Interesting view.
Which plays are you talking about?

Isn't the general intent of any draw play to catch a defense offguard when they expect a pass?

Which plays are you referring to when you say not energetically pursue'?

Like I said i charted every play. Only 2 runs left of center and both Myles received a double from the lg and Lt. If that doesn't tell you what you need to know about myles as a run defender I don't know what else to say. He greatly improved this year in that manner.

candy...I will be watching or recording Garrett's final game.

I'm in the process of reviewing "every game" of Garrett's 2016 season. I want to give the man who might be the Browns first round draft pick, a fair assessment based on his entire 2016 performance.

I've got a few games to go before I make my decision and tonight's game will help...I hope he is 100% healthy.

As his college career likely comes to a close, Myles Garrett remains one of a kind

Sam Khan Jr.
ESPN Staff Writer

HOUSTON -- Kevin Sumlin remembers what it was like recruiting Myles Garrett.

At the time, Texas A&M’s brand was hot, coming off a 20-6 stretch in its first two SEC seasons and having a Heisman Trophy winner (Johnny Manziel) grab headlines, good or bad, on a daily basis. The Aggies were in the national spotlight. Garrett -- then the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2014 ESPN 300 and the No. 1 defensive end in the recruiting class -- was a crucial prospect for Sumlin and not an easy one to land. In fact, Sumlin remembers Garrett favoring another school before he decided to choose Texas A&M.

“Ohio State,” Garrett recalled on Tuesday.

Why?

“Paleontology,” said Garrett, the perpetual dinosaur lover.

It was Garrett’s older sister, Brea -- then a track and field standout for the Aggies -- who helped convince her younger brother to go to Aggieland. Myles became the blue-chip prize in a top-5 Texas A&M recruiting class.

Three years later, Garrett’s journey appears to be coming to a likely close as Texas A&M meets Kansas State in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl on Wednesday (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).

He hasn't said so, but this is likely Garrett’s final game in a Texas A&M uniform. He’s a virtual lock to go in the top 5 in the 2017 NFL draft should he declare for early entry, and there’s a good possibility he could go No. 1 overall. Two of his three seasons were affected by injuries -- including this one -- and that makes it a logical time to leave.

Garrett comes from a family of athletes, and he's equipped with enough sense to make shrewd business decisions about his career. But he didn't let the attraction of future dollars impact his decision to play in this game. When LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey announced their intentions to skip their respective bowl games to preserve their health and prepare for the draft, Garrett went the opposite direction, saying he would play in the Texas Bowl.

“I love my teammates,” Garrett said. “I'm never going to try and let them down. If I can go, I'm going to go until I can't draw a breath. I've just been competitive all my life. That draws from a competitive family. We're all athletes and we're all trying to win no matter what it is, whether it's Scrabble or basketball. I'm trying to win. Those two things together; I can't pull out just because of injury.”

Asked if he considered not playing because of what was at stake financially, Garrett huffed.

“It's just money,” he said. “I mean, the relationships I'll make during this time or the impressions I'll make on people around me will last forever. Money will come and go.”

It’s that awareness which has made Garrett such a treasure in Aggieland. Yes, Garrett’s on-field exploits are known by everyone on the outside and is the main reason he’s so revered by fans. Guys who are 6-foot-5, 270 pounds and perform the athletic feats he does -- "You just don’t find those guys,” said Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis. “They’re not out there.”

But Garrett was more than just your run-of-the-mill, cliché-filled football player. He showed himself to be a deep thinker, someone who doesn’t necessarily follow the crowd (see the deletion of his social media accounts or his willingness to discuss social issues from an educated place as evidence). Following a win over Tennessee on Oct. 8, he made a public plea for people to donate and/or pray for Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew (Garrett was one of 29 Texas A&M athletes and 15 football players to make a mission trip there over the summer). He was what Sumlin likes to call “a low-maintenance, great player,” someone who handled being the face of the program with grace and never did anything to bring negative attention to himself or to the program.

No, his career probably didn’t go exactly as planned, but it was still impressive. He broke Jadeveon Clowney’s freshman SEC sack record in 2014 with 11.5 sacks. Over the past three seasons, Garrett has the most sacks (32.5) of any FBS player.

