Sure it is. Guess if you have that much trust in others on the roadway....go for it.

Note the word "optional" in my above statement. I believe that would mean rider's choice.

I would never, ever put my life in the hands of another this way when such a simple protection might save it. Way to many distracted drivers and opportunity for error.

I've quite a few passengers with me and I always start with Fight Club-like rules:

Rule #1: Don't take your feet off the pegs unless we're stopped and I tell you when
Rule #2: Don't take your feet off the pegs unless we're stopped and I tell you when!

Other than that, don't lean to help me when we're turning, I can handle that myself.

Yes, stopping the the biggest difference. You'll need more time and road to stop and you also have to stop using a different method. Meaning, if you normally use your rear brake until you stop then put both feet down, I've found that I use my rear brake until I'm close to stopping, get my feet near the ground to stabilize the extra weight and then use the front brake for the last few feet of stopping. Little things like that, but those are things you learn in the moment I guess.

I probably didn't have my wife on the back for ~15 months. I needed the confidence.

I read it as you saying that helmets being optional is crazy

As I've said, I'm a 100% helmet guy on my motorcycle. Heck, I wear a helmet on my bicycle, when I'm on my skateboard (in the pool) and when I'm snowboarding. With that being said, I think people should be allowed to not wear one if that's their choice. It's a huge risk, but it's their risk. It can only hurt them.

I have more than 50 pieces of head gear to wear when I ride.

All are worn backwards so the wind doesn't blow them off.

Okay Punch and other gear heads. I spent some time this weekend researching the two biggest pieces of gear, the jacket and helmet. Here's what I've come up with:

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/joe-rocket-reactor-30-jacket
Mesh and leather hybrid jacket. Mesh and leather at chest, shoulders and elbow. CE armor in shoulder and elbow area. Comes with a removable linear to keep rain and etc out. Spine area to buy a CE back/spine protector (Joe Rocket makes their own protectors/armors)

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shoei-rf-1200-helmet-solid
DOT and SNELL M2015 safety rated is the biggest selling point. Reviews for the helmet are amazing. Apparent good air circulation and good at keeping noise volume low (like wind). Alot of user reviews saying its a very light helmet too, which was important to me.

Thus far, these are the only two pieces I've narrowed down to pretty much certain they'll be what I go with. Thoughts?

Next I'm researching gloves and pants. I'll post links for opinion/review when I narrow down/research...

Thanks in advance!

I wont weight in on the helmet because I haven't found one yet that I can stand to wear.

But look for shirts, pants, and jackets that have harder caps in knees and elbows. Those are the m0ost likely places you will sustain injury in a slide

Good choice. The elbows and shoulders could be better, but it's a lot better than nothing. That's one of the reasons I like Dainese, their elbow and shoulder gear is the best because they know that's where you'll slide. I don't think I'd trust the waterproofing unless it was a light drizzle that last a few minutes. The jacket isn't long, so the rain would drip into your pants, unless you have pants that came up higher, like bib pants. And yeah, I'd look for the back insert as well. If the size isn't perfect, Revzilla's shipping and return policy is great.

It's not cheap, but they're known for great quality. Dang, 541 reviews, you know it's been scrutinized after that many. My first helmet was too heavy, so yeah, watch out for that.

I think those are solid choices. I can't complain.

I could have used a jacket yesterday. Half way between my place and Ravenna Ohio yesterday morning I looked like this guy (minus the hail) of course I was wearing a backwards Browns cap, and a short sleeve Browns Hawaiian Shirt. No helmet or jacket.

Yes I left a wet mess all through the DR office. At least my shirt and hat dried off during the hour ride home, but I still had a puddle in the back of my pants when I stopped in the Grocery store when I got back into town.

Thanks Punch.

There's Joe Rocket pants I'm looking at has a zipper to attach it to the jacket in the back there. I'm assuming this is to keep the water out and make sure there's no plumber crack while riding?

That must have been a chilly ride down RT5??

Yeah, some of the complete systems, jacket and pants from the same manufacturer, have a zipper to keep the liners lined up to protect against air and water.

As I mentioned way above, rain protection hasn't been an easy thing to figure out, so I'd probably just buy the jacket and pants without the liners if that saves you money. I'd suggest buying a separate rain jacket and pants you can throw over your regular gear (LINK). You'll find yourself rarely riding in the rain, unless you commute for work.

Well, that's what I would do.

Hey all! Remember this thread!

Well many months has passed. I picked up my R6 today and drove it from Wooster to Cleveland (all back roads.) Love it. My butt is a little sore and my forearms are literally wrecked, but I'll get use to it in no time.

Slow speed maneuvering is difficult. That 400+ lb super sport R6 is hard to do so.

All in all, my first motorcycle ride today and it was actually a long one, but I had a great time. The attention the bike gets from women is unreal. Draws attention from others too, first stop light some Dodge Dart wanted to race me.

The most important thing is this thing is fast, extremely fast. I haven't even hit the power bands and wow. I will have to have the utmost respect for this machine and be extremely responsible/even more mindful of other idiots out there.

But yeah, figured I'd update ya'll. One wicked ride!

Working on getting the carbs synced on my Vstar 1100

Performance clutch upgrade and Air Pod kit in the offseason. Completely eliminated that restrictive factory air box.

Hopefully should be already sometime this weekend

I remember a few yrs. ago my Bro-In-Law took me for a ride on his Kal 1200cc? I'm thinking. Anyway it's Christmas Day and the streets are dry and he stops in the middle of the road and tells me to hang on and grabs my hands and wraps them around his waist and tells me to hold my wrists. hold on tight he yells and guns the engine and throws the clutch. Man I almost fell off the back. I've never felt that much force before. smile

I've rode modified dirt bikes before, but nothing that amounts to a street bike. Riding on Christmas day though? Haha, awesome! thumbsup

Been riding for about 25 years, ever since i was old enough to get on one (dirtbikes) Ridden every manufacturer and all different setups.. I've used to race the Wera circuit back in the day as well on a gsxr-750. Currently have a gsxr-1000 and a harley v-rod. My two fav bikes i've owned were my ducati 996 and my 1999 hayabusa. If you're just starting out, Would caution against the R1 over the R6..The liter bikes can be unforgiving for newbies...get used to being able to whip a 600 around, get used to the lean and being able to control your right hand and braking. Mid ohio offers some great riding courses for sport bikes. Biggest piece of advice I have is dress for the crash and not the ride. I know during the summer it gets hot etc, but i'm never without leather, kevlar and a great helmet with plenty of ventilation... also, be careful as this hobby is expensive..lol, only thing i've spent more money on is my Z06 and my jeep...oh and stay away from honda..and kawasaki...honda power is laughable and kawasaki has some of the worst ride positions. Im a suzuki guy but can be ok with the R1, if you want premium, go with the Ducati, or the bmw s1000RR

No, I'm a late 50's guy and I'm glad he told me to hold my wrists because if I hadn't done that I'm off the end of that bike
