I don't understand the push for Sony to put BluRay on the PS3

If you look at the typical PS3 owner, they are teens and early 20's.

Take that group and figure how many even have an HDTV that their PS3 is hooked to, then also figure how many of those even use their PS3 to watch movies.

I don't think the possible BluRay users outweighs the loss of sales due to price.

Im am twenty years of age, and yes I have my Ps3 hooked up to a regular set, and strangely it's just fine. Of course when I get the money, I'll be getting an HD set, but until then I'm content.

And yes, I watch movies on it all the time, I guess it just varies from person to person, I don't know.

But it does help that Blockbuster is now going to be doing blu-ray also.

E3 07: 60GB PS3 $499, 80GB due in August
Sony confirms price drop to AP, says new $599 model bundled with MotorStorm coming next month.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Jul 8, 2007 7:16 pm PT

Today, Sony confirmed to the Associated Press what a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 10, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model.

The price drop announcement was accompanied by more unexpected news: The 80GB PS3, previously only available in South Korea, is also headed stateside. The larger-capacity system will go on sale in August for $599, and will have all the functionality of the 60GB model. To help stifle complaints that $100 might be a bit much to pay for 20GB more of hard disc space, Sony is bundling the game with the off-road racer MotorStorm, which currently retails for $59.99.

The price drop further indicates that, after a slow start, Sony is now aggressively trying to expand its customer base in the US. The move comes none too soon. According to the latest figures from industry-research firm the NPD Group, the PS3 only sold 82,000 units in the US in May, compared to the Xbox 360's 155,000 units and the Wii's 338,000 units. Ironically, the console's predecessor, the PlayStation 2, was the month's fourth-best-selling platform with 188,000 units, just behind the PlayStation Portable's 221,000 units.

Will the $100 price drop turn the PS3's fortunes around? "Even with a $100 drop, the PS3 is still the high-end console," Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian told GameSpot. "But price cuts typically generate incremental demand, and I don't think this situation will be any different. Bottom line, this may not be enough to kick-start PS3 sales into the mass market--but it's a good first step."

Now I really wish I waited for the 60g.........

They'll have to if they want to be competitive.

Still way overpriced, IMO.

I work at a daycamp, I'll mention this bit of news out there to the kids. Their responses should be interesting. It definitely was when I mentioned the PS3 earlier. Anywhere from 8 to 13, the kids ALL would say "I'm not getting a PS3, are you kidding me? It costs WAY too much."

In fact, the way they discuss it by their tone of voice, you'd swear it's UNcool to have a PS3.

Remember, the age here is elementary through middle school, but I can't imagine high schoolers or even college students being much different. Granted, there's more leeway since there's job opportunities out there, but we need to save our money for car insurance, gas and other stuff.

I don't see PS3 sales suddenly taking off now that it's at $500. I think $400 is the magic price for the reasonable high end consumer/people who can't wait any longer since that's where the 360's been at, while $300 is the mass market price.

I'll get it at $400 or after Christmas if I get a boatload of money, we'll see.

Then again, I just have this feeling that they'll cut the price again right after Christmas, although it'd be awesome if Sony was aggressive and cut it before the holiday season to induce a sales spike, but I just don't see that happening.

That's my point.
I bet less than 25% of PS3 owners are hooked to an HDTV. The advantages of BluRay will not be visible on a regular TV. Standard DVD's are already better resolution than a standard TV can supply.

So if adding the BluRay is adding $200 to the price, is it worth it? If the PS3 was $400, and they could sell a million more units because the price is cheaper thanks to no BluRay that most people won't be able to use to it's true performance. Is the gamble worth it?

Is the gamble worth it? Well so far they have overcome HD-DVD which was released first. So I'd say so far it's working. So far the average consumer thinks Bluray first when it comes to HD Media, and it's thanks to the PS3.

