Ethics office recommends Kellyanne Conway investigation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The government’s ethics watchdog is recommending that the White House investigate and possibly discipline President Donald Trump’s counselor Kellyanne Conway.

In a letter made public Tuesday, the Office of Government Ethics wrote to White House attorneys that there’s reason to believe that Conway violated the standards of ethical conduct for executive employees by endorsing Ivanka Trump’s fashion line during a television interview last week.

The letter notes lawyers for the White House and OGE spoke on Feb. 9 — the day of Conway’s interview — and that the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Oversight Committee asked OGE to follow up.

“Go buy Ivanka’s stuff, is what I would tell you,” Conway said during the interview. “It’s a wonderful line. I own some of it. I fully — I’m going to just, I’m going to give a free commercial here: Go buy it today, everybody. You can find it online.”

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said last week that Conway has been “counseled,” but the OGE said it has yet to receive any guidance on what if anything happened as a corrective action. The OGE is requesting that White House lawyers tell them in writing by Feb. 28 what they’ve done about the matter.

Federal ethics rules state that public employees may not use their positions “for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity.”

Conway’s plug came Nordstrom dropped Ivanka Trump’s line of products.

What else is there to do?

Unless there's some indication she was getting paid or compensated for it, there really isn't anything else to do.

Counseling in many jobs is on the rung of Disciplinary measures. You have verbal counseling for one off, minor infractions (seemingly like this), you have written counselings for more serious infractions or repeat issues, suspensions, and on up to termination.

Well it is enough that the ethics agency thinks it warrants investigation, just saying.

And overall, were seeing a pattern of misconduct on a damn near weekly basis......and it hasn't even been a whole month yet.

People slammed Hillary for being corrupt and not having ethical codes.

Let's say I agree with that. So......why is the things coming out of D.C. being excused then? Why isn't the same amount of outrage over corruption and ethics being expressed by conservatives?

Is it because they don't care? Or is it because it matters WHO is doing it? As long as it's their guy, it's A Ok.

They're investigating the counselling and punishment for the violation no doubt. Like what exactly was she counselled about? How long did the counselling take and what was the reprimanded punishment extended for her part in the ethics violations.

No punishment? Just a little lecture on keeping this Trump Inc biz on the down low? A wink and a sweep under the rug from Trump Inc. is not going to cut it here.

If the shoe was on the other foot the conservatives would be calling for heads to roll on Capitol hill. Maybe time for a taste of their own medicine not that I condone that sort of thing, because I think it's childish to act like many conservatives did for the last 8 years.

If she didn't know this was a violation, then the counseling is enough for a first time offense. Heck, we have congressmen that have stock in companies making laws that directly help said companies, and they're not getting into trouble. I half want to give her the benefit of the doubt.

The flip side is that I suspect she knew and did it anyway - there seems to be an air about this administration that they can do what they want without repercussion, and this was just a test. At some point they need to be held accountable, and maybe it is best to have the investigation.

I wonder if the rumblings that conservatives being concerned (paraphrasing) about the administration and now Flynn's resignation were triggers for the OGE?

I'm not excusing or downplaying anything, but don't you guys understand how stupid your side looks by trying to over hype and inflate minor issues such as this?

According to OCD's article the OGE isn't actually calling for an investigation... further down it states that they hadn't received any official statement from the WH on how the situation was handled and what the results were aside from Spicer's statement.

I think that's totally fair to ask for.

But you guys have to stop misapplying words in the name of pushing an agenda. Saying an investigation should be started implies it is suspected but unconfirmed there was wrong doing. Every knows what she did was wrong. Even the WH implicitly admitted that when they said she was counseled for it.

She broke a rule which isn't the same as a law.

Out of curiosity what is it that you want done to her? Jailed? Fined? Fired? What in your minds is an acceptable punishment?

at some point the Left is going to have to start responding and reacting to things with a rationale sense of proportion and scale. America is tired with the non-sensical sky is falling BS over everything. When they scream "Look! Look what Trump is doing!" and they hear crickets, it's because no one cares what a liberal says anymore.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but the Left in general has a credibility issue that they still have yet to acknowledge or begin to address.

Devil I feel they should be given a chance, I mean a minority vote elected them so they won fair and square and I have no issue with that. I also think they should be given a little slack for stumbles and bumbles early on... BUT 4 WEEKS IN AND THAT IS ALL THERE HAS BEEN!

At some point, the standard has to be met. If we kept making exception to the rules then there won't be a rule anymore.

To me it's more comical than anything. It shows that when you elect someone who doesn't have a clue, it shows. While it is a clear violation of ethics rules, to me, it's on a very minor scale. It makes for good fodder to get the other sides dander up but I don't consider it anything serious.
