Do you have any furniture/appliance experiences worth noting?
I just bought a new “memory foam” style mattress about a month ago.
From Amazon.com for ~ $300 (that’s a cheap matress).
My previous mattress was 5 years old. It was the cheapest possible queen size on the market at the time.
For the past year, a few of those thick metal coil springs came undone and started slightly poking through the cloth mattress exterior. And stabbing me if I rolled over that part of the mattress. OUCH.
So, I finally broke-down and sprang for a new mattress. (Get it? That’s a joke...I say... that’s a joke, son. “Sprang for a new mattress” Are ya listenin’ son?)
It took two weeks for delivery and when it showed-up it came in a box! A fairly small box (~ 4’x2’x2’)
I saw the box and thought “OH KNOW… they sent me the wrong thing.”
I got the box open and this thin mattress was folded tightly inside. I thought “This is no good”.
But once out of the box, on my living room floor, the mattress started expanding - like magic. It grew into a full queen-sized mattress and now resides on my bed.
And here’s the low down. It’s fantastic. It’s like a very dense sponge (no wires). It’s like a water bed but much, much thicker. And it's very light.
It may be the best possible sleeping surface. I love it.
What brand is it? I tried one and hated it, had to return it. Everyone is different as far as what is comfortable with mattresses, which is why I will always go somewhere I can lay on it first I think. The price is great, and the one I got had amazing reviews, but it just didn't work for me. Mine was a Tuft & Needle.
Can you jump on it with a glass of red wine sitting on it without spilling it?
Is that the mark of excellence?
I'm interested in these because I can feel my coils in my mattress too, and always liked the idea of a mattress without coils. I'm just thinking these mattresses might be too soft? I had a waterbed for a year or two and didn't like it at all.
I actually thought mine was too firm and went back to my coil spring. I went to the sleep number store to check out those as I know several people that really like them. I may get one this winter as I did like it.
My first thought is I don't understand the title of the thread.
My second thought is people will spend tens of thousands of dollars on depreciating assets like cars but are always looking to go cheap on something they will spend a third of their life on and that has a direct correlation to health.
My third thought is I hate memory foam. Tried it and it was too firm for me. I like pillow top mattresses that are very soft.

You'll probably want to go to a mattress store, just to check one out. Everybody has different preferences, so what works for one person might not work for you. Those Sleep Number beds actually sound interesting because you can adjust the softness setting.
As for the memory foam, my wife and I got one of those 3-inch add-on pads that you put on top of your existing mattress a few years ago. We love it. We miss it when we go out on road trips and have to sleep on hotel beds.

With the extensive back problems I have, I've exhausted almost every mattress option one can think of within a somewhat reasonable price range.
Not long after moving to Tennessee I purchased a memory foam mattress. While it felt pretty good in the store, I wasn't quite sure how much I would like sleeping on it. While I didn't buy the cheapest one, I also didn't buy a top of the line one.
I'm very happy I decided to purchase a memory foam mattress. When the time comes to replace it, I will buy a higher quality memory foam mattress. As has been mentioned, everyone is different, but in my case, it's a wonderful solution with my back issues.

We've had ours for years. Love it.
Only problem with it? I keep my side at 60. My wife keeps hers at about 20. Heaven forbid I roll towards the middle of the bed. Feels like falling off a cliff.
Arch, Would you happen to know if they make a queen size that is all one, I mean it doesn't have two different sides? I'm a single guy so I wouldn't need a split queen. I have mild back problems and I can't seem to find a mattress that doesn't aggravate it and I've seen the sleep number commercials but they always show a couple with a split mattress.

The standard Sleep Number Queen is a single outer mattress unit, but it has 2 air capsules inside of it, that run the length of the mattress.
I just set both sides to the same number, and it is fine for me. It is the best mattress for my back, and my back is pretty terrible.

We had a memory foam bed... It was great for sleeping, very comfortable. It was horrible for... how should I say this... OTHER things you do in your bed.
It's like a marshmallow.. no push back, no spring, no recoil... you just sink down into it.. we got it out of there quickly... well, I did.

I've had a memory foam mattress for about 5 years now. I paid about $1000 for mine and I'd do it again in a heartbeat - hands down, it is some of the best money I've ever spent.
I've heard great things about the inexpensive options for Sam's Club memory foam mattresses; I've never tried the Amazon.com ones, but being that I'm currently in the market for one for a guest room, I will definitely be looking at this!

You sure it was the bed?
Well, never had the same issues with any other beds.. maybe I just had the wrong memory foam bed.. not sure.
i bought a 5k sleep number ILE California king about 2 years ago, had the dual chambers, heat/cool top Sleep IQ etc, great for the first year, but first time you need to move it...its been garbage ever since, went and bought my son a serta pillowtop queen set at a local store and its 10x more comfortable than our bed, his was 700 for everything.. Never again
Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday. -John Wayne
Our sleep number bed is 15 years old. It's been moved. Only problem with it is the remote lost it's display. Not really a problem though. If it's too soft, you pump it up, if it's too firm, you dial it down.
...I seem to sleep best on hardwood flooring. Of course, I've only ever done it after a night of hard drinking. It has been about a decade, though.
The second best was probably the coffin rack with the cheap mattress on aircraft carriers. Mostly because after 12 hour shifts and random drills/watches I was usually exhausted. The subtle rocking at sea may have helped a little bit.

yeah i know how they work..lol, but i think my issue is the way the foam pieces on the outside of the bed go together and the fact that its a split king might have something to do with it, it kind of bulges out on the side, granted more so on my side as I'm 230lbs but no matter how many times i try to put it back together it bulges out on side and gets extremely soft. Probably need to just have them send someone out to look

That's a good idea, testing one out at a mattress store before purchasing.
Our sleep number bed is the best bed we ever had. I shake my head in amazement when I hear you guys saying a memory foam mattress is to firm My side of the bed is set on 100. Of course I would be fine sleeping on a cement slab, and using a cement block for a pillow. There is not a company in Existence that makes a firm enough & thick enough pillow for me.
