For the ladies travelling alone, there's this town in Newfoundland, Canada.

#BestSummerEverContinues

I got blessed with my gal and her family. I got invited on a trip to NYC and we arrived this morning.

Just got out of my first broadway show and I loved every moment of it. We saw Bandstand which is a play based out of Cleveland. It tells the story of soldiers starting a Swing band upon return from WW2. Go see it if any of you are trekking out here soon.

Tomorrow we take a water cruise, and then we see the 9/11 memorial.

This feels surreal, and it's fun to look back. Some of you know how hard I've worked for moments like this, and its paying off.

Pick this guy up yesterday

Black Lab puppy. Bout 10 weeks old. Named him Jack, like the typical movie hero names.

Congrats! He'll be your, and your family's best friend. Labs are great dogs, especially with kids, but just people in general. Lots of energy though.

Oh, one other thing. Look in that pup's eyes. Realize that he is trusting you in every aspect. Look deep in his eyes and you'll see.

Black Labs are fabulous dogs! Super smart and friendly, but will still bark at strangers and protect the house.

I had a black lab x husky and she was an amazing dog.

Congrats!

Thanks, everyone.

When we got home, he immediately started playing with my daughters, which was awesome.

He follows me everywhere, however I think I need to take training courses cause he absolutely hates the leash. So I signed up for a six week course at pets mart just to get the basics down.

Almost all dogs fight the leash at first, bro. Buy a book or get one from the library. You can train your new friend w/out spending a lot of money.

And I can give you advice if you want. I have trained dogs. Hunting dogs that need a lot of discipline. A house dog is a lot easier to train.

Yeah, you want to get them trained, no doubt. I made a mistake with my lab, Mo. If you want to hear that, pm me.

He's a kid, and labs love people, and attention. He'll be all over you and your family. They CAN have a bit of protectionism in them. You can, at this age, foster that, or try to quell that.

And make sure anything in the house at "tail wagging" level is either not breakable, or something you don't care about.

Congrats. By all means get him trained and socialized with other people and other dogs. All of the imprinting is done very early in a dogs life and now is the easiest time to stop bad habits from forming. That's a beautiful dog.

Yea so far the only ones who don't like Jack is the cats.

The good news is that he isn't chewing on things important.

The bad news is that he goes out of his way to destroy the cats toys.

It'll take months, we brought our dog home (this is late 90's) Old English Sheep Dog mix from the humane society as a puppy and the cats were like HELL WITH THIS!

Then the dog got big, and the dog knew it. After some brief back & forth it was all warm & fuzzy.

Any pro tips on teaching a puppy how to use the bathroom outside?

No easy answer, bro.

The best is to keep the little pup w/you or another family member as much as possible. I used to sit w/my pups and every time I would get up, I would take them outside.

Dogs get routine. They do not get logic or reason. They need routine. Be diligent in setting up a routine and it will go easier.

1. every time you feed them
2. every time they take a long drink
3. every time they wake from a nap.

Repetition and consistency is key. We always set up the trips with the same phrase: "You go outside? Let's go outside." They will put it together in no time.

Cage training is also very helpful. Dogs won't 'go' where they eat/sleep so you can use that to your advantage. Folks think it's cruel to house your pup in a crate, but it's not so at all. The crate is their home, and gives them a sense of security. Equip it with some soft material for bedding, a few favorite toys, you're good to go.

We literally house-broke Bella in 2-3 days, but she's an exceptionally bright dog. For most ppl/dogs, it should take less than a week, if the fam is unerringly consistent.

It was a pain at first because there were accidents, but my walker hound picked it up pretty quick. We took him outside early and often. Brought him back inside as soon as he did his business. We also took him right outside as soon as he had an accident. Seemed to work for us after a week or two.

Clem gave some good advice. Crate training is good - my lab was trained in about a week. But, I don't know how it would work if people are home all day.

When your dog DOES go outside to pee, etc, praise it, a lot. And give him a treat. Each time.

My daughter has a chocolate lab. Best dog I've ever been around. She hung a bell around the doorknob and every hour or so walked him to it, grabbed his paw and tapped the bell then took him out. The dog now does it EVERY time he has to go out! Did I mention how much I like this dog?!

Just keep taking them outside after every little drink or food and in between.

We trained our two to ring a bell when they want to go out. We bought a couple sleigh bells and strung them on some leather, looped it around the handle of our back door and they hang down between the handle and floor. Training was kinda like when you train a cat to use the litter tray...we kept taking the dogs to the door, used their paw to ring the bell then opened the door and put them out. They quickly caught on that ringing the bell meant the door opened and eventually started ringing the bell themselves to let us know they needed to go outside. They are now 4 years old and even still use it to communicate. We may be in the living room watching tv and we will hear the bell ring, or, lets say on that rare occasion they may have an upset tummy in the middle of the night because of something they ate...we have been woken up to the bell at 3am. Much better than to wake up to a crap show all over the floor! It was significantly easier than we thought and with regular persistence in your training it really works!

EDIT: congrats by the way on your new addition! I can't imagine our family without dogs.

Clem gave you the best advice on house training anyone could have. Crate training. And the other things is using the word "outside". Don't combine that with other words. It's much easier for them to grasp a one word command.

It lessens the confusion and helps speed up the process. Another good piece of advice I saw you were given that is very good. Praise the dog when he does his business outside. The one thing a dog wants to do is please its master. Letting him know that he pleased you will do wonders.

Labs are pretty easy to train, the house breaking thing won't be that difficult.. what will be difficult is the chewing on things... but in the end, they are magnificent dogs. thumbsup

Not sure if Aussie's are similar to labs in regards to training, but positive reinforcement helps the best to teach. Negative reinforcement doesn't work so well.

When they go outside and 'go'... treat.
When they start going inside, run them outside and once they finish... treat.

If they start chewing on something, distract and give them something else to chew on.

Bell training is good. Takes a bit.

We did it with our current dog, AFTER crate training for a couple of weeks.

My only issue with that is, now he associates the bell with "going out". So, sometimes he'll just ring the bell so he can go outside.
