http://finance.yahoo.com/news/alibaba-founder-jack-ma-brutal-135400213.htmlAlibaba founder Jack Ma has a brutal theory of how America went wrong over the past 30 yearsDAVOS, Switzerland — Alibaba founder Jack Ma thinks America went wrong over the past 30 years by focusing too much on war and Wall Street. Speaking at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, Ma was asked about globalisation and the reaction to it represented by the election of Donald Trump as US president. He responded that back when Thomas Friedman published "The World Is Flat" in 2005, globalisation looked like "a perfect strategy" for the US: "We just want the technology, and the IP, and the brand, and we'll leave the other jobs" to other countries like Mexico and China, he said. "American international companies made millions and millions of dollars from globalisation," Ma said. As an example of just how much was available, Ma said, "When I graduated from university I tried to buy a beeper, and it cost me $250. My pay at the time was $10 a month." "IBM, Microsoft," he added, "the profit they made was larger than the top four banks in China put together ... But where did the money go?" (US soldiers during a firefight with Taliban forces in Barawala Kalay Valley in Afghanistan's Kunar province in 2011.Pfc. Cameron Boyd / Wikimedia, CC) Ma said that 30 years ago the American companies that people in China heard about were Ford and Boeing. Today the companies that people in China talk about are in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street. At the same time, the US spent a lot of money on foreign conflicts. "In the past 30 years, America had 13 wars spending $2 trillion ... no matter how good your strategy is you're supposed to spend money on your own people," Ma said. "The money goes to Wall Street. Then what happened? Year 2008 wiped out $19.2 trillion in US income ... What if the money was spent on the Midwest of the United States?" "The other countries steal jobs from you guys — that is your strategy. You did not distribute the money in the proper way." Elsewhere during his talk, Ma said his favourite film was "Forrest Gump" because he saw something of Alibaba in Gump's shrimp boat. Ma quoted Gump as saying "Nobody makes money catching whales — people make money catching shrimps." "That's how we make money" at Alibaba, he said. He also revealed that he wanted to retire early: "I don't want to die in my office," he said. "I want to die on the beaches."

they misquoted him in the article.
if you watch the video, which fellow homeboy Lurker had posted in FB, what he said was over the last 30 years, we spent $14 trillion
14 trillion......we got the cash to spend on war, but the moment liberals talk about spending that money to take care of our own people, conservatives lose their ever loving minds about it.
got the money to kill, but we're broke when it comes to saving lives.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

It's the Christian thing to horde all your wealth, sit on it, and demand more tax cuts.

As a conservative, it's true that I'm not a fan of shelling out money that we don't have. However, as a non-hypocrite, I believe that blade should cut both ways. The military, being a government entity, is up there with the best of them in terms of wasting money. They get a pass and a blank check because of what they do.
I'm a fan of the military, and I respect the hell out of people that choose to serve (in whatever capacity), but NOBODY should get a pass for fiscal irresponsibility.

What could 14 trillion have done to make our society better in the past 30 years?
End poverty? Prevent homeless? Invest in infrastructure/roads/flying cars? Invest in US businesses to create more high-tech startups? Invest in research to cure diseases? Invest in our children's education?

In theory you're not supposed to, but in practice many claim "God gave me this wealth, and I will sit on it. Give me more tax cuts, have the less fortunate figure it out themselves, and I shouldn't do anything to help."
Gandhi said it best with "I like your Christ, but I don't like your Christians."

Guy basically states if you love God as much as he does God will make you rich like him. Just buy his books and tithe at his church and he'll show you the way that he's gotten in God's good graces enough to live in a $10.5 million dollar home. Meanwhile, for all intents and purposes, teaching that if you're poor it's because you've turned away from God and are getting what you deserve. There's a special place in hell for guys like him...

Christian ideals say don't do it, but many Christians like to ignore the Social Justice Gospel of Christ.

Here's just one example. Luke 12:13-21
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Link Your richness towards God comes from your actions, your willingness to give all you do to help others (much like Christ gave Himself for everyone), and live a life that tries to impact the world in a positive way. Arguing that "those poor people...they're just lazy" or "I need more tax cuts!" spits in the face of the Social Justice Gospel. And before I get an argument that says "you're being greedy towards those who have money"...you misunderstand my point. It's not about "taking money away", but it's more about using all that you have to help make the world a better place. Donating is good, but go the extra mile. Don't donate just because it gives you a silly tax write off. I find it disingenuous to donate just because of a tax write off. That's not authentic donations.

I generally side with conservative principals from a fiscal standpoint. I'd be all for military cuts, in fact I recall stating such when Bernie wanted all of his free stuff. I'm all for giving back, and I wouldn't mind a small (which Bernie's was NOT) increase to help with medical and school. I personally think the government could find most of the money they need if they look within and make cuts across the board. Nothing is exempt. 14 trillion on war is insane.

And look at the supporters/donors to Joel Olstein has. If they want to part with their money on false premises, that's fine. If they start parting with YOUR money, I have an issue.

It's the Christian thing to horde all your wealth, sit on it, and demand more tax cuts. It's a teachers thing to molest students, Ride them like a Triple Crown Winning Jockey, and demand more sex from them. http://www.vocativ.com/usa/education-usa/teacher-student-sex-crimes-become-national-crisis/If your going to lump every person who calls themselves a Christian together, then why not lump everybody who calls themselves teachers together.

Tons of good comments here!
Its really sickening isn't it how our government just wastes money...they just pee it right now the drain.
20 trillion dollars would fix a lot of problems in this country and created lots of jobs for people, and probably solved our health care and social security issues all together.
its really sickening...that 20 trillion they have peed down the drain would have guaranteed the prosperity of the American people for many generations had it been invested into this country instead of wasted away on useless wars, foreign aid, and bailing out banks...
just imagine the nation we would have if that money would have been smartly invested here...:(
