The contract extension for #Browns LB Jamie Collins: 4 years, $50M, source said. $26M in guarantees. Large. https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/823663016352894976

I honestly think in FA it's much more likely he would've gotten more than less. While everyone compares his contract to Keucklys(sp?) He's more of a hybrid specialist between a pass rusher and traditional lb. Basically his skill set is very rare and Jack of all trades are important chess pieces in today's defensive game.

This is a very good thing for us. He's a good player and wants to be here, coulda gotten more in FA probably.

Not to get too far afield, but I heard Bruce Matthews on the radio today and he was talking about how disappointed he was that brother Clay wasn't in the HOF along with him. He said one of the reasons was that Clay was so versatile, and could play weak side and rush the passer, play strong side and protect the edge as well as cover the TE, and he could also move inside and stop the run. As a result, he said (I'm paraphrasing), Clay got moved around a lot and never got to truly make his mark as the wrecking ball LB he could have been. (Like his son is.) If that's the kind of LB Jamie Collins is, then we have made a great signing today.

Only Kuechly makes more (by $1 million) in guarantees. It's definitely an overpay when compared to other players at his position, but Collins was hitting the market at the right time.

Where ever Clay was, he was great. He is long overdue.

It's a minor overpay, all things considered. Especially having to pay a "bad" tax.
Collins is really a good player, so paying him slightly over market value is perfect.
you had a good run Hank.

my question is: could he have gotten that elsewhere? Who cares? I mean, really man, are you just looking to crap on the team and FO. I don't know, and neither do you. You could say that about anybody you sign if they aren't slotted rookies. Maybe he could have gottn more? We signed him for something we were willing to pay and something he was willing to sign. End of story.

End of story. +1 We're way under the cap AND we're carrying over $50m from this past season. What does it matter if we're $1-2m over in this signing? We're swimming in cap space. I know, I know, you can get out of control with big free agents, but by the time we near the cap ceiling, if we ever do, this contract would be below market value and we could cut him.

Hey, I'll take the deal. I was beyond prepared that if by chance he truly was open to signing here and etc, his guaranteed money would have to been high as well as his annual.
But he's a good player. We need good players. Offense, defense, special teams - we need em' all around.
Dawgs4Life asked if he could've gotten that elsewhere... my answer - doubtfully. JMO

Yeah he might have, & he might not have, and I don't care either way. We got him signed, he obviously wants to be a Brown - and wanted a good payday too, of course - and so all is good.
Edit: and I wasn't being critical of dawg4's question, either.

Glad to hear we signed one of our own .... especially after passing on everyone last year.
I think that Collins is a guy who can play everywhere, and can/has even played on the DL at times for NE. I think that he can be a building bl;ock for the defense.
Now let's get Pryor signed and pull off the trade for Cousins. (I can't believe i am saying that, because I really did not.like him coming out of college)

No doubt, Punch.
There comes a time where you have to spend the money or be fined by the NFL. As far under as we have been the past few years, we were probably nearing that point.
I'd rather spend some over and have a proven player then not have a player and send a check to the NFLPA to distribute.
Some act like it is THEIR money being spent.
As long as Jimmy is willing to write the check, I don't worry about cap space all that much. Especially when we are a $Zillion under.

The structure of the deal means everything.
If his entire first year is guaranteed, that's about half of the total guarantees. I am hoping for this, because there is zero chance of cutting him in the first year of the deal. Then the other half of the guarantees would be spread out over 4 years.
13.5 mil / 4 = 3.375 mil a year.

13.5 mil / 4 = 3.375 mil a year. Spotrac or overthecap will probably have the breakdown sooner rather than later. I was also interested in the annual contract breakdown. It does make sense for any deals signed this offseason to be front-loaded due to the available cap space.

Guys chill. I like comparing and talking about contracts. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean you have to put us down. It in no way means we don't support the move so shut up and let us discuss money please and thanks.

Some act like it is THEIR money being spent. Someone says this about every team, every off-season and it makes little sense. If you care about the team, you are allowed to care if the money is being spent wisely.

It was directed at anyone of the multiple people who keeps pushing the "were way over the cap why do you care" bs. I enjoy cap discussion but everyone takes it negatively and keeps attacking us.

People around here make fun of the "Harvard Boys", but when it comes to numbers and contracts, if not football decisions, and how they fit in to the long term health of the team, I am very confident they have a plan and how the timelines are going to work.

Got it. I enjoy talking about contract breakdown and cap discussions. I wish there were more of it around here. Same. I've always referenced how successful teams manage it in different ways but it usually gets disregarded. The % of cap spenditure on certain position groups can give you some insight on what could happen in FA especially. Like this year. We need to upgrade CB but thanks to Joe our cap hit for that position is already near league leaders. So if we were to bring in someone like johnson for LA it's just so unlikely Joe stays without restructuring because of the % of cap going to cb. It's a nice tool to help understand and predict future happenings.

Fair comment there. I wasn't 'attacking' anyone but I guess I sounded dismissive of those posts. My bad, not my intent.

There's room for all discussion. As a fan most people sway positive and of course there are those that are negative but I prefer to evaluate everything from the outside looking in with no attachment for a true perspective.

That is way, way too much. Collins is not a pass rusher. That would make him the highest paid linebacker among players that are similar (non-pass rushing linebackers, Kuechly, Marshall, Cushing, Lee, etc.). Well, I like your numbers better, between 18-21 million a year, but ....

Williams has to be VERY Happy! His type of player coming from his type of program. I'd expect him to get real busy at the Senior Bowl finding some more pieces he needs.