Nearly half of those sacks came against non-Power 5 competition, which is something critics will certainly point to during the coming months of over-analysis that comes with NFL draft season. His freshman season was affected by torn ligaments in one of his hands (that injury required postseason surgery), and this season, he was limited by an ankle injury suffered when he was cut block in the Aggies’ Sept. 24 win over Arkansas.

He hasn’t been 100 percent since but played the rest of the season, save for two games. Against Tennessee on Oct. 5, he played only third downs. Against Mississippi State on Nov. 5, he was again limited to part-time duty. In the Aggies' final two games of the season, Garrett finally started feeling closer to his normal self.

“This guy was not healthy after Arkansas and is a dominant player,” Sumlin said. “And the fact that he wanted to play in games at 50 percent, whatever it was, third downs, whatever, with his teammates, says more about him than just his talent.”

His on-field impact was evident. Of his 48.5 career tackles for loss, 30 of them have come against Power 5 opponents. The one season he was healthy from start to finish was his best: 2015, when he finished with 12.5 sacks (nine versus Power 5 competition) and 19.5 tackles for loss (14.5 against Power 5 teams). He did things such as cover the quarterback and the running back on an option play, which shouldn’t be possible for a defensive lineman. He forced fumbles, blocked punts and generally made life hell for quarterbacks in the pocket when he was healthy. Chavis, with more than two decades of defensive coordinator experience in the SEC, didn’t hold back in praising Garrett.

“Myles is the best big athlete that I've ever been on the field with,” Chavis said. “There's no question. He's an outstanding young man, he has talent. You don't find guys that are 6-5-plus that can bend and turn and run. ... He can do that better than any big athlete I've been around.”

Tonight, he'll have one more chance to make a final, lasting impression.

Now Gyazo doesn't allow me to gif anything longer than ~4 seconds it seems, so you'll have to bare with me as the play lasts longer than gif. I'm going to post the video at the play time too, so we can have a great discussion in the same manner that Ed has provided us.

These are the plays where people call him lazy. Because he seems to not want to try when he believes other people will do their job. That play he gives up on it twice and as a result the player gets a first down in OVERTIME. These are not one time occurrences either, unfortunately.

https://youtu.be/YKETsLN1ECQ?t=910

He had one earlier here, which was less egregious because I think he had a hard time spotting the ball carrier to begin with.

https://youtu.be/YKETsLN1ECQ?t=243

If you click on those links it'll take you exactly to those plays.

That said, he had a great game against one of the bigger LTs in college football. Kept murdering him with the spin move and was able to attack the 3 gap constantly with little to no consequences.

If that safety doesn't whiff on the tackle it looks like Myles did his job on that play keeping the RB from bouncing outside. He even stopped to read the play and make sure it wasn't a screen.

Myles Garrett prefers not to play in cold-weather city in NFL

By Chase Goodbread
College Football 24/7 writer
Published: Dec. 27, 2016 at 02:52 p.m.

Myles Garrett, of course, has no say in which club drafts him and therefore no say in what kind of weather he'll eventually play in as a pro.

But that doesn't mean Texas A&M's star defensive end, a native of Texas, doesn't have a preference.

"Doesn't matter (who drafts me) ... but I'd like not to go anywhere cold," Garrett said Tuesday, per The Houston Chronicle. "Whoever picks me up, I'm going to try and play my best for, to be the best player on the field at any given time. It doesn't matter who picks me up, I'm going to try and be a franchise player for them."

Garrett, a junior, has yet to announce whether he will apply for early eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL Draft. Underclassmen have until a Jan. 16 deadline to do so.

As of this week, the Cleveland Browns, who certainly play their share of home games in chilly temps, have the inside track on the No. 1 pick of the draft. The San Francisco 49ers currently hold the No. 2 pick, though there is still a chance that the 49ers could pick first. Given that Garrett's draft intentions aren't yet official and the NFL draft order isn't yet set, it's premature to suggest that Garrett might end up needing a heavy winter coat next year. However, the Browns reportedly have an "astronomical grade" on the Aggies pass rusher. He's been compared to former Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles star Jevon Kearse.

Garrett (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) recorded 8.5 sacks this season despite a midseason ankle injury, suffered against Arkansas on Sept. 24, that hampered him for the remainder of the year. He recorded 11.5 and 12.5 sacks, respectively, in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

That was kind of my take on it also. To judge anything on that play we'd have to know what his defensive job was on that play.

