Former #Patriots OL Jonathan Cooper was claimed by the #Browns, source said.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Boston is far to the left as KC settles into the slot. Fannin is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Sampson are split in the backfield as the ball is hiked ... Here we go."

If Cooper leaves the Browns next offseason as a free agent he will count as a lost free agent in the 2018 comp pick calculations.

Browns awarded OL Jonathan Cooper via waivers

Former 1st round pick has played for Cardinals, Patriots

The Cleveland Browns on Monday were awarded OL Jonathan Cooper after being claimed off waivers from New England. The team also placed OL Austin Reiter on injured reserve (knee) and waived OL Anthony Fabiano.

Cooper is a 6-2, 302-pound fourth year offensive linemen that most recently spent the first four weeks of the season with the Patriots. Cooper, acquired by New England via a trade with the Arizona Cardinals in March 2016, was inactive for the first four games before being waived on October 8, 2016. Originally a first-round draft pick (seventh overall) of the Cardinals in 2013, Cooper played in 24 games for Arizona, making two starts at LG in 2014 and nine starts at RG in 2015. A native of Wilmington, N.C., he started 48 career games at University of North Carolina and was a consensus All-America First-Team selection as a senior in 2012. Cooper attended John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C.

Probabaly.

But he can't be any worse in psss blocking than what we're currently seeing.

And this bothers me. I wonder if we will see him in the next couple weeks.

Cause our pass blocking sucks. But our run blocking? Top 3 in the league

Well, and I know it was just one instance but I'm sure if you were to look up the stats on teams we ran on, probably a lot of other teams ran on them too. No competition.

With NE, we were bricked up and shut out. They didn't seem to be selling out for the run either. Don't quote me but I think Crow had 22 yards on 13 carries . That's poopy.

Willing to risk it. Because the waving at folks while they fly by is deadly.

Overheard at our game: "No sane QB will be answering the phone if it rings this week."
Might be some truth in that; I grinned, but it is sad.

His problem in Arizona was confidence issues after his injuries.

On Saturday October 8th the New England Patriots waived Jonathan Cooper. The deadline for a team to claim Cooper was 4PM October 10th. The Cleveland Browns have according to various reports. I believe that Ian Rapoport may have been the first. This blog will attempt to explain the salary cap impact of the New England Patriots waiving Cooper while also answering questions about the impact.

When the Patriots acquired Jonathan Cooper as part of the Chandler Jones trade, they assumed responsibility for his 2016 roster bonus and his 2016 salary. Both of his roster bonus and his salary were fully guaranteed. The Patriot paid Cooper his $1,713,954 roster bonus in the early part of training camp. Cooper was on the Patriots roster for 5 weeks so they are responsible for 5/17ths (17 weeks and not 16 games since players are paid for the bye week) of his $675,000 salary. $675,000 divided by 17 weeks times 5 weeks equals $198,529. The Browns now become responsible for 12/17ths of his salary or $476,471. Cooper will now count as dead money on the 2016 Patriots salary cap. His total dead money is $1,713,954 plus $198,529 or $1,918,723. There is no 2017 dead money with Cooper nor will the Pats receive a credit on their 2017 cap for Cooper.

Q: How did the Browns claiming Cooper help the Pats?
A: The Browns took on the responsibility of the remainder of Cooper’s guaranteed salary freeing up $476,471 in cap space for the Patriots. If Cooper had gone unclaimed, his entire $675,000 salary would have remained on the Patriots salary cap since it was fully guaranteed.

Q: Will the Patriots get a compensatory pick for Cooper?
A: No. If Cooper leaves the Browns next offseason as a free agent he will count as a lost free agent for the Browns in the 2018 comp pick calculations. By waiving Cooper the Pats opted not to have Cooper possibly count as a lost free agent. Their decision has a great deal of logic behind it. Pats are likely to lose more free agents this offseason than they will sign. The maximum number of compensatory picks a team can receive is 4. If Cooper had remained on the roster he may not have played a snap for them as the Pats have committed to playing their offensive line starters play 100% of the snaps.

Q: How much cap space do the Patriots now have?
A: I have the Patriots cap space as $9,883,838. Before the Browns claimed Cooper I had the Patriots cap space number as $9,407,367.

Q: Is ten million in cap space enough for the rest of the season?
A: It is more than enough to cover the rest of the season expenses.
1.) replacing injured players
2.) 53-man roster turnover
3.) practice-squad turnover
4.) paying reached NTLBE 46-man active roster bonuses. 12 Patriots can earn up a total of $1,301,562 if they are active for the remaining twelve games in the Patriots season.
5.) extensions with players with low salaries (example, Butler, Develin, Fleming)

Q: Why spend all that money and never learn if he can play at all? I know he was hurt but that happens.
A: What the Patriots did learn about Jonathan Cooper was not enough to choose an alternative option to free up a roster spot. Plus, the Patriots currently have good depth at the interior offensive line positions and also have Chris Barker on their practice squad.

