figured desire was gone when the move to safety was attempted

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Writing on the wall. I was really pulling for him, but after a position change and still being a 3rd stringer, this was rather imminent.

Gilbert should be relieved

How the heck Gilbert is still here just baffles me.

They must be seeing progress from Gilbert and the potential for more progress. I'm not sure I really see that, but then I see less from the rest of the bottom of the DB group.

Patterson can tackle, but his coverage is underwhelming.

Not sure I can find positives for any of the rest.

Howard tries hard?

Our DB coach feels he can make Gilbert into a good corner. He missed on a tackle in preseason and was beat over the top once, but he was having a decent showing when he had the concussion.

I just realized that they probably cannot cut/release him while he is in concussion protocol without reaching an injury settlement.

Titans cut 7th round CB Kalan Reed. I'd definitely want to give him a look over some of the guys we end up keeping in the secondary.

Browns release a pair of defensive backs

Posted by Zac Jackson on September 2, 2016, 4:49 PM EDT
Charles Gaines, Chris Thompson
AP
The Browns have released defensive backs Pierre Desir and Charles Gaines, per multiple reports.

As happens around the league, both players were drafted by a previous regime and released in the first year under a new regime. Desir had been working as a safety this summer after spending his first two seasons as a cornerback.

Desir was a fourth-round pick in 2014. Gaines was a sixth-round pick in 2015.

How the Browns secondary will look after this weekend’s final cuts and waiver moves remains a mystery. Disappointing 2014 first-rounder Justin Gilbert spent last week in concussion protocol, and free agent pickup Rahim Moore did not crack the starting lineup during the preseason.

I didn't think he was all that bad really. Maybe we'll do something funky and play with 3 safeties and 2 CB's?

?? Gaines has been getting roasted damn near every play. He's a bum.

Just curious, how many players that were on the practice squad end up being good?

Didn't Priest Holmes lead in Fantasy leagues for one year circa 2004, 05 or 06. As a runningback in Kansas City, after leaving Baltimore.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Justin Gilbert not guaranteed a Browns roster spot by Hue Jackson

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...art_river_index

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Another Browns first-round pick could be gone in these final roster moves to 53. Hue Jackson wouldn't guarantee 2014 No. 8 overall pick Justin Gilbert a roster spot Friday, and he's on the bubble heading into Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline.

"Justin did some things better (this preseason),'' coach Hue Jackson said on a conference call Friday. "Everything has an opportunity to be evaluated, everything that every player's done. Our goal and our job is to make sure that we keep the best players here.

"Do I think he's improved? Yeah. Are we going to sit down and evaluate and talk through every opportunity that a young man has had and we can see where they fit for our football team? We're going to do that also."

If Gilbert is waived, he'd be the second recent Browns first-round selection to leave in the past week. The first was 2013 No. 6 overall pick Barkevious Mingo, who was traded to the Patriots for a fifth-round pick.

During the Patriots' preseason finale Thursday night, Mingo had multiple pressures, six tackles, including one for a loss, and two quarterback hits against the Giants' backups.

Gilbert, 24, is currently in the concussion protocol after being injured in Tampa last week. If he goes, it would mean the end in Cleveland for both of the Browns' 2014 first-round picks, including Johnny Manziel.

The Browns already cut 2014 fourth-rounder Pierre Desir, whom they tried to switch from cornerback to safety this year. They've also waived 2015 sixth-round cornerback Charles Gaines, according to ESPN.

The Browns have more decisions to make in the defensive backfield, but it appears they plan to keep Tramon Williams despite the fact he's 33 and making $6.2 million this year.

Gilbert has made some plays this preseason, but has also looked lost at times. He can return kicks, but special teams might not be enough to save him.

I'd bet the FO is trying to trade Gilbert

I'd say no doubt. At this point teams would be better off waiting for the cut.

It's gotta be monetarily based (at least in some regard)

Aaron Murray waived by KC is a pretty big transaction. He would be a huge upgrade over Kessler (although I know Hue would never cut him yet).

Murray is pretty highly thought of in the NFL as a backup/spot starter ... but with Foles signing with KC he became odd man out

I also liked the Safety from Tennessee ... Marqueston Huff. Wanted him late in the draft a few years back

I don't know if that's true.. Kessler has been a disappointment thus far. I think we all can see it, can't believe that Hue can't. So maybe Kessler is gone also or maybe the PS.

Don't know but for sure anything is possible.

I haven't seen much of Kessler in the pre-season, just his TD pass I think, but it might be a little early to make final determination on a rookie QB.

I'll be watching the Seahawks cuts to see if OSU FS Tyvis Powell makes it. Size, speed, and big play ability, I think he could help in what I consider to be a very suspect Browns' secondary. I was surprised when he wasn't drafted, although granted, I'm not completely objective when it comes to Buckeyes.
