Salazar pitched 5 innings tonight and gave up 4 dingers. Nice work, Danny. Tampa up 4-1.

EE with a 2-run bomb. Man, this offense would look a helluva lot better if he was hitting.

Our starting rotation has a ton of holes right now and we give up the long ball like its candy at halloween. If it wasn't for our BP we'd be 8 games under .500. They got to move salazar and bauer out..i'd be calling up pitchers left and right to find something that worked

If we had anyone worth a damn down in the minors, they'd be here now.

I'd like to see the Indians pursue a trade for a young front-of-the-rotation starter. Some of the names I'd be willing to consider trading are Jason Kipnis, Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, Cody Allen, and/or any of our minor league prospects. Not all of those players, mind you, but any of those names could be considered available in a trade for a young F-O-R pitcher like Detroit's Michael Fullmer, Houston's Lance McCullers, or Tampa's Alex Cobb - someone like that. I'm wishing that instead of going all in on Encarnacion, we had put that time, energy, and $$ into pursuing Chris Sale when the White Sox made him available last winter. Pitching - even when you have enough, you always need more.

Must we go through this again?

Fine.

On May 31, 2016 the Tribe lost and was 26-24.

Then the weather got warm and so did the Tribe.

None of the guys you named gets you any of those pitchers. Not even close (or anyone similar to them).

The White Sox traded Sale because they got the #1 prospect in baseball in return.

I don't agree with that. I think a package that involved one or two your top prospects (Mejia, Zimmer, McKenzie - all Top 60 MLB prospects) and one of two of Kipnis, Allen, Salazar, Bauer would get someone's attention, and might be enough to swing a deal.

If a team is trading away a starter like you are describing, then they are most likely rebuilding. If a team is rebuilding they don't want Kipnis, Allen, or Bauer. They might want the prospects, but a small market team like Cleveland would probably not be wise to trade it's young assets for a starting pitcher.

I don't think a rebuilding team is going to trade a young FOR pitcher because they're still under control at a market-friendly salary. More likely, IMO, a team would consider that kind of trade if they felt their starting pitching depth is good enough without the young pitcher for them to contend, but they are missing a key component like a closer, or a LH bat, or a catcher. Salazar could (conceivably) be considered a replacement for the traded pitcher in their rotation, especially in a pitchers' park (one former player called Detroit's ballpark "Comerica National Park"). Trading Allen, Salazar, and Zimmer-or-Mejia would be a steep price for the Indians, but if it brought in a 3rd legit starter for them, I think they could go back to the WS and win it.

The names I mentioned - Fullmer, Cobb, McCullers were really just examples of what I'd like to see. Is it likely? Probably not. But we did get Andrew Miller for a bag of prospects; maybe lightning could strike again.

I agree with your rationale, you just don't see trades like that happen very often.

Salazar is very good, he has just had horrible luck. The BABIP gods have not been kind to him. His strikeouts and walks are right in line with where they were last year. He will regress to the mean and be fine.

j/c....

Nice win tonight and a quality start by Bauer.

Great to see Encarnacion hit a meaningful HR.

Kipnis and Ramirez had great over the shoulder catches.

It'd be nice to take this series.

Great.

Clevinger lasts only 7 and gives up 2 hits and 2 walks.

At that rate, if he started every game of the season, he’d surrender 324 hits and 324 walks (162 * 2).

Encarnacion has had a solid day so far.

Here's something I didn't know about Tyler Naquin. He's been hurt.

Has Tyler Naquin been forgotten by the Cleveland Indians? Hey, Hoynsie | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2017/05/hey_hoynsie_45.html#incart_river_index

Hey, Hoynsie; What's going on with Tyler Naquin? Is he still on the minor league disabled list at Class AAA Columbus? Are the Indians disenchanted with him? - Gary Coatoam, Sanford, Fla.

Hey, Gary: I keep getting peppered with questions about Naquin following the Indians promotions from Class AAA Columbus. Yes, he's still on the disabled list at Columbus with a back injury. He's making progress, but there is no timetable for his return to games.

There's no reason for the Indians to be disenchanted with Naquin. He helped them reach Game 7 of the World Series last year. Right now he's just injured.

Good win for the sweep against the team with the best record in the majors. I had the game on the radio, and in the top of the 8th Tom Hamilton said something that got my back up a bit. It was 8-3, Indians, and Kipnis was at the plate. The infield went into a defensive shift, with the SS behind 2nd base and the 3B playing in the SS's normal position. Tom said that if Kipnis were to lay down a bunt down the 3rd baseline he could basically walk to first for a single, BUT that that could be construed as "piling on" by the Astros and that it could lead to somebody getting drilled in the ribs at the plate. I'm thinking that's crazy - they had two more at bats and they have a very potent lineup in a hitters' ballpark. Then I started thinking how much I hate the "unwritten rules" of baseball, where there's certain things you just don't do because it "shows up" the opponent. I was thinking it again in the 9th when the Astros made it a 2 run game - the tying run was on deck when the game ended. In my mind, you keep trying to score until its over. That goes for any sport. Its their job to stop you, not yours.

Same thing happened a few days back. A team was up 5-0 in the 7th against the Marlins. The relief pitcher went 3-0 and the next pitch. the hitter swung. Mattingly, the Marlins manager, went nuts. You could see him going nuts, he went off about the "unwritten rules of baseball" after the game and I think they plunked someone the next day.

I get that Mattingly is having a rough year but a 5-run lead in the 7th isn't insurmountable. I'm swinging on 3-0.

Show no mercy. Unwritten rules, huh? Maybe unwritten "suggestions." Not trying to pile on is one thing, but after it is hopelessly and clearly out of reach. We need every win.

Ever since interleague play, I’ve hated playing Cincinnati.

Of course part of it is their offensive logo. A despicable caricature of a running baseball man.

The other part is the Tribe never seems to come home with the Ohio Cup.

No wait, that's football we’ve been losing every year. We’ve dominated them in baseball.

Never mind.

Take home the Cup Tribe!

Not me. Well, maybe the team.

Napoli is basically doing the same thing this year with Texas.

He already has 10 homers, but he’s batting .190 and striking out every third at bat.

Those at bats last world series where he could have won it were too painful to watch.

I could be wrong, but I suspect his homers were almost all off “second tier” pitchers.

I imagine he’s a real nice guy and a positive influence in the clubhouse. But that’s not enough. Your teammates also wanna see you win games.