At one time, we traded for a guy names John Greco, and people said how bad a deal that was for us. I liked Greco from his days at Boardman High. (my alma mater)

Sometimes a guy just takes time to develop, and I think that's what happened with Greco. Perhaps this is what will happen with Cooper as well. Plus, sometimes a guy is in the wrong situation. He sure seems like he is worth a look. We put Reiter (who is out with a torn ACL) on IR to make room for him, so we didn't really have to give up anyone to add him.

Decent move- if he can get/stay healthy, could be a great move. Low risk.

Agreed... I really liked him coming out of college. Great run blocker and solid pass blocker. Was very physical. I hope he can stay healthy and contribute.

it's low risk, plus we get a compensatory pick if he signs elsewhere ... our FO was salivating to claim him I'm sure

Cooper is a Guard...is he replacing Bailey?

What about the rookies the Browns drafted..when do they get the opportunity to step in?

Finding good offensive lineman is not easy..when you have them, you might want to keep them...or keep a lot QBs on your roster.

Who is the backup C this week?

If the coaches put Erving back in at C, I'll be hoping that they know he can do the job...but I've not seen it yet.

I think the Fabiano cut means Erving will be active this week.

I think Bailey is on thin ice with the Cooper signing.

I think this Cooper signing was low risk/high reward signing. IMO, it has nothing to do with who is playing good or bad, but possibility capitalizing on a player who was a first round pick. His contract for the year was under $476,000, of which $150,000 has already been paid (assuming 5 game checks of 16). All bonuses have been paid by other teams.

I don't expect much but you never know. He may hate it here in Cleveland and opt for FA regardless if he plays well. Then we'll get a compensatory pick.

From the point of view of a fan, it might look like a low risk signing.

From the viewpoint of a Browns QB, the first question on their mind might be..can Cooper pass block?

Last week, we saw what one missed block can do to your team. When the coaches are confident that Cooper knows the playbook and knows the offense's language, we will likely get to see how he fits in.

He sure looks the part physically...but Coop is now on his third team in 3 years...must be some kind of issue with him..but I hope he is comfortable playing for the Browns.

This is pretty much how I view it.
From Top 10 pick to his 3rd team in 12 months after less than 4 seasons and the most recent to waive him is Belichick?
Unless there is a whole lot of missing backstory here, I'd say yup - he's a Gilbert.

Yeah his issue is that he has had injury problems since he was drafted.

He was drafted #7 overall as a guard. That is pretty freakin high for a guard. He broke his leg in his rookie preseason and was put on IR for the year. He hurt his wrist and knee in 2014. He hurt his knee again in 2015. He hurt his plantar fascia this year while in New England.

Here is the worst case scenario. We are getting a comp pick just for trying the guy out to see what made him the first guard drafted in the top ten since 1986.

He costs us nothing to try out other than a little bit of Jimmy's money. If he pans out, he is only 26 and young enough to be in our long term plans. If he doesn't pan out, he gets us a comp pick.

well, we'd get a comp pick IF he was signed by somebody else by June 1, 2017 ... and if he's on our roster all year IIRC

Not to mention that those are some serious lengths to go to in order to hopefully, maybe, snag another 7th round pick.

And so many wanted him to start over Schwartz at RT before the 2015 season began.

This is a good pickup. Not sure what happened to him in the NFL, but he was a beast entering the draft. Could be an upgrade at RG. Might the OL version of S.Paea.

Waiver claims so far are looking like the strength of this new FO. Paea, Buddy-C, Colquitt, Reiter. They've claimed better talents than they drafted, lol

Just a hunch, but probably analytics work better applied to players already in the league. If DePodesta thinks he can apply analytics on college stats and measurables like minors in baseball, then we're doomed and this will blow up quickly. Judging on their first draft I fear that's exactly what they're doing.

Stick to claiming players, lol. I honestly think you can assemble a 5 win team on the waiver wire in 12 months time that would beat the Browns 53 team they started the season with. Keep claiming !

It looks like his skeletal structure is not able to support the forces generated at the Pro level. Being 26 years old, he's done growing so the idea he will grow out of this, very, very slim.

A lack of durability in an offensive linemen is a negative that is hard to overcome.

That would be a violation of the salary cap.
