Just opinion and possibly a genuine ??? from Vers...you are not butting in on anything.
I thought (and I'm not an expert on his career) is originally he started at FS and soon went to SS and never was moved back.
Discipline is important with any D and at all positions.
I think its all about creating around the talents of our players so that it will be easier for them to be disciplined. Back to what we can see from training camp.
Hey due to the contract ending this season possibly we wish to keep him around for a back up/Dime situation at safety???
Right now all is speculative.

Nate Orchard is being moved to his pre-draft position of DE. He will get some competition from Cam Johnson for that 4th DE roster spot, but I think that he should win that battle and make the cut. Nassib has to be considered ahead of Orchard and Johnson. Yes I agree, he is our #3 DE.

Most likely him or Schobert.

Maybe it's just because I repressed November/December games of last year, but wasn't Tyrone Holmes much better than Johnson?

We cut Cam Johnson before the season started last year, he signed with the Cardinals (practice squad), and then we signed him back when we had a ton of injuries. I'd guess he is the first guy to be cut.

If I had to guess, I'd say neither makes the team.

Could be but remember last year we were in a 3-4 Cam was light in the butt fro 3-4 DE and was not the OLB type to play in 2 point. So what we did with him last season as a statement of his worth, might not apply. He will be at his more natural position this year of 4-3 DE but we look to have a good crew there and it definitely will be a Training camp Battle for sure!

When we are in a 4-3, which won't be a high percentage of the time, I think we will play Collins at Mike and have Kirksey and Alexander on the outside. Not sure which one will be the Will or the Sam, at this point in time. Probably Alexander at Will and Kirksey at Sam. Alexander is fast and plays downhill well, but isn't very strong.

I could also see us never play a true 43 but play a safety as will or even play a 52 instead of 43. It becomes the question would you rather have pryor/kindred on the field, alexander/schobert or ogunjobi/ nassibs? Personally I'd go 52 most of the time

Not to get in the middle of anything here, but IMHO, he's basically an SS who played FS a few time. So maybe he fits Williams scheme in that he can do both. The question in my mind is, does he have the discipline to follow his assignments. He has a tendency to overrun, or pick the wrong gaps. Discipline will be the key to his success, I believe. That on him, and on GW to help instill it. I think you have this bass-ackward. To get this thread back on track, I thought I read that he was a FS in school? I think EO is right, put him back at his natural position.

No, I think Cal is right. Pryor's skills speak to a SS and not a FS. I hope we don't ever put him at FS.

He's not an especially gifted SS either but he grades out better then Kindred or Campbell. It makes sense to have him compete at FS due to how thin that spot is but I can't see him walking in the door as thee FS.

You might be surprised at what a year of pro training can do (that goes with the rest of last years addition's). The 4 man front if they are discipline in their gap control, should in theory keep the MLB clean. I am less concerned with debating where our 3 best LBers end up, then putting the best 3 or 2 out there. Collins can play all 3 equally well, so I don't expect to see another playing out of position in our scheme. Naturally Alexander is the least experiance and still must prove that he belongs. It's a mystery to some, but Hue can not hide his like of a player and he always mentions Alexander in discussing that group and that was with Davis still on the team. I think that the team has high expectations for the young man. We have not had good fortune in drafting QB's, but we have had our fare share of UDFA that have surpassed expectations before. Here is hoping that we found another.

I would like him at the Will. The dude can cover, has good speed, and plays well downhill.

I'm not really sure. He's pretty fast and plays well down hill. He got into the backfield a lot, but I don't think he had a lot of sacks.

Getting back to the trade though.
We added a veteran SS, that will give Peppers time to learn the position without the pressure of a time constraint and we give a young guy like Alexander a chance to earn his keep and saved a little cap room as a bonus.
I see some fore thought in making this trade. Being proactive, rather then the pattern of being reactive in the past.

j/c Plutos article this week, divided into four parts: Pryor, Brock, OTAs & FO. ABOUT THE DAVIS DEAL 1. The moment the Browns traded linebacker DeMario Davis to the Jets for safety Calvin Pryor, I had the same question as many Browns fans: Who plays middle linebacker? Right now, the answer is probably Tank Carder. But put an asterisk next to that. 2. I'm hearing Gregg Williams plans to use a lot of "nickel" defenses, meaning five defensive backs and two linebackers. The defensive coordinator has two quick linebackers in Jamie Collins and Kirksey. He wants to let them loose to make plays. 3. A key will be finding enough good defensive backs. Pryor comes to the Browns much like Jamar Taylor did a year ago. Taylor was written off by Miami, despite being a second-round pick in 2013. The Browns helped him regain some confidence, and he became a very viable defensive back. In fact, the Browns signed Taylor to a three-year, $16 million extension -- $5 million guaranteed. 4. Pryor was a first-round pick by the Jets in 2014. He started 38 games in three seasons, including 15 in 2016. But he struggled so much, leading the Jets to draft a pair of safeties. Profootballfocus rated 90 safeties last season, and Pryor clocked in at a discouraging No. 74. 5. For what it's worth, the Browns had two safeties rated lower than Pryor: Derrick Kindred (81) and Ibraheim Campbell (85). Both were given chances to start a few games last season, and both had major problems. 6. The Browns highest-rated safety in 2016 was Ed Reynolds (46). His assignment was to stop all the deep passes being thrown over the secondary, and he did a decent job of that in his seven starts at the end of the season. He played very deep, but kept those receivers in front of him. 7. The Browns drafted Jabrill Peppers with plans of making him a strong safety. He split time at Michigan between linebacker and safety, it was nearly 50/50. The Browns consider safety to be wide open. 8. My guess is Williams will use a lot of four-man fronts, something I like. At linebacker, they have Kirksey and Collins as designated starters. I don't think they will move Kirksey to middle linebacker, but some NFL people believe he can play there. Profootballfocus ranked Kirksey No. 4 among all linebackers against the run. 9. Joe Schobert impressed some coaches early in 2016 and the rookie from Wisconsin even started four games. He fell out of favor, playing mostly on special teams. He is an outside linebacker, so perhaps he can help. 10. The Browns didn't say it, but Davis lacked the speed they wanted at linebacker. They thought Pryor is worth the gamble because the price was so low. Link

JC...All I know about Pryor is he can lay a lick...has coverage issues, and will wiff tackles...Not sure how much an upgrade if any he provides. But I guess it is what it is.

It's not ideal to have your highest rated safety be in the 40s league wide. That is something that must change
