Browns name Robert Griffin III starting QB Posted 7 minutes ago Andrew GribbleSenior Staff Writer@Andrew_Gribble Fifth-year signal-caller has shown constant improvement throughout training camp Robert Griffin III has been named the Browns starting quarterback, Hue Jackson announced Monday. Griffin III, who signed with the Browns in March after four seasons with the Washington Redskins, emerged from a four-man competition that included veteran Josh McCown, Austin Davisand rookie Cody Kessler. He’ll receive his first start Friday in Cleveland’s preseason opener at Green Bay. Jackson believes Griffin’s best football is ahead of him. "It's time. Robert has earned the right to be named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns," Jackson said. "Since he was signed back in March, Robert has made it clear through his actions that he is willing to do everything that has been asked of him to earn this role. Throughout this process he has gained the respect from his teammates, the coaching staff and the entire organization that is necessary for him to lead our offense and really the entire team. Pep (Hamilton) has done an outstanding job with that room to get us to this point so we can make this decision at what I feel is the optimal time which enables us to best prepare for the regular season. It's now on Robert to show the organization and our fans that this is the right decision. Throughout the offseason program and training camp, Robert has shown improvement every day and we expect him to continue to ascend as he becomes more and more acclimated to the offensive system we will employ this season. I've been crystal clear on what we expect from Robert. He fully understands the responsibility and I feel he is ready to handle this role." "I would be remiss if I didn't also commend Josh, Austin and Cody. Josh in particular has been outstanding throughout this process and all of our quarterbacks have worked well together. Their play, professionalism and work ethic has pushed the room to really improve the level of play at the position for our team." Since training camp opened last week, Griffin has primarily worked with the first-team offense. At Friday’s live, 11-on-11 scrimmage in Berea, he connected with rookie wide receiverCorey Coleman on multiple long passes, including one for a touchdown, and tossed a short touchdown pass to tight end Connor Hamlett. On Saturday at the Orange and Brown Scrimmage in Columbus, Griffin consistently moved the offense down the field and threw two touchdown passes. Griffin (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) is entering his fifth NFL season out of Baylor. Originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick in 2012, Griffin has appeared in 37 games with 35 starts. He has completed 679 of 1,063 passes (63.9 percent) for 8,097 yards with 40 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 90.6 rating and added 1,480 career rushing yards with eight scores. Griffin set NFL rookie records for passer rating (102.4), interception percentage (1.27) and rushing yards by a quarterback (815) en route to being named 2012 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl selection. He led the Redskins to a 10-6 record and their first division title in 13 years. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/...5-e586c7bb04d4Starting 13 games in 2013, Griffin recorded a career-high 3,203 passing yards and became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to record 3,000 passing yards in each of his first two seasons. He started seven games in 2014 and registered 1,694 passing yards. Last season, he was inactive 15 games and dressed but did not play in another.

The writing was on the wall. glad they finally named a QB. I know some expect us not win at all or 2 games...my prediction is 6-10 or 7-9. Go Browns!!! I am dying for our first preseason game.
I bet you're wondering the samething I did, why O' why didn't I take the...blue pill

Whether he was the best in TC or not, this is no real surprise. We must determine this season whether RGIII is the guy long-term or not. I expect that next season's draft hinges upon his success (or not)...

No surprise here. Glad Hue named him right now. Hopefully RG3 doesn't play poorly in the preseason

Let's pray this works out - it would be huge if he returned to a Pro Bowl calibre level.

Grossi: I think RG3 has improved since day 1 of camp. He didn't look good in OTA but got better with more reps. #Browns https://twitter.com/ESPNCleveland/status/762652486666637313Wow. Even Grossi seems a bit hopeful.

Yeah, when Tony actually says something positive, you almost gotta buy into it. He ripped RG, I think the term he used was "underwhelming" and etc. I'm not saying we should judge our opinion on an usual grump of a beat writer, but it is what it is.

Not surprising but good that it's at least done. Now, let's move forward and get ready to play some football. Jackson kept to his word that he would name a starter before the first preseason game.

if he can trust and work from the pocket effectively i think he'll be pretty good, teams won't bet on him running, but when he does it will be more effective because he's proven he can throw from the pocket. We have quite of talent at WR/te now...its just a matter of how the rebuilt line holds up.. That to me is the biggest ? heading into the season

if my count is correct, he's the 14th different starting QB on opening day since 99

With Griffin, there certainly was mechanical work to fix. House and Dedeaux taught him—and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher echoed these words in a talk with Griffin later in the offseason—to view throwing like firing a gun, in emphasizing you won’t shoot straight from different slots. And the coaches also worked with Griffin in how his demeanor comes off around others, and made him more conscience of it. http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/08/03/tom-house-quarterback-nfl-training-camp-notes

Shocker. I hope that he becomes everything I thought he would be coming out of college.

I am glad Hue didn't prolong the decision or announcement. I wish RG3 well and hope he excels on his amazing rookie season. If both he and Cam Erving perform well our offense could be far better than most give us credit.

When was the last time we announced a starter so early? Jeff Garcia? Derrick Anderson's second year?

RG3 is not the same QB he was in OTA's and thats a great thing. He went out improved and was the Best QB on the field. I dont think we can ask for more than that. He earned the job. Its what we have all wanted.

No real surprise at this, except that we actually know this early. RG3 would have had to bomb on a historic level in order to not get the job at the outset.
I hope he works out for us and can let that position settle a little for a year or two.

Football like most things in life reflect the very basic principal of:
What you put in is what you get out.
There has been much written about Griffin since he was drafted into the NFL. Since his arrival in Cleveland there has been plenty of discussion about expectations.
Now Griffin gets to show what he can do.
As a Browns fan I stand behind him and wish him success.

The announcement could have just been made the day they signed him. They didn't just go sign "their guy" for him to sit. If they thought McCown could have been the guy they would of had no need to sign RG3 in the first place.
The writing was on the wall the day they signed him. Anyone who didn't see it was blind. I hope their reclamation project works out well for everyone concerned. Especially the fans.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I suspect that you are correct, Pit. Unless RGIII totally bombed out in TC/pre-season, he was going to be the starter...

Then there would have been the noise of statements like "he didnt earn it", "how could hue just give him the job", "McCown should have been given a chance", etc etc. Hue played it right. Good for the team to see that all positions you have to compete for, except Joe Thomas, which Hue has mentioned numerous times.

I didn't mean to imply that Hue should have actually have named him the starter the day they signed him. My implication is that pretty much everyone with at least half a brain knew that, like you said, unless RG3 simply imploded, we all knew he was going to be the starter the day they signed him.