I'd bet a lot of money that was Justin Evans who whiffed too. All he does is look for knockout shots. He can't tackle worth a damn unless it's him trying to put someone in the hospital.

It was Armani Watts who does a far worse job at tackling than Evans does. But agreed it's not a bad play by Garrett at all. The problem is the .gif cuts out about 4 yards before the play ends. Garrett stands about a yard back as the RB continues to truck his teammates for the first down. I'm not sure we're talking about the same time frame for the criticism. My criticism begins when the RB is already 3 yards down the field as Garrett begins his descent upon him.

Like I said they bait him to rush the outside edge knowing he is over aggressive at times and often avoid the inside rush because he prefers to come from the outside. Then they run at a thinned out run gap. If he had better tech and went on the inside more it would make it harder to make run plays. The fact that good LTs use good tech to stop his outside rush also shows his weakness as well.

Don't get me wrong I think he is a great player and truly talented but the kid does have some big holes in his game technique.

you're reading that play incorrectly.
In wing-T vernacular that's a Michigan trap, with the speed of today's D ends,it can only be ran against a 7-tech,which is where Garrett was.
He was fooled on that play, first he allowed the TE to cross his face, unimpeded. Now unblocked, his first instinct should have been "trap" but instead he turns his shoulders perpendicular to the LOS making an easy target for the wing back.
I don't know why this vid was shown, there isn't a DE in the world who hasn't been trapped a time or two, what I could surmise is that this is a big dude that moves very well.

I don't think it's a problem that he allowed the TE to cross his face unimpeded. Mainly, because it probably keyed him that it was a run play. Almost every pass play UCLA was having a TE or WR chip Garrett to try to slow him down. However, I still think he did a good job on the first part of the play. He played contain and was able to shed his blocker pretty well. I regiffed the play to better highlight what I was trying to talk about and why I linked it in the first place.

After the RB gets 3 yards past the LOS, Garrett kind of just quits on the play. He runs with it, but where is the effort to close? I get that it's a first down, but it is overtime. He should be trying to stop the RB. He has the explosiveness to get the RB, but doesn't. I think this is why people wrongly insist that he's lazy, because he has a couple of these plays per game. But it is somewhat a cause for concern.

I don't think he is lazy. I think he is just smart enough to be efficient with his effort. That can be both good and bad.

I don't think that play in ANY way shows him to be a lazy player.

I guarantee that if you watch film/cut-ups of any prospect you can finds plays where they "loaf".

And EVEN if he was loafing on this play (I don't agree that he is loafing) but even if he was you know what that means? he gets tired....and you know what? every player gets tired.

It also should be mentioned that 1) he's coming off a high ankle sprain and 2) he's is likely the top pick in the upcoming draft. You're not gonna get wild reckless abandon.

I do not think this play is cause for concern or that it shows a hole in his game.

Anyhow I see a TE who crosses his face on a way to a flat route, then TE #88 tries to trap block him which he avoids to pursue the ball carrier through the hole he has to avoid #14 wild ass lunge and hemaybe has a chance to lunge at the RB just when #23 makes his wild lunge but there's friendly fire potential there...

np I mean you already said, "I think this is why people wrongly insist that he's lazy..." so anyone with reading comprehension should be able to understand that.

IMHO all linemen get lazy from time to time. It is what it is. IMHO I don't see anything wrong with a player making a choice about being out of the play and saving the juice for the next play. That is if they are right about it or it's happening all the time. With Garrett he only does it occasionally and you don't have his physical form if you're lazy. The man has to exercise like a nut to be in that kind of shape.

Agreed with a lot of what you're saying. Now I don't want to call it loafing, because while that may be an accurate description from an outsider, these are high injury risk plays (Jumping into scrums), which he participates in pro bono. His insurance money, if he did get hurt, is a nice lump sum but no way equatable to the long and HoF career that he could very well have in the NFL. It'd be wrong to categorize any of his plays, with that type of responsibility weighing on him, as loafing.

That said, I would say that he's not finishing some plays. This is my cause for concern. But before I get into that, this is prior to him getting that ankle sprain in the Arkansas game. I believe this is the first or second game of the season, when Garrett is 100% healthy. My problem arises that this is happening in overtime, where they only need to stop UCLA 3 more times after this play to end the game. I do have to question the situations where he does not finish the play.

