I often wonder why posters worry so much about what a contract looks like money-wise, esp. in this age where teams can manage the cap better.
We needed to start keeping our better players, as you stated, and so I don't care if we "overpaid" to keep a good player on the roster.
I'm glad we got this done early.

Last week, Jason La Canfora was the first to report a coming contract extension for Cleveland Browns OLB Jamie Collins. La Canfora specifically said that the deal was “expected to be done by the weekend,” which means a lot of Browns fans have been eagerly anticipating news of the extension.

So, what’s the latest? Nothing much, but Sunday evening, fans who followed the Browns on the NFL app received an alert saying that Collins has signed an extension with the Browns. Is it official? It’s kind of hard to say. The alert showcased a video with a voiceover from Browns.com’s Nathan Zegura.

The narration begins with, “Collins and the Browns have come to terms on a contract that will keep Collins with the Browns for the next four seasons [through 2020].” The narration goes on for another minute, talking about Cleveland’s long-term plan for retaining key talent.

Sounds good, right? Except that it’s the only place you’ll find the deal reported — the Browns’ mobile app. It is highly unlikely that the Browns would willingly choose to release such news on that outlet only, as opposed to Browns.com and other outlets. It almost seems like someone jumped the gun and set the news to post prematurely. While I imagine that Cleveland will still announce the signing of Collins soon, imagine how embarrassing it’d be for the aforementioned video to get out, and then negotiations stalled.

The report from a few days back that the Browns would be bringing back linebacker Jamie Collins is done, as NFL.com is reporting it’s a four-year deal.

While no numbers are being reported as of yet, there was a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Friday that stated the deal yearly would make him the highest paid LB in the league.

Kuechly inked a five-year deal back in 2015 worth $61,801,565.

The 27-year-old was acquired from the Patriots for a compensatory third-round pick. He made the Pro Bowl and was named 2nd Team All-Pro in 2015.

The NFL frowns upon news being announced the same day as playoff games. I'd expect we hear something new at some point on Monday (1/23).

Yeah, I'm not seeing anything either. I think it's awesome we allegedly got him inked up for four years, but heck it's hard to get excited when the #s and anything concrete/official is unknown.

I wouldn't worry about Josh at this point. After Pryor, I'd work on Crow, Bitonio, and a few others we can now extend. That is how you get in to affordable deals.

I've noticed a trend that if you resign your own FA the guarantee for his level is almost always 35 to 45%. Only in FA do they really exceed that. So let's hope for 20 to 24 mil guaranteed

A Pro Bowl selection, All-Pro honoree and Super Bowl champion, Collins was acquired from New England via trade on Oct. 31. He started all eight games with the Browns and totaled 69 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, two sacks and one forced fumble. In total for the 2016 season, he appeared in 15 games and logged 112 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, three sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Collins is 6-3, 250 pounds and entering his fifth NFL season out of Southern Mississippi. Originally selected by New England in the second round of the 2013 draft, he has appeared in 58 games with 49 starts. He has totaled 354 career tackles, 12.5 sacks, five interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one defensive touchdown and one blocked extra point. In 2015, he earned his first career Pro Bowl selection and was named to the Associated Press All-Pro second team. He led New England in tackles and played every defensive snap during the team’s win in Super Bowl XLIX. He led the Patriots in tackles in 2014 and 2015.
