usually at the quarter mark you can get a barometer
of what this team needs in the large picture.

1. QB. Kessler has a limited ceiling. he just doesn't have
the arm strength to be a upper tier qb.RG3 is made a glass. McCown needs to retire and go into coaching

2.LB. the Browns don't have one LB that the offense has to account for. none of the LBers have the temperament to play dominant or tenacious. overall a very soft group.

3. TE. in this day and age you need a TE that can create mismatches and dominate the seams.Barnidge looks like he may have peaked as a TE. he had his one great year.
none of the TEs behind him on the depth suggest they are the next Kyle Rudolph or even Xavier Grimble for that matter

I think Barnidge can still play. They have just been under utilizing him thus far.

This is easy for me as of right now:

1. QB - We'll all agree here
2. Pass rush - Maybe the young guys will prove to be somewhat of an answer, but whether it's LB/DL, we need playmakers
3. FS - Poyer is not good. Kindred/Campbell are more of SS types IMO.

I'd add the right side of the line as a VERY close 4th

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

1. QB
2. CB
3. ILBer

I think this team has almost too many needs to list, but those are my top 3.

He has been targeted 20 times in four games so it's not like we're ignoring him. This is something I suggested might happen before the season started....that Barnidge's production may slip because we have more receiving weapons and teams may focus on covering him early in the season as he was our only legit target last season. Add in the fact our running game is legit, and we're on our 3rd stringer, this may continue to be the case. But I think his numbers will ramp up a bit more considering Kessler is making shorter throws and teams are game planning for Pryor....cue the DFS point that he could be a cheap play.

Needs:
QB
Safety (moreso FS)
RT (not changing this after one good game by our current RT)
OLB (lots of young guys but no one rising to the top)

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

as far as Barnidge goes he's 31 right now.
you know how when players especially skill players hit 31 32 their production dips and effectiveness
I think next year he would make a good #2 TE.
I think with the way the Browns are running the ball
thats taking yards away from the passing game in a sense
IMO he just doesn't look the same from 2015.
as far as pass rush goes Cam Johnson showed alot of closing speed on the QB.
I think the Browns should add a pass Rusher through free agency not draft one.

I couldn't list all the needs the Browns have. I didn't even add FS or RT, like Memphis did, but we do need upgrades there. Heck, I think we need a center so we can put Greco back at RG. I don't like our SS's either.

I don't know, man. TE seems down the list to me.

Four games in, our biggest needs are:

Stabilizing the offensive line, especially from center to the right side.

Determine our safeties. Poyer has not been very good. IC and Kindred I think are our best bet.

More discipline. We're getting a lot of silly flags that continue to hurt us.

A kick and punt return game, ours sucks.

Stabilizing the qb position but that's an ongoing process it seems.

Find more ways to bring heat. I know Nassib coming back will help that out big time.

There are many needs but these stick out:

QB - Kessler is a smart hard working player and he is an asset. However, his limitations stand in the way of being a franchise quarterback.

OL - The right side needs players both as starters and depth. Although I would be against it I feel the Browns may move Joe.

Pass rush - The jury is still out on Nassib and Ogbah but the Browns have to get after the QB. They are doing better inside against the run. They need edge guys.

We all have our opinions, but for the life of me, I have no idea why so many people think that Poyer is playing worse than Kindred and Campbell.

I don't even like Poyer, but man, how do people not notice the poor choices the other two make in coverage?

I agree to a point on QB. I like Kessler but like you say, he appears limited.

Agree totally on the LB

Don't agree at all on TE.

1. QB, I agree generally but I don't see anything on the horizon that will take us where we want to be.

2. Like you, LB

3. I'm going to go with Center. I just don't believe in Irving at all. That kid that played last week looked amazing by comparison. Maybe he's the one, I don't know.

I think we have receivers, (need to resign Pryor), I think we have RB's.. (need to lock them up)

After that, I think DB's.

I have already written about my concerns about Kessler, but the kid has only played a couple of games thus fat. He also has not gone through a full off-season of pro strength training. I think that an arm can be improved through training. He'll never have a rocket arm, but he has shown some degree of anticipation, and decent to very good ball placement, which is a good base on which to build.

He seems like a guy who is going to do everything that is necessary to succeed. If the team feels that he is developing, and that there are no QBs in the coming draft that project as being better than him, then maybe we decide to grab the top pass rusher and the best CB in the coming draft.

However, who knows? It is really early to know what needs this team will have by the end of the season ... especially given the youth of the team. Guys certainly should develop as the year progresses. We have a bunch of young players who are only 4 games into their rookie seasons.

Plus, maybe the team decides that the season is lost, and they trade Joe Thomas for a 1st and 2nd. Maybe they trade Barnidge and/or Haden.

Things can change really fast in the NFL. We are only 1/4 of the way into this season.

I'm not a fan of any of our free safeties, to be honest. I feel Kindred offers more a physical presence and I think he's shown that he can come up and help in run support. IC, before injury, had some hiccups but he's really a rookie. He's one of the better tackles we've seen. Textbook and if the opportunity is there to lay down the wood, he's done that too. All JMO.

Edit, when I refer to IC, I'm talking about the strong safety position. Just to clarify.

Our safety play could certainly be better...lots of youth back there that should develop. The ONE guy with any experience is Poyer and he's really a nickle safety. He's good in the nickle mode, but he's not a starter. That's not his fault...it just is what it is.

Someone that can cover a TE.
Someone that can get consistent pressure on opposing QBs.
Players that can tackle.
Players that don't fumble.
A kicker that can stay healthy AND make FGs.
...perhaps more officials on the payroll.

or we could go:
Better Players.
More Time.
Fewer Injuries.

a little more seriously:

Top 3 Positions
1) FS
2) CB
3) Pass Rusher

We could use improvements at QB, C, RT, and ILB. Probably a big DE, too.

