Fox News is reporting 300 dead in Haiti. Worst disaster for them since the earthquake in 2010.

It might be a category 5 now. Can't confirm. The worst will be from now until 2:00 am.

Got word from a friend in Haiti that she is ok. She is doing some volunteer work, said where she is at didn't get hit as hard.
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

https://www.facebook.com/ActionNewsJacksonville/videos/1261828967222920/If I had to guess, that's maybe a 3-4 foot storm surge that happened about 11 hours ago. Multiply the height of that by 3 and that's what some areas are projecting. It's going to be a LOT further inland too. With high tide it might be +4.

Just talked to my family in Columbia, SC. They lost power at 7:00. You are right, the storm is doing damage inland.

We prepared for worst and didn't get much, one of the benefits of living where i Live directly west of canaveral, hurricanes for whatever reason do not like that area, they go around it. Nasa weren't dummies for building KSC there. There was a video showing it literally look like it bounced off melbourne, went east around Cape then made landfall at New smyrna beach..lol, All i got was about 60 feet of fence blown down and a few trees, i never even lost power.

Thankfully the death toll is low. However, the problem now is flooding after record breaking rainfall in the area.

Something I wanted to pass along- But many deaths that follow a big storm in the U.S. come in the days and weeks afterward β especially if there are power outages.
Carbon monoxide poisoning often leads the list, as people turn to grills and gas stoves.
The gas is odorless and invisible, so people can be poisoned with no warning. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, headaches, dizziness and vomiting.
"About 70 people die every year and many more are injured from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by portable generators," the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns.
"Carbon monoxide (CO) from a generator used indoors can kill you and your family in minutes."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to keep generators at least 20 feet away from homes β and that includes keeping them away from open windows, too. Carbon monoxide alarms can warn that the gas is around. Lack of medical care is another danger. Many hospitals along Florida's coasts shut down ahead of Matthew.
If flooding takes out roads, patients who need regular medical care, such as kidney dialysis, chemotherapy or those who suffer an emergency such as a heart attack may not get the treatment they need.
People may not be able to get prescription drugs, either.

After all the hype on this blow the next one will find people ignoring the warnings and trying to ride it out I fear.

After all the hype on this blow the next one will find people ignoring the warnings and trying to ride it out I fear. It's better to be safe than sorry. I know people are in control of their own lives and can and will take their own risk. But taking a risk on something like...this? Mother Nature doesn't discriminate.

The decision to stay or go can be a tough one depending on where you live. For example, if I was living in Charleston, I wouldn't have too much of a problem w/leaving. However, I actually did live in Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks for awhile. I stayed through two hurricanes because it took people months and months to be able to return after hurricanes. I had to work. No way could I miss working for 3 months while they repaired the washed out roads and bridges on to and connecting a barrier island. Hell, we used to have Hurricane Parties. You would have loved 'em.

Thank God, my dad and step mother got phone and electric service back yesterday. They had to do the survivalist bit for several days, eating cold canned goods and living without AC. Fortunately they escaped without any damage to themselves, r their home.

Thank you.
As the saying goes, it's not (only) the heat, it's the humidity. The humidity was horrible because of all the rain from the storm. My Step Mom said that it was only 81 or 82, but the humidity was absolutely oppressive.
