Hockey arenas are more camera friendly, but you can take a DSLR into the Q. The lens can't extend more than 6in if I remember correctly. I was able to get some shots like this one of Mozgov throwing the hammer down (24-70 f2.8 lens):

The Camellia bush outside my house. It blooms every winter when everything else is dead. It is about 15 feet tall and has stunning blooms. Camellias have to be my favorite plant.

Anyone of you smart people have a canon rebel xti?

I let my nephew's fiance use mine a couple months ago.

I tried using it for the first time since then, last night.

2 issues:
1. The auto focus doesn't work when looking through the lens. The actual pictures are focused, but the lens doesn't focus when you're looking through it.

I've checked on line, about the only thing I could find was "clean the sensors". But, the pictures are focused. I don't get it. Pictures are fine.

2. The display is showing (after I take a picture), the picture, but only half size..the other half of the display shows what I can only describe as a "heart monitor" looking thing. Like, a graph.

It sounds like she may have set some custom settings. If worst comes to worst, you can reset the camera to factory defaults.

1) Sounds like the lens itself is set to manual focus (M). There should be a switch on the lens. If not, and the autofocus points don't light in the idiot (green square) mode, it's probably a camera issue.

2) The display is showing the pic and the histogram. You can change it back so the pic fills the screen. On your camera I think there's an "info" button that let's you cycle through the different views.

Both lenses are set to af - auto focus.

What gets me is, looking through the viewfinder, it's blurry as can be, but the pictures are fine.

I'll have to do some checking on how to get rid of the histogram. What the heck does a histogram mean to someone like me?

Ok, I thought the lens wasn't focusing. If your viewfinder is blurry check the diopter adjustment...there should be a small knob next to the eyepiece that allows you to adjust the viewing screen to your eyesight. Also, those viewfinder lenses can get pretty smudged/dirty/oily. Slide the rubber eye cup up and off and give the little lens a cleaning. If this doesn't do anything, it sounds like your focus screen is out of alignment or damaged and will need a trip to the camera shop. The focus screen is different than the sensor. It's a little square screen deep in the camera that sits between the mirror and the sensor and displays the focus points...it has to be in perfect alignment to get a clear viewfinder view.

Can you ask the girl you lent the camera to what adjustments she made or played around with or if she had any issues while using it?

The histogram shows you the exposure of the pic...to over simplify things, you want all of the bumps in the center of the graph...too much to the left is underexposure, too much to the right is overexposure.

Been extremely busy as of late. Grad school, teaching responsibilities, conferences in Anchorage, and everything else pushed photography to the side. I ended up getting stuck in our hub town due to inclement weather on the way back to the village, and it allowed for some great photography opportunities.

-This picture captures the essence of bush Alaska travel. You want calm wind, high ceilings, and a clear day. However, my village had the opposite conditions 100 miles away.

Nice pics...really like the plane in the sun. Snow really is a white balance challenge.

I get to teach photography again this semester, and this week we're discussing how to deal with white balance.

I find white balance to end up as a personal taste. Sometimes I prefer a cooler white, and other times I prefer a warmer white.

The sun sets later now up here; it drifted below the horizon around 7:30, and it casts a beautiful purple hue over the mountains and snow. The bay rests completely frozen, and multitudes of ice fishers sit out in the evenings during tide change to try and grab a decent catch.

I think post production photography is also personal taste. How I edit will be different than how you edit etc.

BUT, you can make a good photo great with your post production editing. You cannot make a bad photo good. Making that contact sheet, looking at what you have, ignoring the bad and choosing the good to spend time editing is important. If I take 100 photos I will be happy if I have 5 really decent photos to work with.

Which island? I've spent time on Kauai and Maui. Love both islands but favor Kauai. I like it's laid back, less touristy feel. My buddy has a place on Maui though so it makes a vacation there less expensive.

Polynesian Cultural Center exists as one of the most engaging cultural experiences you can participate in! I highly recommend going. This place holds the title for the best thing from the trip to Oahu.

Waimanaloa Bay features some of the best coastline I EVER walked on. The sand, the water, and the views blew me away. We spent Memorial Day at this beach.

A couple of pretty cool tricks in there!

I've used similar tricks in my photography. Picking a flower and holding it in the foreground of a picture of mountains or whatnot. Sometimes to turn a good photo into a great one it requires a helping hand.

I've been blessed again with the opportunity to see and hear one of these rare creatures. It's one of only 2000 male Kirtland's warblers, which only breed in carefully managed jack pine stands in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. This guy popped up briefly for a challenging backlit shot. It was a chilly, windy morning and the birds were lying low.

I've been in PA a bit over a week now.

These photos come from a little trip with my girlfriends' family. They have family friends who own a cabin in north central PA.

The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Sweet.

Mechan 9, our giant fallen robot, is at the Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury, Michigan. 80,000 people will attend this event. About 40,000 last weekend and another 40,000 this coming weekend. We set him in the Forest on Monday of last week. The first weekend was a great success. So much so that we got top honors in a Billboard Magazine article.