On O, I think we need to clean up mistakes more than add talent. They move the ball well at times. Definitely could add talent still.

On D, we just lack talent. Primarily in the secondary.

I leave Center off because we've had a couple of guys now that are behind Erving show that they can get the job done. We just need to get one or all of those guys back and we'll be fine.

I leave QB off because what we have is "good enough" for right now. If we improved the defense dramatically, we'd be in all of these games even with the QB's we have now - that says to me that while an upgrade would be ideal, it isn't dire. It can be addressed for Year 3, if need be.

This defense, however... it's like wet toilet paper.

Pass rush is our biggest need. We have nothing in that department.

After that I think it has to pan out a bit more before any others can be positivly identified. I'll give it a few more weeks beore I try to pinpoint more.

I agree with a few other comments....Purp pointed out we found a center who can play. He is hurt right now, but that doesn't make it a real need unless this is about the here and now, which to me is a moot point. It's hard to impact any position mid season. Most good players are already on teams. Vers pointed out that TE isn't a need. I agree. We haven't utilized Barnidge, and I have high hopes for Hamlett. I think he can be good, and we still haven't seen a DeVale sighting to this point. I think the position is in good shape.

Based on what I see at this point, it's going to be really hard to pass on Myles Garrett of Texas A&M. That guy knows how to get in on a QB. A guy like that turns a D around in a hurry. All of a sudden guys you thought were OK at best start to look real good when you have a guy who can get in the QB's face on a regular basis. Even if he's not, the QB is worried that he will. Guys like that change everything.

Keep Reiter as our future Center

keep our player healthy, so many have gotten hurt this year.

correct stupid mental errors, and we are 2-2

Cody is our best QB...like him but we need more out of the position.

sign the Crow to long term deal.

keep this staff together for another 5-6 years atleast.

Only thing I chage is the timeframe on keeping the staff. I'd say 2 years minimum.....after this season. Three full seasons is a fair enough grace period.

This is season 1.

QB
CB
LB
O-line

When it comes to a guy like Kessler, I wonder if Hue thinks he can get that arm strength to improve and get us a Drew Brees 2.0 perhaps. I have a hard time believing that he would pick Kessler for his short to midrange game only when you consider how often he likes to take shots down the field. It wouldn't make sense for him to draft a guy he didn't think capable of doing that.

CB I think is a position where I think we do like we did with the Wr's last year... I'd be surprised if we don't draft at least 3. Plus 1, possibly 2 guys for FS.

I think Kirksey and Davis pair well back there, but neither is a game changer.

Oline... when you have the 2nd leading rusher in the NFL, and the top rushing duo... averaging around 6 yrds per carry... it's difficult to say this O-line sucks. Considering how much we've been able to get out of our own guys, UDFA's, and pickups from other teams, I don't think we pick anyone too terribly high, unless we have a JoeT type prospect for RT.

ST's I think will eventually shake out. We have so much to be concerned with in regards to the OFF and DEF that at this juncture I don't think we can afford the roster space for a couple of guys that will only ever be ST's players.

Peen you're spot on. I'll be curious to see if we draft similar to how Denver did back in 2011 & 2012. Those 2 drafts made them what they are today.

I can still see Myles Garrett being the #1 pick. He can have a Von Miller type of impact.

PRAY that Drango and Coleman work out.

#1 priority is Defense and it starts with a potential STUD at OLB.

Myles Garrett.

A damn QB. Again.

CB--A good one should be there with Philly pick.

Fa needs used for FS, DL and ILB help.

1. Someone to pressure the QB. Garrett opposite Nassib sounds good.
2. Cornerback.
3. Safety

While I don't dislike any player on the team, if you can improve the position, you do it. So far, these are the most needed positions to my eye.

I'd take either Coleman or Drango to work out. That would be big.

Also for Shelton to keep improving.

Two positions that would be set for a while

A lot of people are talking about one of--if not our biggest--need is getting an edge rusher.

Are you guys saying that Ogbah and Nassib are busts? Isn't it a little early for that?

They were listing Nassib as a DE. I think we could use another OLB across from Ogbah. My infatuation with Myles Garrett may have broken the tie amongst many positions for the third spot. A stud pass rusher can help cover up things in the back end, and I don't think you can have too many of them.

Long term I think Schobert's best position will be ILB. I don't think he has the size to consistently set the edge. I'll have to focus on him more. Have we tried having him cover TE's?

Way too early.

But think Kruger opposite Suggs.

Keep Nassib on the Line. Garrett and Ogbah at OLB.

I'm not saying that at all. In fact, for me, those 2 are big part of why I like this draft class.

But, you can never have enough edge rushers. Take the Broncos for example they got sacks Von Miller, Ware, Shaq Barrett and Shane Ray.

And while I think Ogbah and Nassib could develop into good rushers but neither provide that screaming off the edge ROLB type.

And the surest way imo to improve pass defense is to put pressure on the QB. You can never have too much.

I agree about Schobert back when he was drafted I figured he would play ILB. He and Kirksey both played the same position/role in college as "OLB" that sometimes rushed and sometimes covered TEs kinda like a 43 SAM. And in 34 to me that type of LB skillset fits better on the inside then outside.

I think the defense would be better (physically) if you swapped out Schobert for Davis. But I don't know how that would impact the leadership dynamic on the field/locker room.

Don't mean to use you/your post as a topic starter - but I'm curious how everyone feels about Davis @ ILB thus far? Doing good, bad, why? Seems lacking in coverage big time but maybe that's cause we were use to watching Dansby drop back in coverage and he was excellent usually in doing so.

Thoughts?