With that price of HDTVs dropping rapidly you will see more and more people buying them. I just got mine and the first thing I did is called my cable company to get and HD DVR cable box. They told me that they are on back order because the recent rise in HD sales. They receive units weekly but I'm so far down on the list they told me it would be 4 weeks. This is pretty much thanks to Vizio and Olevia. Both companies offer very inexpensive HD LCD's. 37" for $799. (Click on price)

Just wait until Christmas and you will see even more price drops on HD TV's. Ask any BestBuy or Circut City employee and they well tell you they sell more HD TV's than SDTV's. In 2-3 years time HD will be the Standard. And if things progress the way they have thus far Bluray will have a comfortable lead at the time over HD-DVD, all thanks to the PS3.

I don't think anyone can really argue with that.......but can the PS3 survive 2-3 years of the 360 and Wii crushing it in console sales? A system can go only so far with little customer support. I'm wondering if PS3 will be the best system, due to Bluray support, but won't be around because of its poor start.

We will see, I think the PS3 will start seeing better sales with a price drop.

In other news I'm really excited for E3 on Wednesday. With the price drop already confirmed I want to see these things:

MGS4 Confirmed Exclusive
FFXIII showing off the new White Engine
KillZone 2 Real time gameplay and not CG.
Warhawk Demo
Socom Confrontations Demo and beta annouced
Rumble controller's return
Home demo and beta announced
Haze: Exclusive or Timed Exclusive?

I Disagree with that statement, you ask the average person on the street about HD-DVD and BluRay and I bet more than 50% would say something like "Aren't they the same thing?"

Most people are just now realizing that they are different entities, and BluRay has a more marketable and recognizable name. Where as HD-DVD just sounds like a fancy name for a DVD.

Not really. That 360 Elite is going to be higher than that, and it doesn't have a couple things that the PS3 does. It's money well spent for me.

I'll throw something out here too. I like many PS2 owners have been waiting for a price drop. Now that it looks like it is happening I'll be trading in my PS2 and most of the games. That will get me at least $100 in store credit. Most likely more. So I'm pretty stoked to hear about the price drop. I know a lot of people like the xbox but I've been a playstation fan from way back. This is what I've been waiting for.

Not true.

Over the air broadcasts is normally 240i, Cable and satelite is 480i.

A standard definition TV can handle 480i or 480p without any problem. That is the resolution of most DVD's.

HDTV's go 720p, 1080i or 1080p. I can tell a difference between 480i and 1080i

lol, yeah there's a tad bit of difference.

FA- any suggestions on a specific HD to replace in my PS3? I'd like to get an upgrade now before I get too much saved on, otherwise, I may opt not to do it.

Actually, OTA is 480i, same with cable and satellite (this is all SD of course).

DVD's are 480i too, the progressive scan you see is the DVD player itself combining the images.

Blu-Ray/HD-DVD will be well worth it when the price justifies it. Cuz the difference itsn't even close.

1) Try to buy a name brand it will be better suited for the PS3 with ZERO chance of frying your system.

2) Needs to be 2.5" SATA Laptop HDD

3) 5000 rpm (7500 rpm will fry your PS3 no matter how fast the guys on Ebay are claiming your PS3 will run)

4) 8mb Cache is a must.

Shop around and see what is the best deal with that criteria and you will be happy. Just replace your HDD and the PS3 will automatically set it up for you.

I never said you couldn't I said you can't tell the difference of a BluRay DVD vs a standard DVD on a regular TV, the TV resolution will only got to 480, no matter what the DVD is trying to display.

DP17, I am getting FREE internet in a month!! Anchorage is going wi-fi. (can the PS3 do wi-fi??). If not I think I can get an adapter? (can I?) I'm pretty excited!! Funny thing when I went to the store to check on the price drop the saleperson really did a HARD sell on the xbox and not the PS3. I couldn't tell if she was an xbox loyalist or is she really knew what she was talking about. She did bring up good points such as the lack of games vs xbox, the 9 proc vs. 1 processor. Still I want a PS3!! It's friggin sony and they WILL get games. I kinda remember it taking a year or two for a lot of PS2 games to hit market.

