This stinks because he is from Cleveland and was very excited to join the team. I can't say I'm surprised though. He was an undrafted player that we claimed off waivers, those guys don't usually stick.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
It does suck, because of the fact he was from Cleveland and playing for the team he deeply loved growing up. Hopefully there is a way to keep him somehow on the practice squad or whatnot.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
lol couldn't we either do this a week ago or wait a few days? so weird to do this today.
Anyways, the FS position continues to be a problem IMO

I got a feeling we will be ok at Safety. Don't know who will step up for the FS spot - McCourty or Pryor? Reynolds? An unknown yes, but doesn't mean we won't improve at the position and with depth. jmho
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
As Williams said, he doesn't have the power to cut players, but on D he is the guy who decides who will play. Sounds to me like he told the powers that be they might as well open a roster spot and give someone else a look, because Powell was never going to play for him.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
Same. I'm sad that Tyvis got cut, but he's just too much of a tweener at safety. Doesn't hit hard enough to play SS and doesn't cover/move well enough to be a FS. His run support game also leaves a lot to be desired as well. I was hoping he could get the experience here to grow in those areas, but it looks like he couldn't beat out the rest of them. Sucks to see. He's a great person. I hope he goes to the Bills next. I need to see him with Cardale again. They're fun goofy like Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, you just want to see people like that succeed.
He was my pick for the UDFA to make the team. He had 14 INT in 38 games played in college. Given the philosophies that he has espoused thus far, I suspect that Williams wants a ball hawk at FS. He has good size, at 6'2", 211#, and has good speed as well. I know there were a lot of DBs drafted, but I am still surprised that he wasn't one of them.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
He is definitely a ballhawk type, and has good size and quickness.
Did I mention 4 INT in his 3 years in college?

I'm confused. You talk all the time about not watching football, yet you know so much about players that I haven't even watched.
First, you guys tell us how good Powell will be and now it's Nacua.
I don't know squat about the guy, but this is the first article I saw about him:
Quote:
Why Undrafted?: Kai Nacua
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell
Three years ago, we started a series of articles on why certain prospects went undrafted. In that series, I reach out to sources with NFL teams to find out why their organizations passed on drafting a given player, and/or, what were the reasons for other teams to pass on that prospect. We got a lot of positive reader feedback about the series, so we decided to expand in the genre to investigate why some prospects slid in the draft. A year later, we started the Why Slide? series, and this year, it is back. Feel free to email me requests for "Why the Slide?" and "Why Undrafted?" at draftcampbell@gmail.com. I can't promise to get to all of them, but I will do my best and definitely respond.
Over the past few seasons, one of the biggest ballhawks in college football was BYU's Kai Nacua. He had six interceptions in each of the past two seasons. At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Nacua has good NFL size, so it was curious as to why he wasn't a more highly regarded prospect and fell undrafted.
Sources said the reason that Nacua went undrafted was because he lacks NFL speed. Evaluators thought that he would have problems running with pro receivers. That was the concern that caused Nacua to not get selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.
After going undrafted, Nacua signed with the Cleveland Browns, and that was a great landing spot for him as the Browns are wide open at the safety position. First-rounder Jabrill Peppers will be penciled in as a starter at strong safety, but Peppers has coverage issues and produced only one interception in college, and that came off a tipped pass. Peppers will take one roster spot, so Nacua will have to compete with Derrick Kindred, Ed Reynolds, Tyvis Powell and Ibraheim Campbell. There will be three roster spots for that group of five to occupy, so two players will probably get cut. Nacua also could be signed to the practice squad.
Nacua may have more ball skills than the rest of his competition, but his speed concerns could be an issue to prevent the deep ball. He will have to star on special teams to earn a backup role as well. Still, Nacua picked a good landing spot because there is a wide-open competition in Cleveland, and the Browns are open to late-rounders or undrafted players earning a role. It wouldn't surprise me if Nacua overcomes the speed concerns and carves out an NFL career for himself.
I don't know squat about the guy, but this is the first article I saw about him:
Just looking at his pro-day numbers, i'm seeing 4.5 sec 40 yard dash........ That seems pretty quick to him, and that is the explanation that that article says about the guy.
But i've never seen him play, so maybe he's slower in the game than on his pro-day.
I've never seen Powell neither though. Or at least, I never noticed him. I'm not a big OSU fan, so him getting cut doesn't affect me much more than any other player on the team getting cut.............. I'd just assume that Gregg Williams doesn't think he's better than the guys we have.
But the fact is, the best FS's we've had that I can think of have all been undrafted. Tashaun Gipson was undrafted. So was Mike Adams. So was the one year guy, Brian Russell.
So, just because someone's undrafted, hardly means they can't contribute. If we can get that kind of play out of whoever gets to be free safety, we'll be doing a lot better than last year.
Personally, I'm hoping McCourty manages to play the position and play it well. I liked a lot of things about Kindred last year, but he's going to have to improve his instincts before he plays FS. Reynolds just didn't look that athletic or talented to me from what I watched......... Kindred at least looked firey and athletic. He hustled, just always seemed to be late to wherever he was going (yet he'd be headed there full speed, lol)
Oh, I believe you watched him. You are a football junkie.
I guess I was just saying that it seems that there are posters who are always building up guys they have never watched. I used to get excited, but usually, those guys end up sucking eggs.
I'm not ripping the guy. I don't ever remember watching him play. I did watch BYU several times, but I don't remember him. That's not a good or bad thing.
What do you make of the claim that NFL people are saying he isn't fast enough?
I think people confuse me trying to keep things real w/me bad-mouthing a player.
I'll try again. I am NOT bad-mouthing him. I don't remember watching him play. He could be great for all I know. I'm just saying that I wonder how people who admit to not watching games know so much about obscure players that I haven't even studied..........and I do watch a ton of games.

