When were you paid to scout? It wasn't that long ago you were teaching in jr. high. How did you have a paid job scouting, when you were teaching, and coaching?

Ok guys can we chill please. I don't care who starts it or what is or has been said. This is hardly anything to warrant people being ugly to each other. I enjoy this place during draft season but if this continues I will definitely not return.

I feel the need to jump in the middle because I honestly think you're both right but as men we all want to be right.

Im not a huge college fan so when people statted talking about him i [censored]. He occasionally breaks down too soon instead of closing the gap. But that's nitpicking and he is far better than most fs in this respect.

However I am a stats guy so when I saw the breakdown I did my homework and found those kisses primarily come from a combination of when his technique breaks down leaving too much open field for the runner to cut or when he goes for a big hit. The stats do not lie the misses where there.

However it's how those missed tackles happened and the fact that the number is a smaller sample size than most that makes me believe he really is very similar to Thomas and reed in that regard. I believe with how natural of a tackler he is that if he had another season those stats would even out. For a fs he really is pretty good. Also while reed and Thomas were good they were so good no one remembers when they made mistakes. They all do its just in retrospect they look like gold standards. There's a psychological term for that but I can't recall it.

Why in the world is my post censored? There's no reason it should be and it won't let me edit. Whatever.

Basically what I meant is he Flys downhill for outside runs. He's so fast I did see a miss or two in my tape. However in mid field he breakdown really well for a fs. I'd like him to close the hole a few more steps as that gives the back more room to cut and also gave him a few misses. In general though I think the high miss % is a product of his inexperience and small sample size. He has good technique and arm length to make every tackle he just needs to hone his craft.

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

STRENGTHS: Gifted athlete with impressive blend of burst, body control and reflexes. Outstanding play speed, covering a lot of green. Magnet to the ball due to his cover awareness, field vision and range. Transfers weight to smoothly open his hips, turn and run without gearing down. Impressive lower body explosion and leaping skills. Unique timing/anticipation to break on the ball and make plays most defensive backs don't. Elite ballskills with the innate ability to find, judge and disrupt the catch point. Long arms and strong hands to finish interceptions - finished second in the FBS with seven pick-offs in 2016. Playmaker with the ball in his hands with 181 yards (25.9 average) and three touchdowns on interception returns in 2016 (had another return for a score that was called back due to a phantom penalty). Explosive tackler and doesn't need a runway to create momentum. Fast angles working downhill with range to clean up plays his teammates miss. Uses his length to lasso ballcarriers out of his reach. Experienced on special teams coverages.

Must be an article written by another VD person. rolleyes

ed, I have watched Hooker way more than you. Do you wanna dispute that? I was paid to scout. Were you? I am saying that Hooker is the real deal and no matter how many times you wanna bad mouth him, the fact won't change that Hooker is going to be an outstanding football player.

Cheers.

Can you give the link and show the weaknesses? Or do they not support your narrative?

I think Hooker will be one of the top players out of this draft, but, right now, he's not a great tackler.

He can make great tackles, but he needs to clean up his angles and get a better feel in open space. He whiffed a few times which you can't do as the last line of defense.

He shows the willingness to be a good tackler, but I think he just needs more experience to get all the way there.

Due to the way the Draft breaks down, I'm looking at him at 1-1. Prefer to get more value with a trade down, but the drop off at safety after the top 2 seems a lot more extreme than at edge rusher.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-pff-scouting-report-malik-hooker-s-ohio-state/

Name: Malik Hooker

School: Ohio State

Position fit: Safety

Stats to know: His seven interceptions tied for the most in the country, while his tackling efficiency ranked 136th

What he does best:
•Has the natural speed, athleticism that can’t be coached
•Has the agility, closing speed to recover even when he takes a false step or turns the wrong way
•Elite range, tracking skills
•When he picks one off he has the speed and vision to score from anywhere on the field
•Trust his reads and breaks earlier than any safety in the class

Biggest concern:
•Doesn’t bring his arms to wrap up on tackles
•Limited feel for inside running game – tends to run himself out of plays, gaps
•Gets overly aggressive against both the run and pass, will overrun assignments
•Leaves his feet too often, causing him to miss tackles
•When he is the underneath safety playing zone, he struggles to consistently identify target
•From zone coverage tends to attack the first thing he sees and leaves himself susceptible to being out of position
•Must improve pedal technique for man coverage – gets upright, too far on his heels

Player comparison: Reggie Nelson, Oakland Raiders

Nelson is a rangy free safety who is capable of making game-changing plays on the back end with his ability to outplay receivers for the ball in the air and net significant returns. Nelson has never graded significantly above-average against the run during his NFL career.

Bottom line:

Hooker is very much a projection at this point, as he has the athletic skill set to be an impact player, but his all-around game is clearly undeveloped as of now. His ability to track the ball and outplay receivers in the air is unmatched, as evidenced not only by his seven interceptions, but the content of the plays. His athletic ability is such that he is capable of staying with virtually any slot receiver in the league in man coverage situations, and he has some experience with this from college. Ohio State often used him as a single-high free safety, but when he was asked come into the box in run support or in underneath coverage he had significant struggles. Hooker missed 13 tackles on the season while managing just 17 stops
