Can we draft Darnold this year and let him play out his eligibility at USC? Maybe we can trade them Kessler for Darnold? Kessler started over Darnold last year. What's your point? Kessler was a senior and returning starter Darnold was a true freshman

With only one season under his belt are you sure he won't turn into a pumpkin like Mark Sanchez?

Man...the B1G completely choked this season.

Seriously, SERIOUSLY impressed with Darnold.
Wow. He is the next Manning, Luck, etc and will be the no-brainer easy #1 pick when he declares.

Man...the B1G completely choked this season. Really thought Penn State had that one. Didn't watch most of the game, but turned it on just in time for to allow the game to be tied. Aaaand proceed to choke down the stretch.

I agree w/you that most of the bowl games have been greatly diminished in importance, especially since the advent of the playoff.
Even during the BCS era, the bowl games lost a lot of their luster.
For us older guys, we remember when the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Orange Bowl were must-see TV and drew a ton of attention.
Nick Saban had some interesting comments on this subject last week before their game against Washington. He didn't seem real pleased w/the new system.
Then again, as the great Joni Mitchell once wrote: "Well something's lost, but something's gained..."

Pre-BCS era, the bowls meant more because it was another round of games to determine the champion. Of course there wasn't a playoff, so you'd have 1 vs. 15, 2 vs. 7, and 3 vs. 9, 4 vs. 6, etc. So in that sense, yes, they were more important because if #15 beat #1, then #2, #3 and maybe #4 were in line to jump up if they won.
That's not to say they were all high drama. #1 would normally beat #15 and the season would be over. Nobody is tuning in the Holiday or Cotton bowl because a champion was going to be crowned within it.
After the BCS, and now the CFP, the bowls are less meaningful because there's no drama at all. They're NFL draft showcase exhibitions, assuming the draftees still want to play or give it their all (which I'm all for the guys sitting out to preserve their draft projections).

Could more of the bowl games be used in a bigger playoff? Absolutely. However, add anymore and you ruin the regular season.
I actually enjoy turning on a #4 vs. #8 match-up in week 3 because both teams know they probably have to win if they have any hopes of the playoff. As of now, if you're a Power 5 conference and you have 1 loss, you're probably getting in. There's no guarantee, but you're allowed one mistake, provided you were blown out at home.
If we move to an 8-team playoff, that same week 3 match-up becomes almost unimportant. Look who was ranked 8th in the final CFP rankings, Wisconsin with 3 losses. Do you really want a 3-loss team in the playoffs? And if you do, that means a team getting their 2nd loss early in the season still means their in play for the playoff. While there would be more options, I think it would devalue the regular season. College football would then become like college basketball, nobody would get worked up over the regular season outcomes.
I don't care about the extra games and money of an expanded 8 or 16-team playoff, I care about making the regular season become a footnote to the championship. I like how every week is a huge deal. I like how PSU got bumped out of the CFP because they had 2 losses and 1 of those losses was a blowout. It matters.

The old bowl games are going the way of the old NIT in College basketball.

Go Clemson!
Actually, I don't care who wins. I just want a close game after those terrible wildcard games over the weekend.