Oh, I think you got the wrong impression. I wasn't trying to contradict you or say that you were bad mouthing or anything like that.
I was just making a point that the article from Walter's Football was criticizing his speed, yet he ran 4.5 in the 40.
And then I said the best FS's we've had were all undrafted.
But yeah, I never was trying to defend the guy or anything like that. Was just more talking about your article and whoever this Charlie Campbell Cat is.
But yeah, I know nothing about the guy either. I watch a fair amount of College Football, but don't get the chance to watch as much anymore. And I agree that there's probably people on here who most definitely write opinions on players they have never seen more than highlight reels of (and I'm not pointing anyone out because I don't remember who posted what about this Nacua guy).
Heck, players I've seen and been excited about have sucked too. Ibraheim Campbell being the prime example. He was a good one at Northwestern, and I thought he was gonna be take the starting safety job last year and run with it. Instead, he seemed to just dissapear
Hmmmmmm.......I just reread the article. I took it that they asked NFL people why Nacua didn't get drafted. They used the words "sources" and "evaluators," so maybe they weren't real NFL guys. I don't know.
What I do know is that there is probably a reason he went undrafted after putting up such big numbers and having such good size. Right?

I'd assume so. Like I was saying, maybe he just isn't that fast in the games. He could make good plays or something, but shows up late?
I guess we'll have a better idea on how these kinds of guys look as they get the chance to play in training camp and preseason.
I just hope that someone steps up and mans that role as FS.
Which brings about my next point, I also am not that excited about all that I hear about people speculating about Pryor and Peppers being on the field at the same time with another safety out there as well. I'm really hoping that Peppers plays SS and not WLB or something. If Pryor wants to play, I hope it's him winning the competition for the other safety position.
I'd prefer a more normal 4-2-5 Nickel, leaving three corners on the field. In a short yardage situation, why not just put in another linemen, and take out the nickel? Someone like Nassib or Orchard or something
EDIT: You can even introduce that Polish Perogie or Brantley or Big Larry or Des Bryant (basically a combo of three DTs)
EDIT EDIT: You know, Tank Carder looked pretty good in preseason to me last year, lol. They can throw him in there on the 2nd and 3's and such. I just hope that Gregg Williams is flexible and works on getting our best players out there that make sense to paly
I'm wondering if we are going to play a lot of Cover 2? I watched the Rams last year and they played that defense quite a bit. They would get burned in the seams.
