But he apparently made no mention of augmenting the personnel staff to make sure the Browns are well-positioned for this pivotal offseason, in which they'll likely have the No. 1 overall pick and four in the first 50.
This is a mistake. We don't know that some efforts aren't being made to tweak a little here and there. I am sure everybody has looked back and saw somethings that stood out as a "opps". We will get there

Some people. I don't keep names in a book to catalog their thoughts. Acclaim is rather meaningless in real life. Doubly so on an online message board. Anyway, to keep it on discussion, I want to share a quote by Gregg Popovich, who IMO is the greatest basketball coach ever. Here is his thoughts on how to build a thriving organization. "A synergy has to form between the owner, whoever his president is, whoever the GM is, whoever the coach is. There’s got to be a synergy where there’s a trust. There (are) no walls. There is no territory. Everything is discussed. Everything is fair game. Criticism is welcome, and when you have that, then you have a hell of an organization. That free flow through all those people is what really makes it work. And that includes everything from draft to Os and Xs. Nothing should be left to one area – only to the president, only to the GM, only to the coach – or the culture just doesn’t form. At least that’s what’s worked for us." http://www.businessinsider.com/warriors-gm-bob-myers-inspired-by-gregg-popovich-quote-2015-12I really think that we're moving towards this system. Where nothing is off limits to discussion.

I don't know exactly what you just said, but I have not heard people talking about "blowing things up."

I still say letting Harbaugh slip through the cracks -- not closing the deal.
Championship Coach and a Championship Quarterback. Until then, we are swimming against the tide. Pretty simple.
Harbaugh has offered both everywhere he's been. Even when he has very little at Quarterback he seems to work miracles with them. Hue "the quarterback whisperer"?
Jimmy had a small window to turn everything around for something like a reported 3rd round pick. He didn't close the deal.
You snooze you lose.
The curse of Paul Brown and Art Modell lives.

j/c...for my timing bit...possibly. But most FBI investigations are ongoing for a year or two before they go to a grand jury. I'm ASSuming Haslam knew the upcoming problems and did what he did.
Anyways.
I like the set up we have. Yes, its different but for the "THE WORLD IS FLAT" people out there. Possibly we are going to start something others will follow.
The important thing and always has been is that everyone is on the same page. In the past we have not had that...there have been power struggles all the time. Possibly with Holmgren as he had all the power but quite frankly I thought he was a bit lazy and not all in.
I liked our draft...we got football players and over achievers. A good foundation to build on. We didn't go all in with FA and I'm always happy with it. I don't mind one or two key acquisitions, Young and have the best years ahead of them. I remember the ONE guy we went after was Warner??? leaving Miami and eventually signed with the Giants...he is playing great with the Giants. Even though we didn't get him I like the choice of who to go after.
I like the Collins pick up...now to sign him long term. RG3 was about as good as we could have done without giving up a lot on a risk. See Texans.
Next year if we are not into RG3 - I would love to see Cutler here. He has never had an OL like ours which is not bad in Pass Pro as Mr. "the game has passed me bye" Polan.
Its nice to see Jimmy and Dee who the later I think has been a good inclusion in this new foot print made.
Again I would like to see this through. We just saw the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria just set sail - saying that the ships will fall off the edge of the earth at this stage is a little too soon. I didn't like the change, change, change of Jimmy past but I sort of understand it, which is what I have decided over the years to do rather than sit back and look smart and criticize. My choice free country. I think Jimmy will be good especially once we start winning and building on the winning ways. I don't see his improvements of the facilities as a wrong thing. You have to Change and boy did we change this time. But I think we got the right HC and staff. I would love to fast forward 3 years from now. But I got to sit through the struggles. I understand also when you are down to your 3rd QB a rookie that was not being trained to start and have to rely on him to win is tough on any team. We all know that it was close to have 3-4 wins early on in the season that just for several reasons just did not happen.
So I for one HATE the fact that we are 0-12...I'm ready for us to start winning and then have to go through the POSTS of OH no we are going to lose the overall #1 pick...lol damned if you don't and damned if you do.

