Browns are trading the sixth overall pick from the 2013 draft, LB Barkevious Mingo, to the New England Patriots, per source.

Had always hoped that Mingo would eventually work out but just never met expectations. Browns clearly saw enough.

I feel bad for Mingo. He came across as super nice and willing to work. Very willing to engage with media and fans.

Good luck, Mingo.

Oh Wow!

Within the past week, I was defending Mingo and said my fear was that we cut him and New England would pick him up and find a way to make him productive.

His contract is up at the end of the year. We likely weren't going to re-sign him. We have a bunch of draft picks that we would probably like to keep. Horton didn't like Mingo his first time around with the team. Mingo was not productive.

Bust.

Well done FO.... seems like Mingo was not going to make the 53 man roster. Getting anything for him was good business.

Do you have proof of that?

Here is one article on the two:

Quote:
Ray Horton: We’ll use Barkevious Mingo differently

Posted by Josh Alper on February 18, 2016, 2:08 PM EDT

During Ray Horton’s first stint as the defensive coordinator in Cleveland, he helped break linebacker Barkevious Mingo into the lineup after the Browns made Mingo the sixth pick in the 2013 draft.

Mingo had five sacks that season, but added just two over the next two seasons while playing a role less focused on rushing the passer for former coach Mike Pettine and defensive coordinator Jim O’Neill. The Browns reportedly dangled him in trade talks before last year’s deadline, but Horton said Thursday that Mingo’s very much in the team’s plans for next season.

Horton said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, those plans will be “different than in past. Got to use his God-given ability.” He didn’t specify exactly how the usage would be different, but he also said that the team “to give [linebacker Paul Kruger] help on the other side” as a pass rusher.

That desire and Mingo’s relative pass rushing success under Horton in the past would seem to give some idea about how the Browns want to use Mingo, who will need a strong season to turn around a career that’s fit right in with the recent trend of underperforming first-rounders in Cleveland.

Mingo was trash.

At least we get something. He wasn't cutting it, so a perfect time to cut ties, and it gives Mingo a possible chance elsewhere before the season starts.

Any idea what we got?

I never thought Mingo was great, but I thought he was a good teammate/role player. We do look to have a couple interesting young prospects at LB.

I always figured that New England would like Mingo and I believe they will be able to get production from him.

Too bad...

Its best for both Mingo and the Browns. The shoulder injury really killed him here, just never was able to finish the tackles he was in position to make. Pats are playing a lot more 4-3 these days and Mingo as a weakside backer in their scheme should be a good thing.

Maybe he'll play as a situational pass rusher? Don't the Pats predominately play a 43? Wonder if that means they'll try in as a 43 DE. Not sure that will work out.

New England plays both a 3-4 and a 4-3.

They are listed as a 4-3 team, but Belichick said that they change back and forth depending on the opponent.

In their scheme the WiL is asked to play a lot of coverage and occasionally blitz. Thats a better role for him.

NE traded Chandler Jones to Arizona. I'm wondering if they will use Mingo in a similar role as to the one Jones' had? Long, athletic, fast, agile guys.

Not sure, but that makes a bit of sense.

Total guess here but I’d think Pats sending a conditional 7th for Mingo and he’d have uphill battle to make team.

If indeed this takes place it is no surprise.

Just before his name was announced in the draft I was on the phone with my late best friend. My comment was "as long as it is not this guy Mingo."

When I watched him in college and during the draft process I never felt he had the full tool kit for the NFL.

He was a guy who was fast off the line but lacked power. My feeling was he would get swallowed up by NFL linemen.

You have to have more than a swim mover to the outside. NFL OL are very disciplined. They learn technique. They adjust to guys like Mingo.

In the end he became a coverage linebacker. That was all he could do.

He would have been cut. He was a poor draft pick like many others.

I get that. It's why I said predominately. I'm assuming they played the 43 more but recognize they switch it up.

Drafted as a pass rusher and consistently used as a cover backer. How they used him was as stupid as our drafting for the past decade.

Wow! Fantastic news!

Nothing against Mingo, but he just was never very good here. Definitely did not live up to expectations, and underperformed on some very bad teams.

Getting anything at this point is a bonus for us, I think.

Well as long as they didn't just send a picture of it on his phone.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

A bit off topic but someone asked me what defense would best suit the personnel we have and I gotta say the highschool 5-2 would probably suit what we have better. Get Shelton in the middle with Nassib n cooper flanking with Ogbah and Kruger on the outside. Get 2 of your fastest most instinctive linebackers to chase the ball. Hell i just want rid of the 3-4anyhway. lol

he wasn't going to make the team here anyways

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

What possibly could we have got for him? Did I read likely a conditional seventh rounder? Sounds fair. He'll likely have a suspension soon for juicing this offseason (no proof but come on, couldn't add a gram of weight in years and one offseason added pounds of lean mass, you know he was juicing), he never showed anything here outside raw speed and let's be honest and real - that draft class sucked.

But, I really hope him well. He seemed to be a very hard worker and a good kid. Good head on his shoulders.
