Have any store scam stories?

I just got back from a Stop & Shop store - a major regional grocery store chain in New England.

In produce I see “Cherries .99/lb”. Hey, I love cherries. So I grabbed a small bag.

Turns out they were “Golden Cherries” not regular cherries - $6.99/lb.

So now I have some very expensive cherries. I’d say about ~ .50/cherry. Golden cherries. They weren't kindin'.

I think I’ll make a cherry brooch.

It's hard to find a good cherry these days unless you want to be a perv and stalk middle schools.

Store scams are everywhere.
But it's usually more indirect.
The problem is getting involved in any of their programs. Or taking any of their "offers."

bait and switch is unlawful in Ohio.

They're actually called Rainier Cherries and mainly from Washington State. You can google em. Outstanding when at their best. The $6.99lb for Rainiers is about right. Organic Rainiers can run $9.99lb to $12.99lb and more.

Been in the grocery business/mostly the produce side of it goin on 44yrs. Rest assured I've never seen and/or heard of baiting/switching. Never.

We'll get a lot of "but the sign said" and 99.9% of the time the customer sees the .99lb sign for regular red bing, etc cherries and in they're mind they were AND ARE .99lb. Cashiers will come over and say "the customer said they were", etc and again, 99.9% wrong. "N'yet, $6.99lb, there's the sign".

With todays violence, etc spilling over into cherry displays looking for "the best looking bag" etc signs get knocked onto the floor, end up underneath the product, etc.

The other 0.1% could be a multitude of factors/reasons.
Rainiers just came in and whoever built the display brought the just delivered Rainiers out and forget to bring the sign. Rainiers are an in and out perishable item and wouldn't or shouldn't be a backstocked item.

A customer hid/threw out the sign to try and fool the 16yo cashier, etc, etc, etc.

They were heavy on Rainiers and wanted to bang-em-out to "get something" for them but were either in the process of changing the price in the system or just plain forgot.

The majority of the time customers see just 1 sign, the $.99lb sign, pick up a bag and go.

Rest assured a company as large as Stop & Shop ain't baitin and switchin cherries. Never heard the term in the business in 43 & 2/12ths years.

If it ever happens again just take em back. They know that if they don't take em back they just lost a customer. If you get any hassle, just ask to speak to store Mgmt. Guaranteed, they refund you $.

I've seen turkey carcasses returned after T-giving with the bones picked clean rofl

They'll take em back.

Thanks TTT.

I called and talked to one of the Produce staff at Stop & Shop. (maybe the manager?)

He was very understanding.

I told him I couldn't make it back until next Tuesday at the earliest. (so the Rainier Cherries are dessert.)

He said no problem. And took down my name and told me to stop in. He'd take care of me.

(he couldn't believe it when I told him I was rockyhilldawg and the store is The Rocky Hill Stop & Shop)

Isn't that amazing?

Hey, you know what, they're very good cherries.

Yep. A bag of cherries vs a dissatisfied customer ain't remotely worth it to them.

Btw, please keep the returned turkey carcass thing on the QT.
If that gets out 60 million picked clean turkey carcasses will be returned the day after this thanksgiving cause "it tasted funny". Now we know as GM's, Store mgmt, dept mgrs, etc that, "it certainly couldn't have been the cook", now could it? saywhat saywhat saywhat

Btw, that holds true 100% of the time with anyone your complaining to who has monthly house payments, electric bills, car payments, kids in college, etc, etc.

Whatever you need Sir, Miss, etc. Sorry bout dat. thumbsup

I had some Rainer cherries in Seattle a couple of weeks ago...

I think they were also in that price range.

Gotta say they were wonderful.

Rainer cherries are more expensive because they are simply better tasting cherries.

Pink Lady or Ambrosia apples cost more than Red Delicious because they are better apples. Same with Rainer cherries.

Yep.

How capitalism works.

Supply and demand.

It's a great system for distributing limited goods to unlimited demands.

I got lucky with me Washington State Rainer cherries. This time.

From here out it's back to Bings like the rest of us common folk.

Still plenty good.

And only .99/lb.

It's also an acres thing YT.

On a trip to a grower in Wenachee Washington we were on a hillside/mountainside and the grower grew 6-7 varieties. We were standing in his red delicious orchard and I asked, "how many red delicious trees do you have. His reply, "at last count, between 210 and 212 thousand. He rattled off the other numbers of the other varieties and golden delicious were a distant 2nd at roughly 180 thou. The others were much less at somewhere between 80 and 120 thou each.

When I started in the biz in 1973 we carried 3 varieties of apples. Red and golden delicious and a pre-packaged 8 or 10 count Macintosh. Now??? Oy vey I say!!!

Same thing with organic of all types of fruits n veggies. When org apples first came on the scene they were 4 times the price of conventional. With more acres of org the price gap has dramatically closed.

Imo, if i was younger and could afford it, with the price diff narrowing to what it is between the 2 i'd def go organic. Going to org now after all the pesticides and fertiilizers we've pumped into ourselves? Nah. Imo folks our ages "Use By Date" is already etched in stone. brownie

I never heard of these cherries before. But I am not a big fruit eater.

But now I'm curious, so I will have to try them.

That's about what I got, about a pound. ($7)

It was about 20 cherries. Which is a lot. They're big meaty cherries.

I suspect their season is short - although I'm sure TTT knows for sure.

This is what 1 pound looks like:
