UPDATE 2: As of around 12 PM ET, Dyn says it’s investigating another DDOS attack, and is continuing to attempt to “mitigate” the issue. Box, Twitter and other sites appear to be down again. The White House press secretary has also said that the Department of Homeland Security is investigating the attacks.
UPDATE: As of 9:36 AM ET, Dyn says it has restored its DNS services to normal operation.
A number of popular sites and services are down right now for many users, including Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify and Shopify. The cause appears to be a sweeping outage of DNS provider Dyn, as a result of a DDOS attack, according to a post on Hacker News.
We’re tracking the outage and will let you know if we discover anything further about outage length, cause or sites affected.
Other sites experiencing issues include Box, Boston Globe, New York Times, Github, Airbnb, Reddit, Freshbooks, Heroku and Vox Media properties. Users accessing these sites might have more or less success depending on where they’re located, as some European and Asian users seem not to be encountering these issues.
Dyn says that the DDOS attack affecting its customers is mostly impacting the U.S. East coast, and specifically Managed DNS customers. Engineers are working on “mitigating” the issue, according the DNS provider.
As of around 9:15 AM ET some of the affected services appear to be improving in reliability. We’ll continue to monitor for updates.

DDoS attacks happen mostly because everyday Joes don't know how to secure their computers and are infected by botnets. These botnets are like secret armies that when activated (without the owner's knowledge) start trying to connect to the address or addresses being attacked. So when a site like a DNS (domain name server) is being attacked, it is unable to serve it's customers sites (redirect http request to client sites) due to there being too many simultaneous request for their system to handle.
I personally think many of these botnets are owned or contracted to big business and governments for attacks like this. Today's attack shows very little in the way of gain to the attackers unless there is a rival business that somehow benefitted by denying service to a competitor. Saying it's a show of power makes no sense to me at all. Hackers like this spend months/years building these botnets and would not expose themselves without a profit motive or very good cause. The 'cause' doesn't really fit here IMHO, so the Feds need to follow the money motive and see who won.
DDoS attacks happen every day and I would love to be the person that could find a way to stop them, that person will be a billionaire overnight.

I work in the field and I can't keep up with all the gadget social media sites, I quit trying. Every few months there is a shiny new thing that the millennials flock to in droves... By the time I figure out what it is, try to learn how to use it and decide if it's even worth using, they are on to the next great thing.
I mean sites like Pinterest do nothing for me, I don't care about the hookup apps and I'm not calling uber or going on a couch surfing vacation at a total stranger's house... Call me old or old fashion. I still use Facebook.

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee stopped by Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room to drop some knowledge about Friday’s massive DDoS attack that affected large swaths of the internet. Blackburn managed to say a lot of techy-sounding things until her time was up. No one walked away feeling smarter.
Blackburn sits on the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, so it’s not great news to hear the politician bumble through an update about Friday’s disruptive hack. What’s infuriating is listening to Blackburn try to tie this to the failed anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA:

There’s been bipartisan agreement in the House. It has not moved forward into the Senate. We also know that a few years ago we tried to do a bill called SOPA in the House which required the ISPs to some governance on these networks and to block some of the bad actors.
How is SOPA related to the wave of large-scale distributed denial of service attacks on the servers of the DNS host Dyn? I really can’t tell you.

The Stop Online Piracy Act was, officially, legislation that was intended to—wait for it—stop online piracy. Among other things, it was designed to set up penalties for sites that infringed U.S. intellectual property laws. It’s complicated, but suffice it to say that SOPA would’ve been ineffective at stopping piracy and dangerous for the continued freedom of the internet.
It would take a serious leap of imagination to connect the proposed laws particulars to cyber security, and Blackburn doesn’t try. She’s happy to just say “SOPA-Cybersecurity-We’re trying” and then move on to labeling critics of that legislation as “cyberbots.”
And of course, there were all of the cyberbots that took out after us that were trying to say ‘no you can’t do that you’re going to impede our free speech. We said ‘no we’re trying to keep the roadway clear and to keep some of these bad actors out of the system.

Blackburn then turns to naming various types of -wares and vaguely warning that they could be hiding for, like, a long time.
So, what you have now, whether it is foreign or domestic, no one knows. No one knows who has released some ransomware, spyware, malware into the system that is caus- and bear in mind also this malware can live on your system for a year or much longer before it is detected.
She wraps up with some sage advice about not clicking stray email links or visiting shady websites. She’s right about this, don’t do that.
And that is how you’ve had some of these extensive data breaches because the malware gets into the system, it rests there, it is pulling information and at some point, it activates. And as I tell my constituents, be careful what websites you go to, be careful what emails you open because you may be unintendedly inviting that malware or spyware into your system.
This is one of the people who oversees communications and technology policy for what is arguably the most technologically advanced nation on Earth. Putin just breathed a sigh of relief.

In some cases you're right. But in many cases you are wrong. My wife is from California and has family spread across the country. She uses Facebook to see updated pictures and such from her family. It's nice to help stay in touch with people you went to school with. That's supposing you made friends in school. That's really the only social media we use and we never accept people as friends on FB unless they're people we already know. Often times when you make blanket statements you miss the mark by a mile.

Well for me, it means more than some weird comment posted and then forgotten soon as you post it =) I'm not a big fan of twitter, but nothing has been more effective in the last few years for spreading news in real time than Twitter. So those messages that you think are lost seem to be getting through to those who understand and use it. I've recently kicked up my twitter usage for topics I'm interested in and I get email notifications daily that I find useful more often than not. As for being the weirdo with no real life, living a fake online existence... I think that is an antiquated perception of today's reality. Sure if you don't understand or use this tech, it's easy to put it down; but in our day we didn't have instant communication other than phones. When I was young there were no cell phones, so we had to use land lines. It was much harder to find people with like minds so we had to have friends with dissimilar interests. Today you can bury yourself in people who virtually have the exact same mindset that you have, for example - Tea Party. So rather it's 140 characters at a time or a pic with no words at all, people are much more in touch and in tune with each other thanks to tech and social media. I'm not saying that is a good or bad thing, just a fact. Even that basement dweller living with his mom has a chance at normal relationships and finding real friends. Rather YOU like it or not. Social media has changed the world and everyone is using it. Heck even my 80 year old mother-in-law uses facebook daily. My mom is about as tech savvy as a box cut nail but even she uses it. And you are knocking it, but as Swish pointed out, you are using it too.
