Jackson said Friday. “And we will. I feel very confident about that.”

This past spring, Jackson said the pair of backs are as “as good as I’ve seen in a while. Their talent is extreme.”

Crowell said that belief motivates him.

“I appreciate that and that brings confidence because that lets me know my coach believes in me,” he said, “and I know I have what it takes and I’m looking forward to it.

‘He makes playing football so much fun’

One name that might be flying under some radars is second-year wide receiver Rannell Hall. The speedy Central Florida standout has looked sharp thus far in training camp and said on Cleveland Browns Daily on Friday he hopes to continue that momentum into the preseason.

“I’ve always been confident and comfortable thanks to the coaches and the players who have all been helping one another,” he said. “Every day I just come out and give 100 percent effort and just show my God-given ability.”

In particular, Hall heaped praise on senior offensive assistant/wide receivers coach Al Saunders, the longtime coach who enters his first year in Cleveland.

“Before we even got to the facility, just talking to him over the phone, just a positive guy with so much knowledge for him to come back and coach with us and share that knowledge, it’s so fun,” Hall said. “He makes playing football so much fun, just like the younger days.”

Desir learning at safety

Browns defensive back Pierre Desir on Thursday described his first three years in the NFL as a “learning experience.” Now, Cleveland has him learning a new position as the Browns have him testing the waters at safety.

“I think the last time I played safety was freshman year of high school,” said Desir, who started six games at corner last season. “After that, I played corner and wide receiver. It’s definitely new.”

But Desir said he’s embraced the move. “When I heard about the switch, I always feel that the more you can do, the better,” he said. “Whether they want me to play corner or safety, I’m just going to do whatever I can to help the team.”

The Browns — whose new-look defense is still taking shape — have said they’ll put players in position to be successful and, sometimes, that includes changing positions or learning a new one.

“We’re going to try to find a place for a lot of guys and see if maybe they are a little better here than they were there. That’s really important for our football staff is trying to improve guys and put them into position so that they can have success,” Jackson said.

“We like him. He’s long, talented, but maybe we might find a different area where he’s better suited to play. He has cover skills because he’s played corner quite a bit, but boy, to see him go in there and play safety, too, is exciting to me because he gives us a different element back there.”

Coleman sounds exciting, but who won't be our secondary this year?

Last year only two teams allowed less receiving yards to tight ends than us (the Cowboys and Patriots).

We don't know. It's training camp. Maybe our secondary is actually good or average and Coleman is still killing them?

On Justin Gilbert, Corey Coleman and more Cleveland Browns scrimmage observations

BEREA, Ohio -- Tramon Williams may have inadvertently sounded an alarm to Justin Gilbert on Friday night. In talking about the third-year cornerback and where he needed to make the biggest improvement from last season, the mental side of the game came up.

"I think he needed to grow mentally for sure," Williams said. "That's the toughest part of the game. Physically, we all can do it. There's a lot of good football players who are at home right now without opportunity. Physically, we all can do it. It's who can do it mentally. Who can stay in the game mental enough to come out and just able to make a career out of it, because a lot of guys can't do it."

The talk for Gilbert all offseason was about coming into this season with a clean slate. The disappointments of the last two seasons, on and off the field, were the past. This new regime is the future and the former No. 8 overall pick in the draft had an opportunity staring him in the face.

This, though, has been a rough week.

Rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman beat Gilbert earlier in the week for a long pass and the two exchanged words, getting separated by head coach Hue Jackson. Friday night saw Josh McCown throw multiple times at Gilbert during McCown's first series, completing two passes to Rannell Hall and misfiring on a third. Even when Gilbert had good coverage things didn't go his way.

"One of the balls that (quarterback) Robert (Griffin III) threw in the corner of the endzone was amazing," Williams said. He was referring to a deep touchdown pass that Coleman hauled in in the back corner of the endzone with Gilbert draped on him. "He was in great position. I told him to forget about that."

Forgetting is often the hard part but also the most important for a cornerback. Williams stood up for his embattled teammate.

"The ones that you don't want to live with are the ones that you just totally blow. You can't blow things, and he's not doing none of that," Williams said. "Most of the time, you watch the film, he's only a step away here or there and he's not in bad position, so I think he's progressing as a player."

Is he progressing quickly enough? Time can run out fast during training camp and the preseason.

The playmaker

Wide receiver Corey Coleman has been the undisputed star of training camp so far. He continued to shine on Friday night, including on that long touchdown catch.

"I just knew the situation..." Coleman said, "...and I wanted to keep us on the field, score a touchdown. We wasn't having a good drive. Think we had a penalty that drive, pushed us back, so I knew that I had to go up and make a play."

It's still too early to know how good Coleman will be in his first season, but it has been a long time since the Browns have had a player on offense that might be able to turn a scuffling drive into something -- maybe a *gasp* touchdown -- in a matter of seconds.

Odds and ends

*Taylor Gabriel is quietly having a nice camp. The third year undrafted free agent made a few nice catches on Friday. He has an uphill battle to make the roster in that crowded group, but he's played well.

*All four rookie wide receivers made plays on Friday night. Ricardo Louis made a catch in the front of the endzone. Jordan Payton had a long catch and run, breaking a tackle. Rashard Higgins made a nice play.

*Hue Jackson has to love the idea Connor Hamlett. He caught a touchdown pass Friday night. Hamlett is 6-foot-7 and looks every bit of it. Jackson loves tight ends and already has a good one in Gary Barndige, but he can never have too many.

*Paul Kruger had a nice start to the scrimmage. He batted a ball down at the line and made a nice play stretching out a run to the right side. Barkevious Mingo made a couple plays early as well.

*Spencer Drango told me in rookie minicamp he was going to compete at right tackle. Here he is, almost three months later, working with the first team.

#Browns QB Robert Griffin III completed 6 of 7 passes, excluding 2-minute drill, per my unofficial count.

" maybe our secondary is actually good or average"?

That's hard for me to believe because it would mean that players who've been with the Browns in the past and have shown need to improve would have taken steps forward in the same off season, when they weren't, and they each had the opportunity to, in the past.

precisely I'm saying.
Poyer, Gilbert, and Desir, and to a lesser extent, Tramon and K'waun,
would each have had to have delayed their improvement opportunities during the 2015 offseason, and 2015 regular season,

And all decided to wait until the 2016 offseason to take that leap forward with the level of their game, .. in unison. (coaching?? hmm maybe??)
Or the Browns found late round Gems, and these panned out, even though the average is about 16% of Browns draft picks taken later than 104th overall in the years since 2001. (about 1 out of 7, )

Or, that Jamar Taylor is the deciding factor.

Probably the more likely conclusion is the Browns secondary is going to be pretty pourous and struggle, and will greatly benefit from a healthy Joe Haden.
and benefit from depth of average backing up average.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