I like your positive stuff and don't like it when people immediately dismiss good points like this as homerism. But, EO, the thread is about our takes on his biggest mistake. I don't want to turn this into a Harbaugh thread, but ... not closing that deal is something that is huge, absolutely enormous to me. If he refuses to leave the Harbaugh's living room until that deal is closed our football world is turned around. I believe that. I'm am so out of touch that I actually believe that Jim Harbaugh is the only current guy who has b_ _ ls big enough to turn this around. I don't believe Saban could do it if we got him. No other current guy has what it takes. As I've said, and will repeat again, we need someone who can coach Paul Brown's ghost right off the field and into Lake Erie. You don't touch on "Championship Coach, Championship Quarterback" I don't see any hope if we ignore this point. To me its simple. The front office, analytics, Pilot, Dee, yada, yada... You guys talk about football and football people. Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Don Shula, Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, .... Ray Farmer would have lasted about two weeks before Harbaugh would have ... (never mind) Jimmy had his shot. He let it slip. No front office guy is going to turn the Cleveland Browns around. We need an exceptional leader. A football legend. A brilliant football guy,

Just one question...did Harbaugh want to come here...possibly its a moot point. I don't remember one hint that he wanted to come here and showed interest. If there was some interest at the very end...usually its a ploy to negotiate with other teams.
JMH?

JMH? I can only answer that question by saying, at that time, I was stunned that he actually acted like he would come. I was surprised at how he seemed to be open to it. Then, once I looked at him, it made sense. He is an oldschool Ohio born coach. He is a football guy. Plain and simple. He understands what the Cleveland Browns were and probably watched a lot of what happened after. If you're a football coach there is no bigger mountain to climb than this one. He understood that a place to make his mark would be to turn around the Browns. Nobody else can do it. His freakin ego is big enough to where he probably believes he could do it. I actually believe he may be the one guy on the earth who would really would want to do it. I think, he may think, he's up for the challenge. (He wasup for the challenge. I do not think it ever would have gotten out, not to the degree it did, if there wasn't fire near the smoke. At the time, the optics were that he was willing to come here but his wife shot it down. That is the way it was presented to us. I think the punch in the mouth fistfight he would have had with his brother twice a year is actually a positive for guys wired like he, his brother, and his Dad are. Yea, I think he may be the one guy who actually thought him coaching the Browns and fighting it out with the ratbirds (and the steelroids) would be cool. It would have been great drama, great for the AFC North, great for the AFC. Jim Harbaugh may end up being a football coaching legend. If he had come here and got us into a Super Bowl, he would have assured it. And, he knows it. He knows that if he turned this around, every coach shaking his hand after games would realize that they couldn't have done it. They just don't have the grit. I think he has the grit and a number of other qualities. Ultimately ... the dude is a winner.

I said it was a concern after hearing Haslams opening press conference and giving it some thought.
Haslam never "built a product" before. He only marketed a product. Fuel, the actual product, was a product which he purchased. Let's face it, whether it's Speedway, Murphy Oil, Pilot or any other fuel location, they bought the product, which is the fuel. Their only job is to make their business attractive so that is where we stop to buy the fuel. Marketing.
Buying an NFL team where you actually have to build a winning product is quite foreign to someone whose experience is in marketing an existing product.
He was out of his element from the beginning. Over his head. And secondly, he has not had the fortitude to stick with a plan to build a team. You can't build a winning team by changing coaching staffs and FO's as often as you change your underwear.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I agree with your post Pitt.. Although I am happy that the coaching situation has worked out how it has, because now we have Hue. We aren't winning, but the guys actually like playing for him. Glad he's here. Just gotta get more talent, and be more consistent too. And Hue has work to do as well with the offensive game plan. Always room for improvement.
