Yeah, it does. The mom is dead. He, the dad, is facing life in prison. The 10 month old, Winston, will grow up without a mom or dad.

He's in the regional jail not more than 3 miles from me.

He's in there with people convicted of drunk driving, domestic violence, etc.

And James Worley is in there as well, He is charged with murdering 21 (I think she was 21) Sierah Joughin, near Toledo.

Man. The kids is gonna grow up in a system.

And the stats on kids growing up through the system.....ugh. Hopefully he doesn't end up a statistic, but the odds are already stacked against him, and he didn't even do anything wrong.

We often laugh at the whole idea of "snowflakes", but these kids are going to have to go out into the real world one day ..... and many of them are simply going to be unable to function. These schools are not doing them a service by perpetuating the inability to deal with different opinions and failing to help them learn conflict resolution.

I was at the store today. My bill was $100.33 I handed the the cashier (a maybe 20 year old girl) $100.50. She accidentally punched in that I gave her $150.00. At first she started to hand me $49 dollars but then caught her mistake and was frozen for a moment. I told her she punched in the wrong amount, suddenly she grabbed her phone to use the calculator. I told her she owed me 17 cents, she put the phone down and handed me my change and thanked me. I can't imagine not being able to make that change in my head...

I have long advocated for the school curriculum to include basic life/job skills. Kids should understand how to address people in a business environment, how to make change, conflict resolution, professional speech and basic professional writing, how to create a resume, and so forth. This could easily be worked into one class, and into one semester of High School.

We learned to make change in grade2,3,or4 can't really remember, but it's so basic. I call it the dumbing down of America. Young people never have to learn anything when they can just google it, but this leads to lack of critical thinking, good reasoning skills, low ambition, and lack of innovation in a large percentage of the age group.

You can't put them all in that mold, but I see so many especially in low wage jobs. Getting a degree of any kind requires a certain aptitude in math, but I've seen plenty of college grads that have poor reasoning, logic and common sense.

I wish they would take the computers out of schools until they learn the basics, then focus heavily on computer skills, real world skills and advanced education later. I also think it's ridiculous that our kids don't go to school year round taking a couple of two week breaks or so to avoid burn out. They are getting left behind by the rest of the world. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the way it seems to me.

Where snowflakes meltdown.

Donnies a huge proponent of safe spaces ... unlike your boy who had balls made of brass, Donnie hates and shies away from confrontation or conflict ... he's a big ole wuss ....

It isn't the year round thing....it is the extended summer that is the issue. AND, I say that as a teacher! The UK school year is longer with a shorter summer holiday, however, they get more breaks throughout. So, in reality the kids may actually have the same allocated class time as many American students do (seat/class time hours varies from state to state, but, those with longer required hours are probably at or near the same as students in Britain). So, British school kids will finish in late July and go back around the same time as US schools (early Sept). But, they also get a week off in Oct, 2-3 weeks at Christmas, a week in Feb, 2 weeks for Easter. By spreading this out it allows students and teachers to recharge their batteries and the summer isn't so ridiculously long that they forget everything they learned (math, in particular) nor get bored.

When we returned to the States with our two kids the summers were so long that we used to do 20 minutes a day of math in workbooks with them and they would read everyday and write during the week. Not essays or book reports or anything overly taxing. But, they would do creative writing...stories, journaling about their holiday etc. We would also work with them on learning cursive. In England even at a young age they were learning to write in cursive....when we returned to the states it wasn't taught. Everybody printed. Even in our technological & typed world we wanted them to know how to read and write cursive. This all definitely helped when they returned in September after 9-10 weeks off! My son is now a junior in high school and taking some IB classes. My daughter graduated last year and getting her Associates to be a Vet Tech.

You know Old, we've butted heads before but I must say that was a good post. I really enjoyed it.

To this day I do not use calculators ... don't want to forget how to do math ...

I tell my nephews every day ... do these SIMPLE things and I can guarantee u will be a success in life cause no one does them anymore ...

- pay attention to detail ...
- THINK .. no one stops and thinks anymore ...

Do those two things and life will be much better ...

And why they don't even teach u to balance a check book or make a personal budget in 7th grade or above is beyond me ... makes no sense ... ZERO ..

There's a better way of dealing with microagressions than this. It's called being equally as petty. I've found what gets white people going is any mention of their lack of culture and heritage.

Thanks for the story arch. While it is a sad one, it just goes to show that violence and murder isn't isolated to a location nor should it be defined by race. I pray for that child.

Not sure this needs to fall on teacher's responsibility. Sure, it would help, without a doubt. But, parents need to do their share too. Education doesn't nor should it stop at 3:30pm or in July/August.

It seems some think/feel our schools should be responsible for every aspect of education, and parents should not feel the need to be involved.

You are so witty! I just love your IQ! I aspire to be more like you in every way because you have it all figured out.

You go around calling everybody snowflakes and stirring crap, yet you never seem to get banned. I went years without ever having an issue but since Christmas or there about I've been banned 3 times. It seems just linking to a video "off site" that has the word HE double hockey sticks is bannable now. No other words in it. Problem was I warned those that the word might offend, setting up the snowflakes to report my post. Then I made the mistake of saying that I've seen worse, which I have on any given day and the ref took exception to that and scolded me on top of the ban.

Seems to me like somebody that doesn't like me very much might be looking for reasons to report my posts. Almost like there is an effort to silence me... I wonder who my fit that description? Of course I'm not saying it's you 40 because in reality we enjoy the back and forth but this last ban made no sense to me at all. No bad words in my post, just that warning and one word in the video.

So Yes I mentioned the ban and am doing my best not to be provoked into posting anything bannable in a very provocative atmosphere. You can understand that right? Today threads started being locked and users are told they might be banned for name calling, like snowflake I guess, so be careful old friend because big brother is watching.

I hear that a lot these days and have come to the conclusion it is because we are getting older and know what works in this world and what doesn't. We need to realize we were young and stupid once so we must be patient while the youth of America catch up.

Social Media has lowered peoples communication skills to the point they sit at a table together and text each other.