Now I don't want to make a mountain out of a mole hill here, but I do want to voice some concern I have. Collins got ripped to shreds on here against the Giants as he couldn't get to OBJ earlier this year. It is not my intention to do that here, but I do want to voice my concern. Even if it does sound like I'm ripping him to shreds.

I've never heard (or read) that Garrett is lazy.

My only concern about him is wondering if he takes himself out of the play too often with how wide an angle he comes at the QB. I feel like most NFL QB's will take advantage of that and use it to step forward for an open throwing lane.

Eh, I wouldn't worry too much. He has a killer spin move that a lot of tackles aren't ready for. I also don't think his angle is ever really that wide. I think he'll get a lot more pressures at the next level as a lot of teams that operate from shotgun are throwing the ball before Garrett can even engage with the tackle across from him.

I didn't watch the game, but espn has him credited with 1 total tackle. Not sure if he didn't play the whole game or not.

KSU avoided him like the plague. Did not run at him, and attempted quicker passes. He got pressure a few times but KSU tried their best to take him out of the game.

Top defensive grades:

ED Myles Garrett, 85.0
DI Reggie Chavis, 80.9
S Justin Evans 80.8
LB Otaro Alaka, 78.8
CB Donovan Wilson, 77.8

Garrett grades well in what is likely last collegiate game

Potential top-five NFL Draft pick Myles Garrett had a solid performance in what was likely his last college game. He accounted for three of the Aggies’ four pressures on the quarterback and also recorded a QB hit. Garrett made his presence known in the run game as well even if the stats don’t reflect it, as he graded at a 82.8 against the run, forcing cuts and filling up lanes.

If 1 tackle earns a player an 85.0 grade...I don't think much of those judging the play on the field.

I have watched a bit of the game and I notice a DE for Kansas, #75 I believe..he is all over the field and appears to have a high output motor. Didn't see him giving up on plays and such...need to watch the whole game.

I only watched the first half, but I counted three runs at Garrett in a half. A QB draw to the 7 hole for a TD. Garrett was tasked with rushing the three hole during the play. A 2 yard sweep that went right past Garrett, because Myles did a spin move early and didn't see the play was right at him. Another 2 yard gain, this time the RB just jukes Myles Garrett, delaying him enough so a Olinemen could block him in the back (Uncalled), out and bounces it across the field for a 15 yard game.

Found the game if anyone wanted to watch.

He did well. There were a few run plays I would like to see a #1 pick make but it seems like in their system he either gets the assignment to crash or set the edge so I can't fault him. Basically he didn't mess up. Played his assignment, showed good pursuit but the other 10 aggies got tore up on a reg basis.

. Multiple times he pinched the edge so well they cut back and destroyed his teammates for huge gains. Like CHS said maybe 2 or 3 plays he could've showed his dominance better but he got blocked in the back, stupidly spun on a run play.

As a pass rusher you can't ask any better. They are a run team and I didn't count a pass over 4 sec the whole 1st half. Yet he still ended with 3 pressures. Still didn't see his trademark burst though. His ankle must still not be 100. Hes still not 2015 garrett yet.

As a pass rusher you can't ask any better. They are a run team and I didn't count a pass over 4 sec the whole 1st half. Yet he still ended with 3 pressures. Still didn't see his trademark burst though. His ankle must still not be 100. Hes still not 2015 garrett yet.

+1

I also wanted to add there were quite a few plays that were so blatant, where the OT had a handful of his jersey.

You are so obvious.

You saw the stat line and decided to ask that question. Not sure why you hate the guy so much, other than you want the Browns to draft only offensive linemen, but the act is old..........especially the crap about him being lazy.

Vers I think you're reading too much into it. It looked like a sincere question to me as I also did not get to see the game and has the same question in my head ^^

You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

vers...you would be WRONG AGAIN!

I did not see the game and did not see any freaking stat lines.

While we are on the subject of Garrett...did you watch the Stanford-NC game...did you notice "the motor" that Stanford's DT #90 had?...that kind of ball player is worth a high draft pick.

Keep in mind Mac, Thomas was absolutely gassed late in the game.

I don't think Garrett is lazy, but I don't think he is high motor either.

I'd be fine with taking him at one or getting Allen.