Well, seeing as it would take most of the kids about a year or so to save up that much money, I wouldn't want one either.

But yes, I do have one. Hey, if you can afford it go for it, that's what I say.

I saved up for mine for a month or two, and I 'm happy with it. It's such a reward when you work hard, and then you finally get something, you know.

Yeah......I hear. Tempting....tempting. Only problem is, Madden is out in another month. And I guarantee I'll be stuck on Madden and won't play it after that. That's what's holding me back. I may rent it, though.

I guess they're supposed to be revamping the Madden system or something? at least that's what I've heard, they're concentrating on more what is used to be.

I will see the reviews before I buy it this time, because last year, it was pretty bad.

But hye, I'm sure it'll be great, if it's not then I'm going the 2k route.

I didn't buy it the game last year, either. And the year before, I was playing tons of SOCOM so I didn't get into quite as much as I used to, so I know I'll be rusty. But with the next-gen system and the word of it getting back to focusing on gameplay, I'll pick it up.

WTF man? I'd have to imagine this means the 80GB will fall to $500 once the 60 GB's are gone, in conjunction with the lowering cost of PS3 production. Still, it's a rotten move IMO.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/804/804902p1.html

E3 2007: Confirmed -- PS3 Price Drop Temporary
Once the 60GB model is sold out we will be returned to our regularly scheduled price tag.
by Daemon Hatfield
July 13, 2007 - Ever since Sony announced it was dropping the price of the 60GB model by $100 to $499 earlier this week, there has been rampant speculation as to whether or not it would be a permanent price cut or a temporary one until supply of the model runs out. Today GamesIndustry.biz received confirmation from David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, that the 60GB model will not be continued in Europe. But what about North America?

Senior Public Relations Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Patrick Seybold, has substantiated this news to IGN: the 60GB will not be continued in North America, either. In effect, this means the $100 price drop is only temporary.

"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Seybold said. "We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."

Seybold also shed some light on the company's plans for the older PSP model now that a redesign has been announced. Will it be phased out as well? Or receive its own price drop?

"The newly designed PSP will replace the original PSP design starting in September with the $169.99 PSP Core Pack and the $199.99 Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack."

WTF man? I'd have to imagine this means the 80GB will fall to $500 once the 60 GB's are gone, in conjunction with the lowering cost of PS3 production.

That's exactly whats going to happen. Just watch, the 80GB version is being packed with Motorstorm and an extra controller for $599. When the 60GB runs out they will sell the 80GB with NO game and only one controller for $499.

Still, it's a rotten move IMO.

Not really. They are trying to cut costs. Taking out the Emotion Engine chip for the 80GB version is a huge key. They are moving forward and only making the 80GB version, but if they came out and said when the 60GB version is out of stock we will drop the 80GB version to $499 then a lot of people will wait for the 80GB version. They want to sell all of the 60GB first.

But, I don't have inside information to Sony, this is just what I think they will do IMO. If they keep the 80GB at $599 even after the 60GB are gone then yes, its a stupid rotten move and it will be a serious blow to the future of the PS3. (That's why they're not going to do it.)

I think you've got the right idea. Sony knows from all the talk in the gaming industry that they need to drop prices. I think they addressed the game question pretty well at their E3 conference. LOTS of great ones to come. They seen how the PS3 doubled in sales the week they announced the price drop. Those are the numbers they need.

In the mean time, I'm enjoying my PS3, but am too anxious to get my hands on all these games coming out. I have a big list that I want to buy, and I typically don't buy a huge number of games. But there's just too many coming out that I can't pass up.

I'd rather them make a 60 GB version for $399.

$399 = Ammo gets a PS3.

Although $499 with a game an extra controller may be enough to get me in there.
